Located right in the centre of the village, this is a busy pub. We (son and I) stayed for two nights in room 1 which is a twin that has a window overlooking the outside seating area at the front and another window at the rear that overlooks the river. In our room (our friends had another couple of rooms as well) the shower (no bath) had just been refurbished and looked great. Other rooms are quite different. In another room, our friends had one only a bath, no shower.

We had pre-booked two evening meals here, which was a good idea as it gets really busy from 6pm onwards as lots of families were in (Easter hols). The food was excellent which, considering the amount of people eating, is a credit to the kitchen staff.

There’s a good range of ten, or so, beers.

Inside it’s not the prettiest of traditional pubs, but fine if you’re on a walking weekend with your mates. We had no trouble parking in the car park at the back.

The staff were all very friendly and accommodating.

Dogs get complimentary sausages for breakfast!

Room Tip: When you book, ask if it's got a bath, shower, both. Actually, just ask what the room's like...

We have been going to Coniston for many years and always go to the Black Bull for something to eat, to stay or just for a drink. The staff are very friendly and the service is excellent. There is a specials board and a selection of traditional pub meals available all day every day. They also have an excellent selection of beers brewed on the premises including the famous Bluebird Bitter. Pets are also made very welcome both to stay over and in the bar.

Room Tip: Didn't stay this time so haven't commented on the rooms or sleep quality. Have found them ve...

Had two nights in Coniston, spending two evenings in the Black Bull. What a great pub, fantastic choice of real ales from the Bluebird brewery behind the pub, an extensive menu, my wife had the smoked beef burger, I had the haddock, both meals were delicious.

A lovely wood burner in an 18th century beautiful fireplace, photos of Donald Campbell, plenty of room for customers and their dogs, and a very warm welcome. What more do you need? A wonderful place to eat, drink and relax after trailing up Coniston Old Man in the pouring rain!

We stayed in Coniston 2 nights, and ate at the Black Bull both nights, as it was so close to our B&B. The food was very good, home made pies, chilli etc - you need to go in and read the specials board, as the menu outside is just standard fayre. The pub is also a micro brewery, so has plenty of choice, we attempted as many as we could in the 2 nights, think we did 7 or 8...... Didn't manage a pud as we were too full.

Great place to stay with your dog, they are very dog friendly, nice food, quiet and very clean, no shower though but a nice bath which is nice after a long mountain trek. Would stay again recommended. Relaxing and the dog gets a sausage for breakfast also, which is a nice touch, they have a nice restaurant attached too although I ate in the bar as dogs are not allowed in the restaurant but everywhere else.

The Bull's fish chips and peas used to be legendary. Huge basket of chips (more than you could eat) and plenty of mushy peas. Alas no longer! They've gone poncy. Chips are now served in a small metal cup and the peas come in a tiny ceramic fish (you get about a spoonful) and all for £11.50! I asked for a few more peas and they couldn't do enough for me. The waiter arrived with extra chips and tartare sauce too! I hesitate to recommend the place though as not everyone will feel comfortable at having to ask for bigger portions.

We were staying in Coniston and called in for a drink and meal. The menu wasn't huge but we had a starter and main course and couldn't fault the food and portions were generous.Would certainly go there again.
