The location of the hotel could not be better with views towards Grasmere and just minutes from the village centre, All members of staff were very friendly and went out of their way to be of service. The lounges are very comfortable and much appreciated when it is lashing down with rain outside. A very nice and unexpected touch was the serving of tasty canapes prior to diiner and the meal itself was excellent - again, with very professional and efficient service in the well appointed restaurant. Good choice of items on the breakfast menu. The only let down was our bedroom, room 21 (suite), which suffered from noise above.

We stayed here after deciding to come away on an impulse, and I'm very glad we did. The whole atmosphere of the hotel was one of comfort and informality, with very attentive staff.

I ordered a steak for dinner on the first night, I think it was the best steak I have ever had! It was cooked beautifully, served on an extremely hot plate which is the kind of detail I appreciate.

The views are incredible, the lounges comfortable and the beds delightful. The staff were all friendly and obliging, and I must make mention of Libby in particular, who went out of her way to be helpful.

We would definitely come back

My partner and I originally booked this hotel through Travel Zoo for March at a discounted rate but could not get there because of snow. We rearranged the date for April and had to pay the full price but we couldnt fault the hotel in any way.The staff are all really helpful and the hotel and rooms are spotless. We were very surprised that this is only a 3 star hotel because we've been in worse 4 star ones. The food is really nice with plenty of choice on each menu. The hotel is quiet on a night but theres Tweedies bar about 150yds away which has live entertainment on which was quit good.We shall certainly be returning here hopefully many times again.

Second visit - not disappointed. Excellent value on Travelzoo offer for DBB fro 2 night stay. Staff most helpful and owner managed by a very hospitable gentleman. The room was cosy up a very steep flight of stairs but spotless with lovely views of the lake. Shower could have been a bit more powerful but apart from that couldn't fault this hotel. It was very warm and comfortable, the food plentiful and with a good choice of menu. Many guests had been going to this hotel for years!
Would definitely go again.

Room Tip: Avoid eaves room if you have walking difficulties! Steep stairs!

Another visit to this hotel, 12 months since the last one. Very little has changed. More East European staff, but very well mannered and pleasant. Same clientele, people that have visited year after year. Bar prices have gone up. Very clean and comfortable.

We nearly always make best use of internet offers and the Gold Rill did not disappoint us . While the room was not the best available ( book early for the best ! ) , the general condition of the hotel was excellent after a refit , the staff were superb and the food on both nights was up the standard of top restaurants in choice , cooking and presentation. A nice touch was to have the owner bringing hors d'oeuvres to his guests before the evening meal .
I wanted to see some of William Wordsworth's history and the cottage was a short walk away. My other must see was Coniston Lake where Donald Campbell died attempting to break the world water speed record. My wife and I spent many hours on a boat trip and at the museum where the rebuilt Bluebird is to be displayed.
Shortly after we stayed in a hotel on the West Wales coast that was so "tired " and the food and staff were so mediocre that we realised what a really good hotel the Gold Rill is.

Room Tip: This hote is popular and in a great location so book early to get the best view

On arrival,we were kindly greeted and asked if we would like to upgrade to a bigger room with a lake view----- we were delighted! So, after one night in our original room,we went off for our walk, and when we returned, our belongings had been moved and were all in our palatial new room, complete with lovely sunlit view! It is true that many guests at Gold Rill are older people, which generally means they are considerate, sociable and appreciative of this excellent hotel, with its' well-trained staff, good food and fabulous location. We had a wonderful time and will most certainly, return.

Room Tip: There is a separate lodge at Gold Rill with excellent rooms, but if offered one of these, bear in mind...
