Owner description: William Wordsworth is Britain's best-loved poet. His life was a series of adventures and his early experiences made him into a rebel. Orphaned as a child, he went to University, travelled across Europe during the French Revolution, fell in love with an older French woman and then returned to turn English literature on its head with his radical ideas and poems in language that anyone could understand. He moved to Dove Cottage in 1799 and stayed for nine years, writing some of the most famous poetry in the English language, inspired by the landscape and the people he met. Visitors can take guided tours of Dove Cottage, wander in the gardens he designed and planted with his sister and discover his incredible life story in the museum next door (included in admission). Special exhibitions change regularly and family activities are integrated into the experience, with family friendly events during the school holidays.

“Worthy of Wordsworth”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

Such a pleasure learning about an English poet at his former home and the very interesting museum set in a quaint little village. The house tour was done very well although the volunteer had trouble answering some questions. The museum is well presented with displays that are easy to understand.

“Getting to know Wordsworth”
Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

A good visit, supports by an interesting, funny guide who brought us around the house. An interesting look at the earlier life of a poet. The house was filled with interesting things and brought alive by the guide.

The museum was a bit hit and miss though and the real interest is the house. If you are short on time - I'd skip it all together.

“Beautiful house and garden”

We visited on a lovely summers day and absolutely loved the house and garden. The guide was excellent and really made us understand what it would have been like living there during those times.

“Tasteful museum in beautiful setting”
Reviewed 27 July 2014 via mobile

Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Trust Museum are well worth visiting. Unless you are familiar with Wordsworth's life I suggest looking around the museum first before joining a tour of the cottage. The tour focuses on Wordsworth during the time he lived he cottage, whereas the museum covers his entire life. Our guide was informative and entertaining, and was able to address all our questions.
Pay and Display parking costs £1.00 for up to 3 hours.

“Check one from the bucket list”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Always wanted to see this and it didn't disappoint! The guided tour was so wonderful and offered so much information about William Wordsworth. The cottage was very charming, as I imagined, and the gardens were beautiful. I enjoyed the museum and gift shop as well.
