“Repeat Visit To A Good Hotel”
Reviewed 8 July 2011

We visited this hotel with friends for a two night bed and breakfast weekend break, after enjoying a similar stay in 2010. Once again we found the hotel staff to be very welcoming and they provided great service at reception and in the restaurant.. The hotel has a very traditional feel to it with a large and comfortable lounge and bar area. Access to the adjoining Lamb Inn, can be obtained directly from the reception area. Very good bar meals and beer are served at the Lamb Inn. We had a large double room which was very clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. The ensuite bathroom was very disappointing and although clean, the decor was tired and dated. We discovered that the bathrooms on the third floor had been refurbished, but we were unfortunately on the floor below. The weather was warm but the heating in the room was kept far too high making the room quite hot. We did not try the evening meal this year as we found the restaurant to be lacking in atmosphere, although the food served is good.
The breakfast was excellent, providing the full english along with cereals, fruits and continental preferences.
The hotel does not provide sufficient parking spaces, compared to most other hotels in the village. This is due to the central location of the hotel which is probably the oldest in Grasmere, and not located within its own grounds.
The hotel has a small health club and the swimming pool is well worth trying out.
Despite the bathroom we thoroughly enjoyed our stay once again, and will probably return next year.

Room Tip: Ask for the third floor where bathrooms are new.

This is a Best Westeern Hotel, complete with an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, small gym and it's own pub! To the right of the reception area is a massive guest lounge where you can while away the time relaxing with your book and a drink (yes, there's a small bar in there too!) The pub serves up good pub grub and puddings with a friendly atmosphere, where locals bring in their dogs too. Next to the pub is the restaurant where you can eat an sumptious evening meal and go for your breakfast. Breakfast was amazing, complete with kippers, smoked haddock, mackeral, assortment of cereals, cheeses, breads, and the "standard" full English breakfast. Our room for clean and had 2 armchairs and a kingsize bed, and the bathroom had an extra long bath. We paid 96 pounds for bed and breakfast. You can pay extra for the evening meal if you include it in your b and b payment, which in hindsight would have been worth it once I had seen the menu. Perfectly located for all the Wordsworth places, and some incredible hikes, and also Grasmere Lake.

When I booked my club room I was advised that all of these type of rooms has been refurbished and looked like the rooms on the hotels website so I booked up and paid £144b&b. When I arrived and got to my room I was shocked; the rooms were dated, with poor furnishings and in desperate need of an update, the bathroom was not much better.

I went to reception to ask if I'd been given the right room and she explained that what I had was better than some of the other rooms and that only 10 of the rooms has been refurbished. I said that I was unhappy and thought that the rate paid didn't meet the standard but she said there was nothing else she could do.

We then asked for a refund and check out. Be warned if booking for the first time the standard of the rooms do not reflect the website.

We were so looking forward to our stay and this hotel was so disappointing.

We have been coming to the hotel for 8 years and it just gets better and better. Reception staff are very welcoming and professional from Carrie and Julie who have been there forever to Emma who checked us in and out and was her same cheery self on both occasions. We ate in the restaurant both nights and as always we had no complaints, food and service was very good. We stayed in one of the suites which is more expensive but worth every penny, larger bed, plenty of seating and a fantastic bathroom with a very large bath. The pool, jakuzzi and sauna are very welcome at the end of the day after a nice walk. The lads in the bar are always pleasant and my husband can recommend the ales. My only gripe concerns the coffee which was provided for restaurant diners, and has recently been withdrawn due to non diners helping themselves. I am sure there is a better way to supervise this so restaurant diners can recieve their complimentary coffee again.

Good Morning,

Firstly thank you for taking the time to write your review and we are very happy to see that you have been coming to the hotel for years and believe it continues to improve.

Can I just explain the coffee situation. We have removed the coffee from the 5 course menu as we are committed to keep costs affordable for our guests. The 5 course was £28.95, we have removed the coffee and reduced the price to £20.00, so that’s £8.95 saving per person. The cost of a coffee is £2.25. You will probably agree this is a much better way for the guests.

Once again thank you kindly and we will continue to improve, hoping each stay is better than the last.

We look forward to welcoming your return.

Regards

We stayed at the Red Lion on our way to Scotland.
The staff were really friendly and check in was fast.
We went to our room and was very disappointed. The room was very small and the bed was so uncomfortable. The bathroom was very small and a bit tatty. It was very noisy at night with people in the corridor.
The Lamb Inn was great and the food delicious and the portions very big.
The lounge at the Red Lion was very comfortable.
We didn't use the pool but it looked great.
Breakfast was okay but nothing special.
We didn't think it was worth the money and glad we were only
staying one night.

Good Morning,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are committed to continuous improvement.

I am glad you found all the staff friendly and helpful and enjoyed dinning in the Lamb Inn. If you have stayed at the Red Lion before you will see the amount of changes happening and we are continuously improving the decorations and facilities here without cause disruption to our guests. All rooms have recently been re-decorated, however still awaiting new suites.
I can ensure you that all this work is on-going and hope this does not deter your return.

Once again thank you for your comments.

Kind Regards

Yet again another fantastic stay. We first found this hotel about 4 years ago and we are completely hooked.

The hotel and area are amazing and the staff are just the best from Emma and the girls on the desk to Claudia and the boys in the restaurant. We were completely looked after and spoilt, whether it is having a romatic evening meal or to having lunch in the Lamb Inn all our needs were catered for. Tom/Kyle/Adam who work in the Lamb Inn were always politie, friendly and full of fun and this was projected in their working practices and they made us feel so welcome and their jokes and banter. The food in the Lamb Inn was exceptional and service was first class and could not be faulted. Our rooms were spotlessly clean and and the domestic staff were lovely and pleasant and even the maintainence man made us laugh.

They have a sign on the desk as you walk in and it reads.....ENTER AS STRANGERS LEAVE AS FRIENDS......well since that last visit was our 10th visit this is the only place that we will go back to as we have made a lot of new friends in the hotel from staff to guests that are booked in the same time as us, to the villagers and shop owners. Grasmere is simply a peace of heaven on earth and the Red Lion is just the place you want to stay in after a hard trek on the hills.
Well done to everyone this is the only place we would recommend to our family and friends and work colleagues infact everyone should visit.
