After reading the reviews on Tripadvisor my husband and I decided that this hotel would be a perfect place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. From the feedback we knew it was going to be good but it even surpassed our expectations. Everything was just perfect. When we arrived we were welcomed by the receptionist who was very pleasant. Our room was the standard room which size wise was more than adequate (we asked to look around the superior and superior plus before we left and if its extra space you are looking for then go for the superior plus as these are very spacious complete with sofa - all rooms nicely and what would appear newly decorated and spotlessly clean as is the rest of the hotel). Exceptionally comfy bed. The room was lovely and warm and there was a hospitality tray with tea, coffee, chocolate but also a small decanter of sherry which was a very pleasant surprise especially as it is a favourite tipple of my husband, nice treat for a winter's evening. We went down for dinner. there are two separate lounge areas, and we sat in the one which has the nicely set out bar. The ambiance was perfect with a roaring log fire at the other end of the room and beautiful candles on each table. Very nice pictures on the wall too. We were handed the menu by a very pleasant waitress who also brought us very tasty canapes while we made our choices. Our taste buds were tantalised by the choices but we managed to decide on what to eat after much deliberation. The food was excellent, as good as anywhere we have eaten, and very well presented. The staff attentive to our every need but never in your face. Desserts to die for and attention to detail very apparent with the menu in general. There is a dessert wine menu which also offers a selection of nice ports (another of my husband's favourite tipples!) and cheeses. After finishing our meal we retired to the lounge to sit by the wonderful log fire. We ordered very enjoyable brandy coffee's then retired feeling delighted with ourselves for finding this gem of a hotel. Breakfast was well organised, a good selection of cereals, juices, as much coffee/tea as you would like and again you notice the attention to detail on the breakfast menu which explains where the produce is from i.e.local farms. It is very apparent that these hoteliers want everything to be perect for their guests and take great care in every aspect of their business - and it really was perfect for us. We have stayed in many many hotels in our 23 years of marriage but this is definitely one of the best, most exceptional and tremendous value for money into the bargain!! We never go to the same place twice but we have promised ourselves we are going back to Oak Bank at some point in the near future. Don't hesitate in booking this little peace of heaven on earth.

Our first stay at the Oak Bank Hotel and we were very impressed. Spotlessly clean, comfortable, excellent food, lovely location, helpful friendly service. We stayed in the Iris Suite - a lovely room with a four poster bed and balcony with furniture overlooking the garden. Very peaceful. Simon and Glynnis work very hard to make everyone feel welcome. We will definitely be going back.

We came from Belgium with our 3 teenagers in our 1955 classic car (the gearbox failed to proceed in Grasmere - Simon will remember). Owners are very friendly and more than helpful. We got a comfortable and large family room. As many satisfied customers on Trip Advisor we confirm that the food is excellent (first class cuisine, well done chef). The service is also very good. We'll be back in 2011.

We have just spent a fantastic 3 nights at Oak Bank. Each day was a real pleasure as the staff were all so efficient, friendly and helpful and the food was superb. The choices for breakfast included sliced smoked salmon with a beautifully formed portion of scrambled egg as well as the full Oak Bank grill which was again, beautifully served. This set us up well for the long walks and climbs we took on each day. On return, after a long soak in relaxing bath crystals, then a stroll round the village, we were ready for supper. Each evening we were completely spoilt with a wide range of delicacies which would tempt any palate. Even with an additional supplement, the cheese board was a must each evening. Simon and Glynis, along with their team work so hard to make the hotel work for their guests. For the first time away anywhere I was not keen to get home! Thank you all so much. We look forward to our next visit!

We stayed at the Oak Bank for one night at the end of June.

The hotel is charming. We were checked in promptly, and the procedure for dinner was explained to us. Our room was clean, spacious, and nicely appointed. The only initial problem was that the room was quite warm. This was not unexpected given that the area was experiencing some unseasonably warm weather. We were quite sure that as the evening progressed, the room would cool down.

After a walk around town, we returned to the room to prepare for dinner. The room felt as if it was actually getting warmer. It dawned on me that the heat of the day was being compounded by the heat from the kitchen which, I believe, was directly below the room. Again, we fully expected that the cool of the evening and the cessation of cooking activities would result in a much more comfortable environment.

Dinner was absolutely wonderful, and was enhanced by the company of the other guests at nearby tables.

Returning to our rooms after another walk around town, we found that there was no improvement. In fact, the en suite now seemed to be radiating heat of its own.

There was no way that we were going to be able to get to sleep under those conditions, so I finally went downstairs to inquire about an electric fan. I was told, apologetically, that all of the fans were in use.

Resigned to a night without sleep, I returned to the room. Perhaps 15 minutes later, there was a knock on the door and a gentleman who I presume was one of the owners, provided us with a fan. It made all the difference in the world, and changed what otherwise would have been a very uncomplimentary review into one that is much more favorable.

Breakfast, once again, was outstanding in every way.

I would most certainly be comfortable in recommending the Oak Bank for an enjoyable stay, but I would strongly encourage ownership to purchase enough fans to ensure that at least one was available for every room. I know that warm weather is not usually a concern, but for an establishment that does everything else so well, failing to provide for the comfort of all the guests under such circumstances is disappointing. The investment would be small in comparison with the benefits derived from the goodwill that would be generated.

Thank you ‘Daddy G’ for your largely complimentary review of Oak Bank. We are glad that you would recommend us for an enjoyable stay.

Daddy G said, ‘the area was experiencing some unseasonably warm weather’, which is very true but also completely understated. Our thermometers were reading 30 degrees centigrade outside in the shade! The temperature and more to the point, the humidity was very uncomfortable to even stand or sit in, never mind work or sleep in.

The room occupied is indeed above the kitchen but since the kitchen was refitted with very good extraction in November 2008, very little heat will rise into the two bedrooms above. This bedroom catches the sun from sunrise to sunset and it is the sun that would have generated the heat in the room and en-suite. Once the sun had gone down if you went outside obviously it would be cooler, but then the building that would have absorbed the sun’s heat all day would then start to release it, outside and unfortunately inside too. The whole hotel was hot and I imagine most other hotels and guest houses (or any building for that matter) would have the same problem if they were facing the sun, unless they had air conditioning, which after making calls to other hotels in the village to ask if they have air conditioned bedrooms is extremely rare and if you want it you’ll certainly pay for it!

Ironically, as I write this response and for the last week, the temperature is 12 degrees centigrade cooler in the shade during the day and colder to the extent that we are having to run the heating before bedtime and in the early morning before guests rise for their comfort! British summers!

We will consider fans for the other bedrooms, there is only one other bedroom that catches the sun all day - the others catch it either first thing or later in the day, however, we would struggle to store them for the 50 weeks of the year they wouldn’t be required, or they would clutter up the bedrooms when not in use. We have also considered air conditioning for the future, but for now we have other areas we feel would be better invested in for the comfort and overall guest experience.

Oak Bank offers excellent food, comfortable bedrooms and lounges and is regularly described as a home from home by many guests whether regulars or newcomers. During the current economic climate the value offered by our dinner, bed and breakfast tariff, particularly with the quality of the food we offer is second to none and it shows that ‘Daddy G’ only seems to fault us on something that is largely beyond our control without the aid of air conditioning, something that I’ve no doubt we will install in areas of the hotel within the next few years.

We wish we did have more control over the weather – it would be compulsory for rain to only fall overnight for a start.....!

We have just returned from a wonderful 3 night break at Oak Bank and we're so impressed we are going back soon. The hotel is run by the owners, Glynis & Simon, who were always on hand throughout the day. Our room was very comfortable and spacious, with a newly refurbished bathroom; the bed was really comfy and we had the best nights sleep ever in a hotel. Little extras such as luxury toiletries, bottled water and sherry daily, made for a lovely stay.
However, the food was the highlight with a wonderful selection at both breakfast & dinner, all cooked to order - it's well worth paying the extra for the best 4 course dinner in Cumbria; even a non-meat eater like me was spoiled for choice at the selection of fish and vegetarian dishes on offer, and the puddings are to die for! After dinner we helped ourselves to a selection of coffees in the lounge, which was serviced with chocolate petit fours.
The Hotel is in a great location, just a minutes walk into the village centre but away from the hustle and bustle of day-trippers.
We're really looking forward to our next visit - very soon!
