This was a busy pub, but the food was worth the wait. Great atmosphere and good selection of beer/ale/cider on tap

Thank Gemma R

This bar has to be one of Coniston's best kept secrets. Tucked up on the hill with great views of the surrounding hills from the terrace outside, the bar is full of old oak beams and exposed Lakeland slate walls. They offer the best range of real ales you can hope to find, many of them from local microbreweries. I recommend Hawkshead bitter as the perfect session beer and Loweswater Gold for something special. The bar meals are now very well priced at £9.95. I ordered fish chips and mushy peas and although the peas were slightly on the cold side, the fish was substantial and the chips done to perfection. I'll be back, though it's worth checking the time for last food orders, if it's still 8.30pm, this can make it tricky if you arrive late after a long drive.

We've not been here for years and were very disappointed. Beer WAS nicely kept I'm told but the coffee described as a latte had not seen any milk and the steak pie had good meat but inedible pastry and poor chips. We won't go beyond a drink again. The conservatory area leaks too!!

The Sun has been a family favourite for many years of visits to Coniston. The combination of good food, Bluebird bitter and the poignancy of its association with Donald Campbell made it an essential part of our holidays. Our visit this week was very disappointing. The steak pie and fish and chips were virtually uneatable and the fact that we were given conflicting advice by different members of staff on the rules for a family dog were a source of confusion and annoyance. We did not feel welcome.

Has it changed hands? It used to be a gem. We sincerely hope it can be one again.

"Fresh food - best in the village. Up the hill and well worth the walk!"

Well the sign at the bottom of the road to the Sun Hotel (see photo) succeeded in persuading us! Up the hill we trudged anticipating the best food and local beers.

We sat outside in the sunshine. That was enjoyable. The views are lovely.

The service and food were pretty lacklustre, though; certainly not the best in the village.

Once bitten, twice shy. We won't be hurrying back.
