“Superb, relaxing stay, in beautiful quaint cottage.”
Reviewed 15 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We arrived around 7.30-8pm on a Friday evening, not the most convenient time for hosts to be welcoming guests, but Stephen and Elaine made it seem a pleasure in showing us round, getting us settled as well as leaving us, not just the basics, but homemade treats to make our arrival even more welcoming :)
I had a few questions as to locations of places as we were out early the next morning, Stephen very kindly provided an explanation of the area and drew us a detailed map. Also Elaine and Stephen are happy to help out with any needs you have (We needed super glue and a taxi at 8pm saturday evening!), and also accommodated our, at times, nosey, hyperactive dog!
The cottage itself is spotless, with front and rear gardens both lovely to relax in. It is situated In an unspoilt area of the Lakes but what seemed like a short drive from anywhere, of which we wished we had more time to take and do some more exploring, including it being a stones throw from the quiet beach town of Allonby.
We will most certainly be going back again soon!
Thank you!
x

“A wonderful magic little cottage - a pleasure to return to each evening.”
Reviewed 7 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We spent 6 nights at Stable Cottage. From the offset we were made to feel very welcome by Elaine and Stephen. Then when we entered the cottage we could feel the lovely atmosphere, the cottage is very tastefully furnished and equipped with everything anyone would need. If that was not enough we found lovely homemade treats in the kitchen - our evening taken care of even down to the wine! The cottage is in a great location, very quiet and peaceful, and not too much of a drive away from the many beauty spots the Lakes have to offer. We visited, Buttermere, Grasmere, Ambleside, Loweswater, Keswick, Rydal sometimes stopping along the way for a short country walk. Each night we drove down to the beach and witnessed some wonderful sunsets. There are a couple of pubs approximately 20 minutes walk away down the country lanes. We walked to the Bistro one evening and enjoyed really good meal with excellent service. The thing we liked the least was having to return home! But having said that we returned home with "our batteries fully re-charged" and ready to face the world. Thank you again to Elaine and Stephen - we hope to return in the not too distant future. x

We went for a 4 night break and found this cottage to be average. The break did not start well when the neighbours shouted at us for parking outside in the spaces across the road so we could unload our car. We were then guided to a piece of grass and dirt under some trees to park which was ok .
The road was noisy at times with big tractors blasting by at speed, in fact , we live on an estate and we have nowhere near as much traffic.
We had been left a lovely welcome pack with homemade items which were very tasty and appreciated.
The cottage is small but adequate although the stairs are so steep and small we both walked backwards downstairs as we were scared of falling.
We were freezing and the cottage felt damp and on our first night and the heaters provided were not enough so we had to ask if we could have the central heating put on as there are no controls in the cottage for us to do it ourselves. There is no dryer but you can ask the owners to dry things for you in their house.
We could not get a phone signal and when we had an emergency at home, my husband had to walk away up the road to get any kind of signal. Internet access is severely limited and very slow.
The nearby leisure pool is £20 per hour to hire - a bit expensive for two people just to have a swim!
We did not even realise that we could see the sea from the cottage and when we visited the beach, which was well populated, we could not stay as it was overrun with disgusting flies. We have travelled all around the world and have honestly never seen anything like it.
The Bar 'n' Bistro in Gilcrux was well worth a visit and the food is amazing. The chef gave me her recipe for sweet potato chips which I certainly will be trying at home.
On our third night there was no water and after it came back on it was pure white and fizzy so we had to go out and buy bottled water.
The owners were welcoming and did all they could to make our stay pleasant but I would be more careful when booking a place like this in the future

Dear Pamela
We thank you for leaving your review for Stable Cottage and are disappointed to note that it did not entirely meet your expectations. We will try and deal with the points you have raised.

In the email sent to you giving directions to the cottage we politely ask that you park in the lay by just past the cottage. The reason for this is that we are sensitive to the needs of our very good neighbours who live in the cottages opposite and who customarily park their cars in front of their cottages. You obviously chose to ignore our request and were indeed approached by one of the neighbours. We have since spoken with our neighbours, who we are sure would not have 'shouted' at you, and it appears that when the parking lay by was pointed out to you your response was somewhat insensitive.

Our lane is normally very quiet. We do say in our write up for the cottage on Holiday Lettings that we have almost as many tractors as cars on the lane.Your visit was at the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August. This is traditionally second cut silaging time in the country and for that reason there may have been slightly more tractors about than usual. I'm not sure that we can be held responsible for the speed at which the tractors travel.Maybe it's because we are used to it but we have never found the level of traffic noise from the lane objectionable. We have never received any complaints from our guests before or after your stay and indeed the comments on Tripadvisor and in our visitors book in the cottage would indicate the reverse in that guests seem to relish the peace and quiet here.
Your point with regard to the steepness of the stairs would seem to indicate that you had not adequately read our description before booking. We say quite clearly in our write up that as the stairs are quite steep the cottage is not suitable for children or people with mobility difficulties.
The cottage is small but again we would refer you to our description where the room sizes are quite clearly set out.
We further take note of your point regarding the heating and the fact that you felt cold on the first night. We are sorry that you were not comfortable and we of course responded to your complaint once you drew it to our attention the following day. There are central heating radiators in the bedroom, the lounge and kitchen and a heated towel rail in the shower room. In addition there is a 2 Kw fire in the lounge and a 1 Kw heater in the bedroom. The bed is provided with a 13.5 tog quilt and an additional throw over quilt with additional blankets and pillows in the wardrobe. At this time of year we set the default temperature for the central heating at 17.5 degrees. Following your complaint we increased this to 25 degrees.

You are correct to state that there is no tumble dryer in the cottage but we do not advertise that there is one. There is a retractable washing line on the rear patio and the information folder in the cottage clearly states that we are more than happy to dry washing for guests in our tumble dryer.

The mobile phone signal in this area can be variable depending on which network one is using. Our mobiles are with Talk Talk and Vodaphone and the signal although not brilliant is servicebale. We have never previously received any complaints with regard to the phone signal. When guests arrive at the cottage we always say to them that if there are any problems or we can help in any way just to call at the house. We were unaware of your emergency and had we known you were struggling to get a signal we would have happily let you use our land line. The internet speed here is not fast and we advise guests of this, It is perfectly adequate for surfing the net and taking off emails but indeed may not be as superfast as you are used to in the city. This is just one of the joys of being in the country where our pace of life in general is much slower.

We are sorry that you thought that the leisure pool was expensive. We have had many guests who have used it and found the experience of having such a large heated pool with stunning surroundings,a sauna and hot tub all to themselves a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We often go with our family. You will appreciate that we do not set the tariff for the pool and we always point out the alternative leisure facilities in Cockermouth.

We are not sure where you went to the beach and your experience does not seem to have been a good one. We suggest to guests who want to go to a beach that they visit the beach at Allonby, This beach never gets busy although at the Bank Holiday weekend there may have been more people than normal and a few kite surfers. We go to walk on this beach on average about twice a week and have never ever come across the problem with flies that you mention. We have never had any comments from guests other than that they have been impressed with the beach and particularly the lovely sunsets over the Solway Firth.

The reason that you had no water on the third night was due to a burst water main in Gilcrux (something totally out of our control). The water went off mid evening but was back on again by 4.00.a.m. From past experience after an interruption in the water supply the water can take on a somewhat 'milky' appearance but it is perfectly safe to use and drink. (United Utilities would not send water down the main that was not safe)We always keep a stock of bottled water and had you come to the house we would have gladly supplied you with some bottled water in addition to that already left in the cottage.

We are happy that you enjoyed your meal at the Bar'n Bistro. This is our local pub/restaurant that is frequented by many of our guests and gets consistently complimentary comments.

In conclusion we trust that we have addressed the points you have raised. We would have preferred to have discussed these matters face to face with you but since you chose to leave without even saying goodbye we did not get the opportunity to do this.

“Cosy retreat with everything you need”
Reviewed 18 August 2014 for a stay in June 2014

I'd packed the kitchen sink only to find there wasn't just a sink there already but there was wine in the fridge, local cheese and more to welcome us.

This cottage is very well equipped so you can cook like you were home - if you want to of course!

Perfectly placed to make trips into the Lake District, lovely local towns and walks on sandy beaches.

Wonderful welcome and a wonderful break.

Thanks very much.

“Absolutely fantastic an amazing place to stay.”
Reviewed 16 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

I was there for a week with my partner, I have never ever been to a cottage that I have felt so welcome as I felt on my stay. Steve and Elaine put in a great effort to make sure that we were comfortable and welcome. We were given directions to the cottage and when we arrived we were greeted with a welcome hamper of home made cakes and scones and a lovely bottle of wine. The cottage was well equipped and furnished to a high standard. We loved it. I am considering going back for another break. I had a good relaxing time and I felt that I recharged my batteries and it was what I needed.

Steve was so helpful - very friendly welcome and we arrived to homemade goodies and other treats which was a really lovely touch and much appreciated!
Cottage was very clean and lovely! Bed was really comfy. We only stayed 2 nights but had everything we could possibly need at the cottage.
Information book was really useful as well.
Very different to usual Lake District locations - very quiet - locals very friendly - great for walking!
We found the cottage really easy to find!
Overall - can't find anything negative to say about the cottage or area! We had a perfect weekend and would be happy to return!
