We stayed after hearing so much about the standard of food at the Oakbank and were certainly not disappointed. From the fresh milk provided in the rooms - along with freshly baked shortbread and a little decanter of sherry, to the amuse bouches that preceded the main meal, we realised that this was going to be something special. The plates of food looked like works of art and tasted amazing. There is attention to detail in every plate served and ingredients seemed to be locally sourced. Fantastic value for money. I look forward to returning.

To celebrate my wife's birthday we returned to the Oak Bank, accompanied by my daughter and son-in-law for two nights. We received the usual warm welcome from Glyniss and Simon who advised my wife and I that we had been upgrade for the duration of our stay to the Acorn Suite. The room was excellent, with a huge comfortable bed and plenty of space. The food during our stay was up to the usual excellent standards and my daughter and her husband were suitably impressed. The waiting staff were very young but were both extremely efficient and knowledgable on the dishes that were being served. The weather during our two day stay was horrendous but the food more than compensated.
Once again a most enjoyable stay and I have no doubt we will all return in the very near future.

Room tip: Any room is excellent but the ones at the back suffer from less traffic noise.

Other recent reviews say it all and I fully endorse them. The Oak Bank is friendly and relaxed, and the meals were the highlight - very high quality, beautifully presented. I can't think of a good reason to stay anywhere else in Grasmere.

Three girlfriends and I stayed at the Oak Bank hotel in Grasmere at the end of our 4-day trekking holiday, having walked from just outside Keswick. We arrived very tired and very wet, and were met with a very warm welcome. We had booked two twin rooms, one superior (room 15) and one standard (room 6a). Both rooms were very comfortable and we found a small decanter of sherry in each room which was exactly what we needed after a long day's walk in the wet fells! A lovely touch! The bath was fantastic - very deep - and good Bath Shop toileteries. We had booked the Dinner, Bed and Breakfast (as I had read such great reviews here TripAdvisor) and we weren't disappointed. The evening meal was fab - after another sherry (!), which was accompanied by some homemade breadsticks, an aubergine dip and some curry nuts, we went through to the dining room. Mobile phones were not allowed in the dining room, which was a welcome relief and made for great conversations, and a lovely atmosphere. The haddock amuse bouche was lovely with a delicate potato crisp. I opted for the chicken starter (it came with some Grasmere gingerbread), followed by the lamb. It was exceptionally good - beautifully presented and very tasty indeed. The two young waiters/waitresses were great - very attentive and knowledgeable about the dishes. We had a pre-dessert coffee pannacotta which was a great surprise. Luckily, we were able to share four of the five desserts (we opted for the cheeseboard and three other desserts). Again, the dishes were well-presented and tasted amazing. We all slept well - the beds are very comfortable and the sheets/duvet very snug. Breakfast was served from 8.15 the next morning - and was the best breakfast of the trip. Proper scrambled egg (how can so many other places get scarmbled egg so wrong) which was rich and creamy, smoked salmon (which was so light) and brioche, with a choice of cereals, fruit, nuts and juices. All the food on the menu is sourced locally. Checking out was very easy - with nothing too much trouble. I would definitely stay here again, and would highly recommend it to anyone who asked where to stay in Grasmere.

We chose to stay at the Oak bank mainly because of the reviews on this site and we were not dissappointed. The hotel itself is a typical small Lake Distict hotel built out of the local slate and from the exterior hasn't changed much since the last time we stayed there over 25 years ago.
What sets this hotel apart from the others is the food and service.
As others have said, the dining experience was exeptional, and the little touches such as the small decanter of sherry and home made short bread in the room every day made our stay a pleasure.
