We stayed in May 2012 and were lucky to have wonderful hot sunny weather for the whole week. We have stayed at the Grasmere Hotel before but it now has new owners Rob and Anton who are a fantastic team. Rob has an eye for detail and the reception areas have been wonderfully and tastefully restored. The bedroom was our own choice and very clean and comfortable. This is a very welcoming and relaxing hotel. Rob is a very good people person. Now I come to the food! What can I say it is just wonderful. Anton is a fabulous chef and cares very much about the quality and presentation of the food. Wonderful!! He is so helpful when it comes to dietry needs they both care very much about their guests.Thank you Pat and Dave

This has been the most enjoyable stay we have EVER had at a hotel. Perfect location and Rob was the most welcoming host being so knowledgeable of the area and really taking the time to discuss the various walks etc on offer. Our room was exquisite being very well presented and extremely comfortable. The food well exceeded any expectation and Anton provided some amazing homemade cuisine. All the staff were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We can't wait for our next stay and look forward to meeting Rob, Anton and all the staff again very soon.

When my husband and I were shown our room, my mouth dropped open. I loved the room. No - I will not tell you which one it was. I want it for my next stay. Sadly, we only stayed there one night. We were walking the Coast to Coast Path and were booked in at the Grasmere by a travel service. But we vowed to return for a two night stay the next time we visit the Lake District.
In addition to a lovely room, we had excellent service. There had been a problem with our luggage transfer, and the helpful manager immediately checked on its whereabouts.

Room Tip: On the internet, review types of rooms available.

Visited this hotel for our anniversary after the usual research. The owners have renovated the reception areas to a high standard - the rooms are elegant and comfortable. They are going to renovate the bedrooms before next season but currently the rooms are lovely. They are all individual and have some period charm. Ours was Shelley on the second floor and it had a wonderful view of the garden, river and hillside. However the rooms on the second floor mean climbing the stairs so I would recommend people with mobility problems ask for a room on the ground floor or first floor. The room was spotless - as was the whole hotel. It was a double bed ( not a king). Pillows could have been better but like I said this hotel is a work in progress. The hair dryer was small and could have been better but the owner took this on board when I told him.
There are some nice touches such as a tray for wet walking shoes that are then dried overnight. And it might sound odd but the welcome book in the room was very good - it explained how the owners came to be at Grasmere Hotel. There was tea, coffee and hot choc plus biscuits in the room.
The garden was lovely and there is a river which runs along the end of the garden - beautiful!
Breakfast was good. The Cumbrian Breakfast was delicious. Other options were kippers, smoked haddock and porridge.
Dinner was excellent quality with nice touches such as canapes as you selected from the menu. Like others have said, you are asked to go down for dinner at 7pm and dinner is served at 7.30pm. This has some advantages in that everyone eats together and there is potential to socialise with other guests but this structure and formality would not suit everyone but you can of course eat out in one of the local restaurants. However if you do, you will miss some truely wonderful food - the chef at this hotel has some impressive dishes. Each dinner has 4 courses and is excellent value. The second course is the usual sorbet but this sorbet was the best I have ever tasted - it was exceptional. Personally I would have preferred a slightly less formal atmosphere but that's just me.
I would recommend this hotel and it sounds like it will get better and better. The owners have worked hard and it shows.
Grasmere is a wonderful base for the a holiday in the lake district. It has a nice selection of cafe's hotels and shops but is fairly quiet

Cannot beat this place for location. Beautiful house. The breakfast/dinning room is excellent with a lovely view across the garden. Definitely worth another visit.

Room Tip: The Jumble room. Great alternative restaurant in Grasmere.
