A group of 6 walkers booked a private room and stayed 2 nights.

We have never stayed in a quieter hostel in terms of noise - it was bliss. Even with a family staying next door. We found the hostel very clean with comfy beds and extremely friendly staff. We stayed in an 8 man room on the second floor with good access to ablution facilities. There was only one mains socket in the room, which I can imagine could get quite competitive.

We chose to self cater and found that there wasn't much space in the fridge or at breakfast as the self catering area is a little small for peak seasons, but the kitchen was well equipped.

The hostel is in a great location to walk out of the back door and straight out on the hills. The drying room is well positioned also for when you come back in - and lets face it, it's the Lake District so we were always going to get wet!

Overall, this hostel ticked all of our boxes and we will use it again when we are next in the area.

Whilst the beds were comfortable and the place was clean I was disappointed that 2 cold water taps in the bathrooms on our level were not working and in the one that was there was no plug for the sink, I mentioned this to the manager on our arrival who said that he hoped to get them fixed sooner or later! Well they were not fixed whilst we were there! The continental breakfast was poor. I noticed in the kitchen a large poster that stated that this breakfast should include cold meats which it did not, the manager told me that cold meats do not keep well so were not included, I suggested that the poster in the kitchen should be taken down if they were off for good - to which he just shrugged!
Perhaps I am being to fussy - after all it is only a hostel! On the other hand the others we have stayed in recently were better,

Stayed 3 nights in the hostel. We found clean well maintained facilities.( unlike the review). Good restaurant, we bought breakfasts which were excellent. Members kitchen perhaps not as well kitted out as other YHA' s we have stayed in. Bar available in the evenings. No complimentary tea/coffee here as charge £1.50 a pot. ( so bring your teabags). However a good location, just a 10 mins walk either by road of footpath at the back of the hostel into Coniston. Good selections of pubs in the village. Would definitely stay here again. Staff very helpful, especially the cook! We used the hostel as a base to go to Silecroft to ride on the beach. amazing experience - see Murthwaite Green Riding stables.

Room Tip: If you want Wi-Fi in your room you need to be next to reception. Room 9 is the only downstairs room...

Slightly confused by the review below mine! I have just spent a wonderful two days at this splendid hostel, beautifully clean, the friendliest staff, delicious food (freshly cooked) and chocolate flapjacks at reception too! There are obviously some areas which could do with a refurb but I understand these are in the pipeline. Coniston is a stones throw away, there are stunning views from The Old Man which can be accessed out at the rear of Holly How Hostel. I can't wait to return and will bring family next time. Highly recommended.

After getting totally lost on a mammoth walk and descending the mountain behind Holly How via a perilous and completely incorrect route, we arrived here sweaty and extremely relieved to find this little gem! We were welcomed by the friendly staff who were very sympathetic... The room was great, with a sink, comfy bed and even a wardrobe (luxury for YHA)! We made use of the huge lounge and hostels board games before having dinner on the veranda which was very fairly priced and very yummy. The hostel was very busy but this didn't detract from the atmosphere, this is a lovely place to stay on a budget. Well worth it!

Location is bit away from main city, but near to nature. Can avail the tent facility. However we used the hostel rooms as didnt plan for tent camping. Very good accommodation option considering the price band. Clean and neat hostel. Food quality was also good.

This is massive YHA in the coniston. You can also get an option for tent and barbecue. The management is very friendly and supportive. Just self service kitchen is having all old and very less utensils. Apart front his everything else is grate. Very big dinning place and massive reading place.

I recommend this YHA and other benefits is this hostel is in the centre of various natural attractions and lake. Another beautiful thing is adventurers roads to this place.

Thanks for your review - yes you can book camping online this year through the YHA website. Most campers take our meals - the reviews here show they are popular. Our self catering kitchen is quite basic, but why not treat yourself and eat with us next time!
We are looking forward to the summer sun when you can sit outside on the terrace with a beer, eat some great food and watch the sun go down over Grizedale forest in the distance! Then it's either a couple of steps back to your tent or upstairs to bed in our new bunks!
