“An absolute gem of a hotel, with food to match!”
Reviewed 31 May 2010

My partner and I stayed at the Oak Bank for four nights in late May, and I can honestly say that it was the best experience of a hotel that we have had in the Lake District. It is extremely well presented and in a beautiful location, plus Simon and Glynis (the owners) were excellent hosts who, along with their staff, worked really hard to ensure our stay was enjoyable. We booked the hotel on the strength of the TripAdvisor reviews and were delighted we did so. The standard, variety and seasonality of the food is worth a special mention, as is the extensive, well considered wine list, at very reasonable prices. We also met some lovely fellow travellers there, which further enhanced the pleasant atmosphere, especially at dinner.

We will definitely be returning, hopefully in the near future and have already recommended the hotel to family and friends.

we stayed at the oak bank from thursday 20th may until 25th may 2010, I can not believe the oak bank hotel is only 2 star with the food as excellent as it is. this is our 4th year here on the trot the food has improved every year to the excellent standard as it is today.Every room is being refurbished to a comfortable standard. After a great day walking from this prime position hotel you are welcomed with a greating smile which sets you up for the great evening meal ahead. As for Gylnis and Simon what a great team always there for a laugh and to listen to your day what more can we say roll on next year...........................................we're coming back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!see you in 2011 xxxxx

We were met on arrival with indifference, and shown to our room. The dinner was very ordinary, I had guinea fowl which franlky tasted of nothing. My partner's meal was similarly uninspired. After the meal we were chatting with some of the other guests in the lounge. No-one realised that the owner who was pretending to do other things, was really listening to our conversation. He latched on to our comments about the meal, and suddenly rounded on us, asking if we were talkiing about him. He then became extremely unpleasant, saying that we had been nothing but trouble since our arrival, and he clearly did not want us staying there. It was very upsetting, and the other guests we were talking with were similarly distressed. We had a sleepless night, and left before breakfast to return home. What was meant to be a pleasant few days away had turned into a nightmare. We left the Lakes never wanting to return.

We have chosen not to address the points raised in this review, as it is written unfairly more than two years since the stay and in no way accurately reflects the level of service and hospitality that is given at Oak Bank Hotel. Our AA 2 Rosette award reflects the quality of our food and the majority of the reviews we have been given on TripAdvisor show what you can expect from us.

This will be our 6th trip to Oakbank. Each year around 20 of us "take over" the hotel. We are always met with a warm welcome and the rooms are gradually being upgraded. The food is exceptional and presented beautifully. We are left to sit around after the meal having a chat and a drink with Simon appearing at the bar at the right time! Fantastic value for money and well worth a visit.

We first enjoyed a stay at the Oak Bank in July 2008 when it facilitated a 30th birthday and engagement celebrations. A year on, and after numerous visits to discuss related preparations, the Taylor / Steed contingent returned to the Oak Bank on mass. The occasion? – it was the venue for our wedding reception. Although several of us arrived at the Oak Bank on Thursday 9th July, we booked all Oak Bank accommodation for the Friday and Saturday.

Simon, Glynis and the team yet again delivered a sterling performance. On the afternoon / evening of Saturday 11th July, the Oak Bank provided a marquee wedding for 97 guests enjoying a champagne reception, canapés, three course meal and late night snacks, all whilst delivering a continuity of service and attentiveness throughout the duration of our stay.

We initially enquired about whether the Oak Bank would be interested in hosting our ‘big day’ in the autumn of 2008. To say that this was a big ask is an understatement. The Oak Bank is a smallish (not in a negative way I might add), family run hotel that hadn’t previously sold a wedding package of this size to guests. Simon and Glynis considered the enquiry for a few days and then agreed to host the occasion. Several meetings to discuss the preparations and the exchange of some sorely missed (I’m sure Glynis?) correspondence all culminated in the best experience of our lives.

To name a few: the Oak Bank team, Heathcoates, St Oswald’s church, Lorraine at Bowness Photography, Debbie the cake lady and the flower shop in Ambleside all excelled. A very big thank you to you all, and in particular, Simon and Glynis – you’re the best and we hope to see you soon.

With best wishes,

James & Emily.

We picked the hotel purely by exterior look and location. Little did we know how welcoming Simon Wood and Glynis Brown would be. We were shown to our rooms and invited to dine as soon as we were ready. We sat in their parlor for cocktails and conversation with other lodgers. Our table in a beautifully appointed dining room had a view of the garden and was quite comfortable. The food was exquisite and the service was impeccable. We had intended to stay only one night, but we were lucky enough to be able to stay another night. The second night we were able to meet the chef who we complimented profusely. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the staff and owners of Oak Bank Hotel and would highly recommend this wonderful establishment.

We stayed for 5 nights in March this year for the first time at this hotel. It is the first time we have stayed in a hotel in the Lake District as we always camp but decided to treat ourselves this time and what a treat it was. The location, setting and style of hotel is fantastic. The rooms in the hotel were faultless and the decor all fresh and to a very good standard. The bedroom was lovely, we had a superior room on the front of the hotel. The staff were all very friendly and accomodating. We also had our dog staying with us which worked out well and its nice to know we have somewhere in the Lakes we can take the dog with us. There is a recreation ground 1 minute walk away from the hotel so it makes it easy having somewhere for the dog to stretch it's legs! The walks you can do from the hotel are amazing, and you need not take your car out again if you do not want to.

We stayed dinner bed and breakfast for all 5 nights and found this to be very good value. We could not fault the food at all. The whole process for breakfast and dinner was seamless. The staff work incredibly hard and seem to anticipate your ever need. The food options for both breakfast and dinner are superb and we were never disappointed. The evening menu was a great chance to try something you wouldn't usually cook yourself.

I would not hesistate to recommend this hotel to anyone.
