“Independent Hostel”

This place was absolutely stunning! A real bargain considering you pay hostel prices and get top hotel service. The rooms were spotless, homely and immensely comfortable. The family who run it were absolutely lovely and very helpful. I would stay here again before any other accommodation in Grasmere, including five star hotels. Just a ten minute walk from the village and spectacular scenery from the window. I was quite speechless.

My colleague and I exclusively hired the hostel for 2 nights in March in order to bring a group of 12 6th form students for a focused revision break. Everything about the hostel was excellent. We ordered a Tesco online delivery to arrive at our expected arrival time and Dave had very kindly unpacked our shopping for us on arrival. The rooms were brilliant, all with bunkbeds and their own bathrooms. The attention to detail was fantastic - the owners really have thought of everything, and the hostel was clean and spacious. Our students were all on a rota to cook and clean up and we ate there both nights of our stay. The kitchen facilities were great - everything there that we needed and lots of room to seat everyone. We used both the dining room and living room for study sessions although I know that there is a separate conference room if we'd needed it. The living area had a TV and DVD player and lots of books / board games that we made good use of! Our students loved the free WIFI (a must for them!) and the hostel was just a short walk into Grasmere so great location. We would certainly recommend the hostel for other groups, families, couples and those on business and we're looking forward to arranging our next stay!

This is a new hostel, with lots of attention to detail. The rooms are excellent with en suite facilities. There is a large drying room, laundry, sauna (!), common room and kitchen. The owners take great care to introduce the facilities (and the small number of rules). Everything was clean and appropriate to a hostel.

Room Tip: Try for the ground floor to avoid lugging stuff up the stairs!

This is a great hostel and has everything you need, comfy beds in decent sized rooms with en-suite, cosy lounge, a large drying room and a well equiiped kitchen with large fridges and oven/toasters that work. Its clean, fesh and in a great location.
Stayed 3 times as part of a group, each time we ate in 1 night and had a 2nd night at the Travellers Rest a few minutes walk away.

This was our first experience of using a hostel and we were so impressed. The hostel is very well designed and perfect for families. We shared a room for 5 people – the bunks were comfortable and we had our own toilet and shower – this probably the most powerful I have ever been in! Plentiful hot water powered from their own newly-installed woodchip-fired biomass boiler!
The hosts were helpful and everyone was very friendly. We met seasoned Lake District walkers who were ready to share their knowledge. The kitchen was very well equipped and we were able to cook in. We also strolled down to the Travellers Rest Pub a couple of for pleasant meals. Extra facilities – a sauna, drying room... very well kitted out for weary walkers.
We had a wonderful Easter break. Really hope we can go back soon!

We only spent one night at the hostel, but enjoyed all the facilities: Having a own bathroom, a large and comfy common room, a big kitchen (tea and coffee were provided) and, most of all, a lot of information about walks in the area, some starting directly from the hostel. We got a lot of friendly advice from the host for walks, and he also recommended the Traveller's Rest for a less expensive dinner then you get in Grasmere. We would always consider returning!

Tip: If you arrive by bus, let the bus driver know you want to get off at Traveller's Rest, not Grasmere centre.

We've just returned from the hostel having booked it in its entirety for a large group. The hostel is one of the best we stay in and has everything you'll ever need - comfy beds, really well equipped kitchen, which is split in two so plenty of space for everyone, lots of toilet/shower facilities, exceptionally friendly and helpful hosts and even a sauna. What more do you need after a long day in the hills? Second stay for us and already booking for 2015.
