Town Head Farm B & B

My husband and I stayed here on our C2C journey. We telephoned the farm as not sure where to go once in Grasmere and were offered a lift from the centre. This was great as I had been suffering with a bad knee all day. We were given a warm welcome with homemade cake in the guest lounge. Our room was homely and comfortable. Our only complaint really was the bathroom. After a long walk a bath was just what we needed and although there was one, there was no plug and a notice saying showers only! Disappointed. After a meal at the local pub we came back in the cold to find hot water bottles had been placed in the bed - that was a lovely touch. Breakfast the following morning was plentiful and tasty. Would recommend although the owners are retiring this year.

Arrived after a wet days walk to a warm hospitable welcome. Our wet waterproofs were hung up by the fire to dry. Drying boots is more problematic and is not the only place where this is a problem. Even in the hottest of drying rooms we were still pulling on wet boots in the morning.

The bed was comfortable and the room warm, not complaints. The shared bathroom is just across the hall and not a problem. Guests have the use of a downstairs lounge with a fire. This is also where breakfast is served. Lovely breakfast. Only slight down side is the lack of guest WiFi and a bit of a walk back into town. This means though that you are back on the C2C in about 5 minutes as it is a downhill walk to the path. Jackie and Donald are friendly hosts

Town Head Farm is an extraordinary building with impressive Jacobean woodwork in the rooms used by guests. The proprietor was in many ways very welcoming and visitors have use of a comfortable lounge with a stove, whcih she kindly lit as it was cold and wet (in August)! She also provided home made cake and tea and coffee facilities in the lounge. The room was a reasonable sized double and had more of this extraordinary woodwork.
For me however there were three things which let the place down: first, the drying facilities were limited for a B & B taking in Coast to Coasters who are liable to arrive wet after floundering about on Greenup Edge, as we had been. She stuffed our boots with paper and put them by the stove to dry but it was on a low heat and they did not dry overnight. There were no tumble drying facilities to be had for other wet gear. She did hang my gaiters and waterproof trousers in an outhouse but in this location the scope for drying gear seemed inadequate. Second, the shared bathroom has a large, inviting looking bath. It also has a sign saying "No baths, showers only" and the bath plug has been removed to prevent you using the bath. This seemed very poor, even mean, to me. Third, she will not let you use her wi-fi, although there is not much of a phone signal there, certainly not on 3G. This is the first time I have stayed anywhere that has wi-fi but will not let the guests use it.
This seems a shame as Town Head Farm is otherwise a very inviting place, but if you are doing the C2C I would suggest you try somewhere else in Grasmere.

Beautiful location, clean and very characterful old farmhouse, delicious sticky coffee cake on arrival, and very tasty breakfast, served unexpectedly and totally beyond call of duty at our very early start time. Excellent stay. Would recommend.

After a lazy day visiting Grasmere, because we were rained out of our walk, Town Head Farm was the perfect place to spend the night. Jackie helped us right from the start getting our clothes dried out, having tea for us, etc. The house is beautiful, built around 1700. Breakfast was great and we headed off on our next day, well-rested and well fed.

We stayed at Town Head Farm for a night here on the coast to coast walk. The room was very pleasant, tastefully decorated, overlooking a lovely garden, and Jackie had placed a posy of fresh flowers in it. Breakfast was good and the welcome warm. It is a short walk into Grasmere, and we got a taxi back from dinner, simply because we had had enough walking that day. IThe taxi cost less than £5. Altogether a very pleasant stay on a working farm. Very good value.
