“A lovely traditional hotel”
Reviewed 26 February 2013 via mobile

Many people who have judged the hotel commented on the older customers. I would like to say that is why the hotel is so pleasant. As a single traveler I was looking or some peace and quiet. I found all the other guests were friendly and curious as to my travels. The breakfast was nice and I ate once in the dining room. The food was tasty, hearty and traditional. The hotel was very warm and he constant fire in the living area made it very welcoming. My room small but clean and modern. The bathroom immaculate. If I had one criticism it was that he staff were so polite and proper they felt almost cool, but I can't fault them. I have stayed at three hotels in Grasmere, one very boutique and very over priced, another poplar one in the village that was shabby and full of unruly children and dogs and the Gold Rill. When I return next year I will come back to he Gold Rill. I imagine sitting on the patio with a drink in the summer and the peaceful ambience the hotel provides. Thanks to all the staff for a lovely break....

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights on a Travelzoo deal 15/16th February and we were very pleasantly surprised. We stayed in Room 32 which is in the Lodge just across from the main building with own private parking. In a great location within the village, great for walks etc.
The room was very nicely decorated with the usual mod cons and very warm.
There was plenty of choice at breakfast and dinner, no complaints about the food whatsoever, beautiful! The staff were very attentive and the hotel was very clean.
Would definitely stay here again, a little gem of a hotel.

This review is based upon the fact that we arranged the 2 night stay direct with the hotel quoting the Travelzoo deal which proved excellent value for the discounted price we paid. You might judge the hotel from a different bias if you paid the full price.
The positives.
If you are looking for a very clean, well kept and peaceful hotel this will suit it is classed as a 3 star but from the staffing perspective and little touches of attention to detail it is nearly a 4 star.
All the staff deserve a mention they are an asset to the hotel, they are very attentive, friendly and try very hard to please. The hotel rooms, lounges, and bar areas are spotless and furnished with good quality fittings. We went BBED and the food was freshly prepared and well presented the breakfast was cooked to order. The little touches that made this hotel were well accepted by most of the guests. There were canapes provided in the lounge for half an hour before you went into the dining room for your evening meal. There were copious amounts of tea, sachets of coffee and sugar provided in baskets on each floor level for your use if your room supply run out. Certain free newspapers and umbrellas provided with beautiful views over the lake and fells all added to its charm. There is an outdoor swimming pool for guests use in the spacious hotel grounds but I would not think it is used much except for a few weeks in July! eg The Great British summer.
The negatives.
No major issues but if you want a stag or hen party keep away, as stated the location and the hotel is so peaceful if you require a Club 18-30 venue it is not for you. The hotel has a lot of repeat guests who are like myself members of the over fifties group. The majority of guests are there for the walks and rambles so they retire early and do not prop up the hotel bar late every night.
The only entertainment we found was just a few hundred yards away in a pub (Tweedles) which was attached to a hotel and had live music on every night.
Obviously this is the lake district so the price of food and drinks is not cheap and the bar is dear in the hotel compared to the local pub.
There is no lift in the hotel so if stairs are a problem i would ask if there are any rooms available on the ground floor. i did not see any!
Overall a very pleasant weekend and a great location for fresh air and relaxation and chill out.

Room Tip: There is no lift as stated, but some rooms have lovely views over the lake and hotel grounds.

My husband and i had our first stay here on the 14th & 15th Feb and it is the first of many more to come. Firstly the hotel is in an excellent location perfect for walks from the door or just chilling around grasmere Village shops/garden centre/cafes or pubs. We have stayed at many hotels and country houses and we must say this is one of the most welcoming and relaxing. The public lounge area with its amazing views is perfect for a relaxing drink. Our room was no 26 it was massive with our own seating area with sofa big flat screen tv and coffee table it was lovely. The bed was king size and so comfortable and the decor was lovely bright and clean with curtains, stool and cushion fabric matching. It was so nice going down to pre dinner drinks and canapes with more mature people as they are so polite and friendly. Yes a lot of them have stayed here many times and this is not a bad thing! and they have lots of tales to tell also lots of helpful tips too.
How PaulJM1976 can say that 60 plus and some 80 plus can In his words "it does affect what you do there" NOT at all i'm only 50 and had a fantastic time everyone was chatty and friendly and so welcoming. The food and wine was excellent with lots of choice and the staff were amazing they were fast and efficient without been in your face all the time and nothing was too much trouble. As for the tables and where you sat there didnt seem to be any tention or bad feeling from anyone and we sat at the window every meal. Breakfast had an extensive choice of hot and cold food the full English was beautiful and again the staff were excellent.
We had a chat with the owner on the morning we were leaving and he was a lovely man and had plenty of time for us. we had a fantastic time and we will be back ASAP.

Room Tip: Great for mature friendly people

That title is more an observation than a criticism and I'll explain why.

We stayed here last year, and got a good deal for the week we wanted to go to the lakes for 3 nights, so we decided we'd go back.
In many ways, this review is similar to last times, but it really solidified my feelings about the place.

It's very clean, the rooms are different from the norm, and well equipped, the hotel is comfortable, and the staff are very very professional.
It's in an amazing place - Grasmere is achingly beautiful, and this hotel overlooks a lake, and the usual scenery of the area. The town is in what they call a 'natural ampitheatre' and you see what they mean from the hotel..
It's within a few hundred metres to the local bar type place (really a pub connected to a hotel), and you can walk into the town really easily. Frankly if you can't get that far, you're missing out on the amazing scenery of the lakes anyway.
We walked to two tarns - if you don't know what a tarn is (I didn't!) find you nearest one and go and see it. I was quite choked up!

The first time we came, we noted the general age of the other guests - definitely 60 plus, and some 80 plus - maybe the odd younger couple.
Again, that's no criticism, but as it's such a striking thing about the hotel, it does affect what you do there. We were given dinner thrown in with the deal, but when we walked through the dining room, there were so many older people, not saying much, in their green slacks and red blazers, staring at us, we turned round and went to the pub. When we got back, a waiter virtually chased us up stairs and asked if we were coming to dinner. He was friendly, but totally mystified why we'd go elsewhere.
The second night, we thought we'd chance the hotel restaurant and free meal - it seemed a waste, to be fair.
We sat in the lounge, which is pretty nice and relaxing, had a drink, and got a few canapes brought to us. We were called into the dining room, and the staff went about their jobs with military precision. They are so well trained and polite, I imagine every stay is the same.
The food was pretty nice - home cooked with a nice twist - we liked it.
An older couple, sat on the table behind us with their daughter, asked where we were the night before......They go to the hotel 5 times a year, and were impressed we'd been put on one of the tables "up here", in 'their' hotel - meaning near the windows. Like it's a league table:D They were nice, just a bit odd!
Great meal though.
These people are characters, and a bit offputting for younger people. But that is not the hotel's fault, which is why I've given it a 5 star rating - they did not put one foot wrong - which is probably why they attract older people.

Other 'clientel' issues that caused mirth -

- A really old lady and her husband giving a waiter a really hard time at breakfast about the fact that someone else had been put near the windows more than 1 morning.
- The aforementioned threesome behind us at dinner - the women left very quickly, before her pudding, on the last night. Turns out someone had been sniffing round 'her' sofa in the lounge, so she went to claim it :D
- The welcome pack makes a great deal about you being able to choose your own tables in the morning now, instead of them. I expect this is because of what we noticed on our first visit, when the staff seated us - people complain if someone else gets the window more than once (they are smashing views!)

But this is a little unfair. As I hope I've put across, for the views, the quality of the hotel and service (4* certainly, if the rooms were a little bigger), the food and the price, it's superb.
Thus, my first 5 stars!

Well appointed hotel, convenient for Grasmere centre and walking. Room had lovely views over the lake and mountains. We could not fault the service and meals: extensive breakfast with hot options cooked to order e.g. traditional English, haddock, kippers.....and excellent four course evening meal. Really attentive staff. Comfortable lounge with open fire and views. We would like to visit again and hopefully will find another special offer !

Room Tip: We had a lovely room on the ground floor overlooking the lake.

We stayed here on a special offer winter break that my wife found on the internet. Firstly Grasmere is an excellent place to stay if you like hill walking as it gives easy access to some of the high lakeland fells and also some very good low level walking.
The Golden Rill could not be better situated as you can be in the village in two minutes and you dont' need to use your car to reach any of the local walking. The staff were very welcoming and efficient, the food was excellent and the room was very good. We chose a room at the rear of the hotel and it would be no good for anyone with leg problems as you had to climb quite a few steps but there are others on the lower floors which are really good and have excellent views. Some people's reviews have said that they thought the drinks were expensive but i thought they were just normal prices. We will certainly go there again as do many other guests

Room Tip: As at reception when you book and they will be glad to explain the room positions
