“Beer garden closed - open it then!”

Popped in on a warm, sunny February day after a nice walk. Poor range of beer - some were off and it was standard, nothing special. The "Walkers Bar" is a bit fancy, not really what you'd expect. But the oddest thing was that we wanted to sit outside and the beer garden was closed. Open it up then! It's not difficult!

Popped in for lunch on our way back from Keswick. Friendly chap running the bar, and seeming to do everything else too! So quite a wait to be served. Thought the ploughmans was overpriced at £12 for three chunks of bread, four sticks of celery, a slice of Stilton and half a bought pork pie. The fish platter had four slices of bread, two slices of smoked salmon (they had run out of mackerel) and a portion of prawns on four lettuce leaves. We had to ask for butter. A 175ml of white wine cost over £5.50. Ouch! Lovely location and hard working staff but there are many other lovely places close by that are better value.

Stopped here for lunch. Surroundings OK, service average, food really tasty, but far too expensive and too little. My husband had sausage and mash, I had fish and chips. Both portions were what most places serve as child's portions and each cost between £13 and £14.

What a rip off.

Although 6 of us only called in for a drink on a rainy Lake District day, we were not made to feel at home when we arrived, charged a lot for drinks, and offered no help by watching staff when struggling through a stiff double door in a wheelchair.
Glass of the cheapest white wine £8.50 !
The staff by the Reception (which had a sign quoting "the help available to disabled people who need assistance") leaned on the desk and watched as we struggled to get the exit door open and push the wheelchair through.

A group of 10 of us decided to have lunch here. Most of the bar snacks were OK but 2 of us had the savoury scone option. The scone was unbelievably small -about 1/2 inch across. The serving of shrimp butter was just about acceptable but there was nothing to put it on. When we asked for another scone, we were told it would be £3 extra. When we complained about the size of the portion we were told that it was as prescribed by head office. The staff were apologetic and embarrassed but it was obviously out of their control to remedy the portion size. I would have taken a picture but the zoom on my camera would not have been able to capture the miniature portion. Very poor for an top end chain.
