This is an atmosperic pub as soon as you walk through the door the place seems to hits you with its unique character it has a low black beamed ceiling and open fireplace. The food is exellent I've had many meals there. The beers are brewed on site and are second to none. There are two beer garden areas to the front and side. The only problem with the place is that at 11O'clock they call time .

There was no hot water since 9 pm, neither any beforehand notice about it. There were four telephone numbers, we weren't told which one to call. We only noticed two of them, and called both, but no one answered. The sheet was dirty with blood stain and hairs. Omelette was with egg shells. When we tried to complain in the next morning, the waiter said he couldn't be there 24 hours. (Then who should?) And a waitress said "sorry" in a very intimidating way, suggesting we were lying about the hot water, which made us even more uncomfortable. Yes, we could have talked to the reception in person the previous night, as she suggested, but only if we hadn't been climbing the hills in the snow for 8 hours and already in pajamas in the hope of having a hot shower. Anyway, hot water and clean sheets are not luxuries, they're the basics required from a hotel room, and they failed to provide both, as well as a sincere apology.

What a strange review and full of lies, yes they said no hot water but when i checked with other guests all 26 of them they had plenty of hot water,as for telephone numbers there are 2 emergency numbers covered 24 hours a day dont know where they got 4 from and they were ringing the hotel so yes no answer .
Now we come to the omolette which they did not have here ,we do omolettes on request but they did not request one so another lie and that photograph was not taken here i can assure you of that.
Now blood on sheets no mention of that whatsoever ,obviously gone off and 4 weeks later decided to make up a complaint .

We spent 8 nights at the pub over Easter. Our room [4] was clean and comfortable with an amazing shower! The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was wonderful pub grub but with some very well cooked and tasty "specials". The pub's own Bluebird ale was awesome [husband's comment], I loved the Stowford Press cider. The bar had a real buzz and I loved the real dog friendliness of the place. Lovely and highly recommended for a walking break in stunning country. A real family atmosphere.

We had an Easter weekend stay here, and stayed in room 1 in the annex, a comfortably sized room on the ground floor, for a couple and our black lab. I was a bit nervous that one of our windows overlooked the car park, but it was absolutely fine. The room facilities are in good order, very clean and tea and coffee provided. A very comfortable bed! Would recommend they put a boot rack in the hall to save their lovely carpets :-)

It was particularly cold on our visit, the the room was plenty warm enough, however they kindly provided a booster heater - just in case !

It is in the perfect location, very central to everything in Coniston, all the other bars and eateries close by and a short walk to buses and then you can walk directly from here to explore the fells and Lake with ease.

The staff, particularly Les and the lady that served our (very nice but very big (2 egg, 2 bacon, 2 saussies, fried bread and unlimited toast)) breakfast, were all very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. If you fancy alternative brekkie I would recommend very highly the little cafe across the way, I think it was called Couryard garden!?!?!

In the main bar/restaurant it gets very busy at certains times of the day, but there is a nice quiet residents area if you want to escape the noise, but frankly it was fine! Food was probably the best we tasted in comparison to the rest of central Coniston and they offer a great selection of beers all from the Coniston brewery out the back! Would highly recommend trying the 'tasters' served in 3 small glasses so you can have a little try of each of your choice! They accept dogs at anytime!

It was all very reasonably priced too, especially since some other hotels and bars in the Lakes can be a bit on the pricey side. Would recommend!

We're just back from a stay at The Black Bull hotel in the lovely Cumbrian village of Coniston where we had the pleasure of sleeping in the most comfortable bed ever. Our room was one of four in the quiet courtyard next to the beck (and the brewery). From one of the windows in the eaves our view was the snow covered Old Man when we opened the curtains in the morning while, from the other, we could check out the village coming to life. Bliss. I also loved the little tea pot which meant I could make a proper cup of tea - why don't all hotels still do this?

We opted for the (huge) hearty cooked breakfast (which was so big we needed to go and lie down again) and which was served by one of the unfailingly friendly and professional staff in the main hotel building (a 16th century coaching inn complete with fireplaces, horse brasses and big deep window seats).

The bar serves all the beers from the adjacent world famous Coniston Brewing Company microbrewery, the certificates of all the awards they've won are displayed on the walls and mantelpieces. You can buy small glasses of 3 beers served on a 'beer bat' if you're not sure which one to get first. Bluebird is a good start (it won the Olympic gold of beer awards - CAMRA's supreme champion beer - in 1998, as did No.9 Barleywine in 2012 although you won't need a lot of that - it's a strong one).

Impossible to recommend this place highly enough. Go - you won't be disappointed.
