Having stayed at the Red Lion in Grasmere many times in the past, my husband and I thought we'd try the Wordsworth for a change. As much as we like the Red Lion, I have to say that the Wordsworth was even nicer, and the winter break deal is excellent (including 4 course meal on first night and cream tea the next day).

The standard rooms weren't available so we stayed in a 'Mountain and Garden view' room which was really lovely, and the views were stunning. Bathroom was finished to a high standard and was a good size.

The 4 course meal was excellent and delicious. The range of breakfast items was very good and food very good. The conservatory and lounges are lovely and comfortable.

My only criticism is that the spa facilities were a little disappointing, compared with the Red Lion anyway. The pool is nice, but the changing room and the room in which the swimming pool is are really chilly! We had hoped to sit in that area for a bit and read post-swim (there's nice chairs in there), but it was too cold. The jacuzzi barely works (although is a welcome, toasty temperature) and you can't get to the sauna from the pool area, you have to go back out into the hotel corridor to get to it, which we found rather inconvenient and odd. The sauna itself is very good, however.

If they could just improve the spa facilities area, I would give this hotel 11 out of 10; it really is a fabulous place to stay!

Thank you for your review, we've taken on board your spa comments and have fitted a new pump on our whirlpool and have turned up the radiators in the changing rooms! We can't move the sauna as we are not a new hotel but a lovely old property. I hope you do come again.

We popped up to the Wordsworth hotel a couple of weeks ago. Due to unforseen circumstances we were unable to stay for as long as we had wanted. We normally stay at the Waterhead in Ambleside but as i had read that the Wordsworth had been refurbished, we decided to make the change from the norm. I had had tea before at the wordsworth when it was in different hands. The staff are very helpful and friendly. As we couldn't stay the whole time we had booked for, we were only charged for the day we stayed.
The location of the hotel is superb in that it is in the heart of Grasmere which is probably the nicest village in the lakes. Although the hotel has had a refurbishment, i am not sure i noticed it. I couldn't tell the difference in terms of the appearance of the hotel to what i had seen a few years ago. Maybe we got one of the rooms that hadn't been redecorated either.
I loved the roaring fire in the entrance as we had gone the week after the snow fall and arctic conditions. For us the hotel was very inviting but still as traditional as it was before. I had thought that the refurbishment would have bought it slightly more upto date than it has.

All in all a nice hotel with friendly staff

We booked in to a small hotel down the road from the wordsworth but having found that less than satisfactory desided to look a little further a field.
We managed to book a 'last minute' 2 night stay and over the period of our stay struggled to find anything to complain about!
The room was wonderfully presented as you would expect (albeit with less than the best of views) and we had booked the hotel restaurant for dinner that evening.
The food and patriculary the service at the restaurant were simply exceptional! try the Chocholate dish dessert for a truly heavely experience.
The next morning we walked down to breakfast and were treated to an excellent buffet spread followed by the most delicious cooked breakfast. We returned to our room to find the room had been cleaned and the bed made! Great service all round.
The Gym and Spa are modest but have all the facilities you might want.
If we had any complaint it would be that we were having a rare winter heat wave during our stay and our room did not have a temperature control valve so it was a bit hot.

We had an excellent room, very clean and with good views. Very good and attentive service throughout. Main restaurant provides a more formal menu and atmosphere - lots of choice but the menu is static apart from daily specials, so those on a limited diet may run out of options. There is also the bistro which is less formal but still good.

Had a really pleasant stay a few weeks back now but I would just like to comment on how helpul Steve in the bar was. We sat there talking infront of the woodburning fire with my partner and he gave us lots of great ideas on things to do in the area.

Really great stay at The Wordsworth and breakfast was superb!

Booked a 2 night break including dinner on first night, cream tea on either day & breakfast on both,. Room was very clean, warm & comfortable with a king size bed, even though it was only a standard room. Staff were extremely helpful & friendly. The meal in the Signature restaurant was excellent. The pool & spa were a little disappointing as the jacuzzi diddn't seem to work correctly, but it was nice to have the pool as the weather was dreadful, it rained for 24 hours non stop.Location of hotel was great for exploring Grasmere & surrounding area, plenty to do without getting in the car. We would highly recommend the hotel for a break in the lakes & hope to return.

we stayed for a 3 night break in February and on our first night had dinner in the Dove bistro. The food was average to say the least, i had the gammon and my girlfriend had the lamb shank. The gammon was like a bacon rasher and the lamb was little better, veg all dryed up .
Complained to the reception as the waiting staff were rushed off their feet, and spoke to the manager. He said i have just eaten there and the food was fine and then ignored me so that was that.
The rest of the Hotel was lovely and the staff were very accomodating, rooms were very nice .Shame about the manager.!
Breakfasts were very nice with a good choice and good service from hard working staff.
!

Room Tip: great hotel shame about the manager location is fantastic .When in Grasmere take a hike to Easdale t...
