“Best Hotel in the Lake District”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

First time we've stayed at Oak Bank Hotel. What a great place to stay. You feel very welcome from the moment you are greeted at the door. We stayed in a Superior room which looked onto the main road and found it cosy, quiet and spacious. The decanter of sherry and home made shortbread was a nice change to the standard fare you get in other hotels. The public areas are great to relax in too, whether you've just finished a big walk or just to read a book in. The log fire gives the space a homely feel and the staff are unobtrusive but always on hand if you need
a cup of tea or some local ales from the bar. I recommend the Collie Wobbles.

A good quality hotel where you will enjoy an excellent experience in the very high quality restaurant. Not to be missed if you enjoy' fine dining'. The restaurant has received excellent reviews from Jay Rayner. Not to be missed if you are in the Lake District.

We decided to stay at the oak bank after reading the reviews on trip advisor, and we weren't disappointed , the food was fantastic so much thought and care in every course , perfectly seasoned and prepared. Also the lovely atmosphere created by the staff , very warm and unpretentious, all in all a very enjoyable weekend, we have raved about it to our family and friends, can recommend unreservedly.

We chose Oak Bank for our Company's Christmas meal after seeing Jay Rayner's excellent review. We were not disappointed. The welcome at reception with its log fire was friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable, large and had masses of hangers and drawers - something often lacking in even the grandest of hotels. Its location at the edge of the village is very convenient for short walks, but is away from the bustle such a popular village experiences. Four of us dined on the evening of our stay. The menu was so good it was hard to choose. We tried to have different food so we could get an idea of the full range on offer. Not only did the plated meals look amazing but the different flavours went together very well indeed. Sometimes an artistic presentation is just that, but here each item had a role to play in the over all taste of the dishes. Every single morsel was eaten. As a previous reviewer said, this is 5 star dining. Even better it is such good value. We have paid more, the four of us, for a company lunch than we spent here on dinner, bed and breakfast. We hope the hotel goes from strength to strength and would most certainly consider a return visit. Excellent all round.

Room Tip: Room 15 was over the kitchen so a bit of an early wake up as the breakfasts were being prepared, but...

No strangers to the Lake District we visited the Oak Bank, Grasmere, for a one-night treat, following up an excellent review by critic Jay Rayner. Our welcome by joint proprietor Glynys Wood was friendly and helpful. Sipping pre-dinner drinks next to a crackling log fire we made our menu choices. It's worth noting that the hotel offers a selection of moderately priced house wines as well as a more expansive selection. The pre-dinner tasters whetted our appetites, and the meal itself was excellent, the dishes were inventive and perfectly cooked, and the presentation was worthy of Tate Britain! We would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Oak Bank whether as a guest or simply to dine. Very good value for money for this kind of Master Chef quality.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the river is a good choice!

We visited Oakbank about three years ago and were so impressed that we said, in the visitors book, that we'd be back, so it was that we turned up on a damp afternoon in January.
We found the hotel to be most welcoming on such a grey day, with a roaring fire in the lounge, and a friendly reception at the desk.
The room we had [6a] was comfortable, clean and spacious, so much so that we had two large armchairs to relax in The bed must have been a 'superking' as it was the biggest we'd ever slept in [but comfortable with it]. More homely were the little touches provided, and the lovely dressing gowns.
Dining was just fabulous, from breakfast to dinner. Breakfast was lacking nothing and provided a perfect start to a days walking. Dinner was the high point of our stay. Highest quality ingredients cooked to perfection in the most imaginative way and presented superbly.[congratulations to a "magic"chef. This should not be missed.
Throughout our three day stay the staff were brilliant, nothing being too much trouble to them.

I've no doubt that we will make this a more frequent destination in the future

From arrival to departure a truly outstanding experience. The customer service is an unresistable blend of professional efficiency combined with warmth and humour. The superior room was really nice but it was the food that makes this place so special. This was fine dining at it's best and must surely be quite unique in a hotel at anywhere near the price charged here. Very highly recommended.
