Owner description: Stunning Tarn Hows offers an accessible circular (1¾ miles) walk through beautiful countryside with majestic mountain views. A great place to walk and picnic, or to begin your wider Lake District countryside adventure. There are also rare Belted Galloway cattle and sturdy Herdwick sheep grazing by the tarn. There is a mobility scooter available for use for those who are less able to get around the Tarn.

An gentle walk to Tarn Hows through the countryside. Just follow the signs or drive there. The place is man made but it has been done very well.

Good smooth drained paths around the perimeter of the tarn. Pay & Display car park (free to NT members) which is a lot bigger than it was 30 years ago when I was last there. Good clean toilet facilities and information about the creation of Tarn Hows. I recommend going clockwise round the tarn if you are less nimble, like me, as there are a couple of short steepish inclines but nothing too bad. Trampers (off-road mobility scooters) can be pre-booked for free if you cannot walk far - see http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/tarn-hows/visitor-information/ and have a look at the video of one going around the trail - saw a couple using them whilst we walked around. The wildlife is not too put off by visitors and there dogs and there were warblers and meadow pipits singing at the far end and the ubiquitous Canada geese and mallard. Red squirrels are seen here apparently but I expect it has to be very quiet then and early morning or late afternoon. I did not see any here but did at Dodd's Wood Osprey Viewing Point.

The walk up Tom Gills waterfall was well worth the fantastic lake views. Nice icecream van too just what was needed after a hot walk.

Beautiful quiet place that's good for an afternoon walk/exploring for yourself and your dog.
The route around the Tarn is easily to follow and not many steep ascents/descents- pushchairs and wheelchairs might be able to get around without too much trouble.

The only thing we felt let down by was the parking- we did go during a school holiday and near the middle of the day but had to wait nearly 10 minutes for a space - and after driving along a small road we didn't want to turn around! So the parking wasn't great but was only about 2 minutes walking from the Tarn.

A great place for a picnic, a bimble around, a nature walk or just to let your dog play in the water.

Easily accessible for all abilities. This tarn has easy walks and good parking. Lots of wildlife and interesting things to look at around lake. Orienteering too.
