“Great cottage, ideally located by Coniston Water.”
Reviewed 30 August 2017 for a stay in August 2017

Brown Howe Cottage was lovely - nicely furnished, plenty of space (and loos!) for 8 adult sized people and the bonus of a garage to keep bikes, wetsuits and walking boots. I'd suggest only taking bikes if you're very fit - there are lots of hills! There is a patio and garden behind the cottage as well as the shared courtyard area at the front. Coniston Water is a short (though muddy when we were there) walk down a track from the cottage, and we were able to launch our kayaks from the shore there.
The cottage was ideally located for exploring the area by car but there were also some great walks straight from the front door, including one with a tarn suitable for swimming in. In terms of touristing, we particularly liked Brantwood (home of John Ruskin), the Lakeland Motor Museum and the Ruskin Museum in Coniston. Chesters in Skelwith Bridge does a lovely brunch, and the cafe at Brantwood has nice food and good views.
So, big thumbs up - we'd stay here again.
(It is worth noting that the cottage has wifi but the only mobile phone signal is Vodafone.)

“Cozy place with nice views ...”
Reviewed 3 August 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Brown Howe cottage is a cozy place with a lot of activities to do like a short walk through the private wood to catch a breath taking view of Coniston Lake, enjoying coffee & breakfast with window view of the birds, squirrel and hamster raiding the bird feeder or the bedroom window ledge where one can read their favourite books.

The Brown Howe is situated in a serene location within Lake District, away from the hassle of the crowd. It is serene but not secluded as it has neighbours next door and quite a few properties within the same area.

It is recommended that one drive to get to this place. Do note that the entrance to Brown Howe is "hidden" so do look out for the mirror as landmark for you to turn in.

Dennis was very responsive and helpful as he provided detailed description of how to get there as well as things to do in Lake District.

We enjoyed our stay there.

“Splendid stay”
Reviewed 2 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Booked and stayed here with 7 people and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Cottage was spacious enough for all, catered for a thegroup with large lounge, well equipped kitchen and separate dining room.

Situated off the main road between Torver and Coniston the location is fairly secluded but this makes for a very peaceful and relaxing setting.

“Homely and comfortable stay in a great location”

An excellent stay at Brown Howe. This is a homely and comfortable cottage with a great kitchen and open plan living room. There's plenty of equipment to prepare meals and we were also provided with a starter pack of logs for the fireplace in the lounge. We have two young children and this was catered for as well including a stair gate.

The location is very quiet and often we came back to find sheep on the track approaching the cottage! We spotted a woodpecker along with many other birds from the kitchen window and found there were a lot of family friendly walks close by - our favourite was Tarn Hows. The accommodation has a couple of walks on your doorstep and, for us, was close to the main towns and attractions we wanted to visit in the Lake District.

The owner, Dennis, replied quickly to any emails and called during our stay to check all was well. The neighbour was also very friendly and helpful.

“Fantastic location, cottage was just as described!”
Reviewed 3 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

The cottage was just as described, with a spacious open-plan living room and well equipped kitchen, 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, plus an extra toilet downstairs. It has lots of character, with comfy sofas and fireplace in the living area (also a cupboard full of board games and books for a rainy day). We loved the location - very quiet and with private access to Coniston Water. Unfortunately, it's not possible to walk along the lake from the cottage and the road is quite dangerous for walkers.

The cottage is set in private woodland some 200m from the main road to Coniston and is well away from highway traffic. Like many rural roads there are no footpaths. Crossing the road there is immediate access to the Torver fells and Blawith Common and Beacon Fell via a walkers footpath. Near the cottage and 400m along the main road towards Torver there is a very quiet fellside single track road (smooth tarmac) that gently leads up the fell about 1 mile. It is a public road but a dead end and leads to a single farm and is therefore very quiet and ideal for push chair/ buggy type walks, walkers/runners and general access to the fells. There is a lay-by on the main road next to the turn-off and Brown Howe public car park is close-by.
