Just come back from a fabulous 5 day stay at the above hotel and I can honestly say that this was the best hotel that we have stayed in Grasmere. I took my other half as a surprise birthday present and they even put the Christmas decorations up too which added to her birthday. They have a saying on the desk... Enter as strangers and leave as friends.... Never a truer word spoken. As soon as we walked through the door it was like being greeted by family and not staff and we were made to feel at home immediately. The food was excellent in the Lamb Inn and The Courtyard and they even made a little cake with a candle for her birthday which was a wonderful touch. The room was immaculate, cosy with gorgeous views of the hills. The staff are all fantastic and nothing was a bother. I know that hotels get a lot of negative press but all I can say to Chris is that you have an excellent team who are courteous polite and professional and the hotel has that warmth around it that just makes you want to go back. Well done to everyone and Charley we had a great time and we will back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the air conditioning unit

My wife and I last visited this hotel almost 40 years ago. We loved it then, and greatly enjoyed this return visit. We had a club room, which was very good indeed - including a very useful sitting/TV area (there were in fact 2 TVs in the room - the other facing the bed!).
We used the restaurant on both evenings of our visit, and enjoyed the food and wine a lot. The breakfasts too were excellent with good choices. We found the public areas very comfortable and enjoyed our use of the spa.
The staff and the other guests were also very pleasant. I notice that one of the most recent reviews was from one of the group of retired headteachers, who were there at the same time as us. It was great to see them enjoying themselves so much!

Room Tip: I only saw our room, but we felt it had been worth paying the extra for a club room.

Not a good hotel. The bar staff who just seemed not to be wanting to be there. Drinks & food orders wrong, not just ours but other guests. Room ok but bathroon so small, shower tempramental, took ages to get it at right pressure & temprature. Needed desparatley updating, mould around bath/tiles, rubber seal broken in places on shower screen. Shelf looked as though it was goning to fall off any time soon. Reception staff on check out don't know 'please & thank you.' I've stayed in Grassmere plenty of times at other hotel/guest houses, use them, they are much friendlier and better

Just returned from a short stay at The Red Lion, accompanied by 7 retired friends. Our plan was to walk, eat, drink and have some fun.... and we did just that, but not necessarily in that order.
The Red Lion was superb, staff were excellent and Receptionist Megan was very helpful.
The rooms were clean and could boast a jacuzzi in each of the four rooms booked. Breakfast was a feast each day, but I found the porridge quite sweet.
We had an evening meal - 5 courses - and that was a rainbow of delight, great value for money.
I must mention Julie who was also helpful and friendly. Some of us are returning in February, so that should be an indicator to the quality of accommodation and service receive.

Room Tip: Ask for unsweetened porridge.

Thanks to the staff at the Red Lion for looking after the Climb of Life team, arranging for an early breakfast for us, and being very helpful and smiley. The spa was very well received after an extremely wet day up a mountain!
My only criticism was that the car parking is tight and I had to park away from the hotel (near a lawned area in the village) as the car park was full anyway.

We stayed in the Coleridge suite which gave good views looking up to heron crag on one side & the fells the other. Room had a large comfy bed with small tv ( but this was not used) & the usual drinks with kettle at hand. Bathroom was clean, tidy with everything well presented.
Evening meal was very good with excellent service. I did question where the locally sourced "swordfish" came from as described in the menu! After we retired to lounge for coffee & liqours.
Rudely awoken early next am by kids in adjacent suite @ 6:30 & no amount of knocking on wall helped to quiten them. Put our music on & probably woke some other guests & did comment to teception later.
Full breakfast very good value & certainly not rushed.
Pool could have been warmer as could the sauna.
Some comments refer to the tired look but it wasn't noticeable as the furnishings are very comfortable.
We had been here some years before the Lamb Inn had been upgraded but seems to have lost its character now. The parking was ok for us but it seemed a bit of pot luck really.
We would go back again as its in a lovely setting. The staff were very pleasant & helpful. It has the extra facilities some others do not have in the village but these could be improved.
