“Eight visits and still excellent”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

We have stayed at many hotels including the Hillthwaite near Windermere.
Here the rooms were slightly better but food and service were nothing like as good as the Wordsworth. (We waited over an hour for afternoon tea!) The staff at the Wordsworth make it run like a well oiled machine. Food here is fantastic and staff friendly and helpful. Changing room for the pool is a little small and the lift rather old fashioned but these are very minor compaints. Over the years we have seen the hotel evolving. Everything cannot be done at once. Some of the reviews are a reflection of the writer rather than the hotel. We have booked another visit in December when Grasmere is magical.

My girlfriend and I spent days researching potential hotels for a 2 night break. We decided on the W hotel due to other good comments on location, food, staff and room quality. We have just got home so ideal time to review considering all key aspects.

Location
Cannot be faulted. Grassmere is a tiny village littered by hotels, coffee shops and other tourist traps and the W hotel is located centrally. Beautiful village a short drive from Ambleside and Windermere. First class!

Food
Breakfasts were great. We both had a small nibble on the fruits and yoghurt before choosing from the main menu on both days. The full English was fantastic and came with a modern twist and plate preparation. Toast, tea and coffee was plentiful. On day 2 we tried the salmon and eggs and the missus had boiled eggs with soldiers - again scrummy. I asked the waitress for more toast and this came quickly and with a smile.

On the 2nd night we had dinner in the signature restaurant. Beautiful lighting and we'll laid out tables. The bar canapés got the taste buds flowing and we were soon whisked into the restaurant - an ideal place for a special occasion. The food is all served with a funky twist, portion sizes were fair and we were both full afterwords. Presentation and taste were great and the mascarpone cheesecake was best cheesecake I have ever had....delicious.

Overall the food was fantastic. Again first class.

Staff
Restaurant staff at breakfast and dinner were polite, attentive and could not have done more for us. They worked their socks off. We also loved the twist in the evening when the tuxedo and smarter dark clothing came out....again making the signature restaurant feel special.

Reception staff were good too. Head receptionist Kim handled our 1 complaint impeccably. Bar waiter Eduardo was also efficient when we went for drinks.

Special recognition must also go to Ally the scot who worked the restaurant. Such a personal touch goes a long way and helped make our time in the restaurant feel special. Keep it up ally.

In sum, the staff were great.

Room quality
Jees...where to begin. This is how this hotel almost grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory.

First things first - b&b cost us 109 per night for both of us, so it ain't cheap. Having been polite when booking we were upgraded (apparently) to a classic double room. Oh dear - on entry the room was foisty and smelt of damp. But we were excited and did not make a fuss. Room number was 24.

However, despite opened windows the room continued to smell badly and we agreed to make a complaint on day 2. On top of smell - some lights did not work, the headboard was stained, furniture visually scratched and bathroom furniture not level meaning aftershave could easily fall and drop from a height. Overall a bit of a horror story.

Kim the head receptionist and duty manager came up with us when we pointed the issues out. She too seemed surprised and was straight onto reception where we were upgraded to an executive room which was much better.... Thankfully this came at no extra cost. Room upgraded to 27.

Personally I think the room quality was a real let down and this would probably stop us visiting again. Either that or we would need convincing we would not see the same issues again.

Other stuff
Pool was ok for some light exercise and I did use the gym one morning before breakfast....again ok for a brisk treadmill run, but you would probably struggle to do much in there. The sauna was also good and I used it after a quick dip.

Overall
This place has many great assets notably food, staff and location. However, rooms and some of associated decor needs a real think. Had the room been better before the complaint / upgrade this hotel would have defo been at least 1 star better.

On a serious note we wish the staff all the best for the future as they are a great bunch. I do however hope whoever holds the purse strings considers some of the room quality issues.

Room Tip: Pay for a better room if you can afford it. Avoid being over the kitchen too as this contributed to...

Very nice afternoon tea last week - my daughter and I took my mum and her friend (for their 80th birthdays) - good deal at 2 for £25 - well worth it and staff very helpful and pleasant - have recommended to a few people since and will be back :)

Grasmere has to be one of the loveliest places to stay in the Lakes and The Wordsworth Hotel is at its centre. From its door you can visit Dove Cottage and take a number of walks, long or short. I found the hotel very comfortable and welcoming and our room well appointed and cosy. Our room was at the back and over looked the car park, but also the hills behind Grasmere Water, which was charming to wake up to. We ate in the Dove Bistro rather than the Signature restaurant and enjoyed the food, the breakfast was substantial with delicious eggs, surely made with cream - only on holiday! The pool is fairly small but long enough to loosen up tired legs. There are plenty of staff who were all very helpful and friendly.

The hotel is a prime position in a beautiful village, it's an old building which has been extended several times making for long rambling corridors, odd sized rooms, many staircases; just generally jumbled. Heating was almost non existant as you (finally!!) approached the room, and the room itself no warmer, staff did finally bring and electric heater after messing with the radiators. The room itself was a good size with room for wheelchairs and a good wet room ( with a thimble size sink ) but the promised "courtyard view" turned out to be a glimpse of the car park through the steps of a fire escape. My wife stayed in a seperate room which was very small with no wardrobe space and a cramped bathroom room it was upstairs, down stairs, upstairs and at the end of a long rambling corridor. Meals taken in the nicely refurbished restaurant were substantial and good quality with an excellent choice for dinner. Overall this place is nowhere near other hotels charging similar prices.

Room Tip: Look before you book if you can, if not, get a really good description from the hotel.

Had an excellent 2 night break. Suite was stunning. Food was very very good. Atmosphere was relaxed and understated. The pool area whilst a little tired was perfect to unwind in and the conservatory aspect made it very pleasant especially when the sun came out.

We stayed here at the beginning of September and overall our stay was average.

We found certain members of the reception staff to be very negative and not at all helpful, almost coming across as confused and not having a clue as to what was actually going on!

Other staff in the hotel however were lovely - a special mention to Ali in the restaurant who was helpful, friendly and for whom nothing was too much trouble.

The food was nothing special and in our opinion slightly overpriced, with slow service. I have eaten much tastier food with a much lower price tag.

In terms of the room we had a lovely modern, clean bathroom although overall I wouldn't describe the room as 4*. We noticed some rips in the sheets and the curtains were hanging off the rail. For the price that we paid per night, I was disappointed...

If we do head to Grasmere again I don't think we will return to this hotel.
