Rob, Anton and their team at the Grasmere Hotel have hit upon a winning formula: welcome guests as if they mean it, make them comfortable in cozy, well equipped rooms and feed them absolutely fantastic food.
And yes, the food is terrific, in fact, inspired by someone, (Anton), who doesn't do fussy and pretentious; I really felt that our food was made by a chef who enjoyed his craft. I could almost hear him mumbling to himself "This is going to be soo good!"
Breakfast is equally delicious; the continental breakfast is a proper offering and not just a cold croissant, fruit and coffee. Cheeses and meat, and an egg with the fruit and croissant mean that it's just as nice as the "full breakfast" choice.
The team Rob has assembled are among the most pleasant, confident, well educated hotel staff I've had the pleasure to meet in over 25 years of travel. John will help you choose a good wine, tell you what he thinks is especially nice on the dinner menu and take wet hiking boots off to dry. He's brilliant.
If the plan is to take some time exploring the Lake District of northern England, take a few days,(or more), at the Grasmere Hotel and you'll find yourself looking forward to returning a little earlier than perhaps you'd planned from a day taking in sights, in order to enjoy appetizers in the garden or the lounge. We actually built part of our vacation around a two day stay because of the really special time we had there in 2013.
When we left, both Rob, John and the two women who served in the dining room thanked us for coming; and the cool thing is, they actually meant it!

We first stayed at the Grasmere in 2012 shortly after Rob and Anton had taken over. The public rooms had been refurbished but the major changes to the bedrooms had not started. We absolutely loved it!

We are now just back from our second visit and the changes to the bedrooms (as can be seen on the website) are fantastic. We were in Judith and although it is their smallest room it is very nice. Huge windows flood both the bedroom and shower room with light. The shower is large and has options of a handheld or rain shower. There is underfloor heating and plenty big soft white towels. The bed is really comfy and the décor and soft furnishings very tasteful.

As on our last visit customer service is high on the agenda and the staff are excellent. We particularly liked the welcome on our arrival and the coffee and yummiest cake served to us in the garden.

We had the dinner inclusive package – the food is excellent (Anton the chef co-owner trained with John Tovey)) and beautifully presented. There’s a nice choice of menu for such a small hotel (just 11 bedrooms) and its fantastic value for money. Canapés are served before dinner and they also have a very nice wine list.

The Grasmere has flown up the Trip Advisor ratings to number the number one hotel in Grasmere in a very short time - I think that speaks for itself. Oh I nearly forgot to mention it is very hard to get in, we managed a cancellation so if you see a vacant slot book it!

Just returned from a most enjoyable break at the Grasmere Hotel.
This hotel is extremely well run, with friendly and efficient staff;
nothing is too much trouble. Rooms are very clean, comfortable
and stylish, and the food superb.
We are looking forward to our next visit.

What a marvellous time we have had yet again at this very special hotel. Rob and Anton excel in everything they do. They are tip top hosts, so much so that many of the guests return time after time. Anton prepares delicious home-cooked meals, and Rob is front of the house ensuring the smooth running of the hotel. They employ lovely, happy staff who are always eager to please. The hotel rooms are very comfortable, at the end of the day, you just sink into the lovely luxurious beds for a restful night's sleep. I can't recommend this hotel enough, it is very well placed in a lovely village and is surrounded by rolling hills, lovely walks and a beautiful lake. Lots of marvellous memories to take home with us yet again. Thank you Rob, Anton and dedicated staff for making our visit the best it could be - needless to say we will be returning to the Grasmere very soon!!

Just two days here, but how lovely. Rob, Anton and their staff made us very welcome. Rooms are superb, food is sublime. Can't rate the Grasmere highly enough. The little touches are what makes this place special, like the canapés served before dinner, such a thoughtful touch.

Our brief overnight stay was peaceful The staff are unobtrusive and the atmosphere of the hotel was quiet, although this could be due to the number of guests as the hotel was not full. The room was well appointed and met our needs with a good bed that gave a restful sleep. However, it would have been nice to have tea and cakes as other guests have mentioned in their reviews, as on our arrival we had to make use of the milk portions, coffee sachets and packet biscuits which we took in our room. These seemed out of kilter with the way the hotel presented itself. The restaurant served homely food with the starter showing signs of food trends but the main course was not beyond our own capabilities in the kitchen. The breakfast was enjoyable, particularly the homemade jam. Whilst we would happily stay here again we would look elsewhere to eat to meet our foodie needs.

A very special hotel owned and run by two very special people and assisted by a wonderful team of dedicated staff. We have just had the immense pleasure of another memorable visit. Superlatives do not do justice to this most delightful of hotels - quite simply the best in Grasmere.
