“Short break in Grasmere”
Reviewed 26 April 2013

Just back from a 4 day break in Red Lion Hotel Grasmere and had a really lovely time. Wanted to take the dog and that was no problem. The room was lovely and clean. The food was excellent and the service couldn't have been better. The staff were great and the dining room staff, especially Klaudia, Tomas and Zoltan were great. They are a credit to the hotel.Oh and the fact that the dog was allowed in the conservatory was great.

We were originally booked into the Burnside Hotel in Windermere on a KGB two night deal with friends of ours, but the hotel had a coach booking and asked if we would move to their sister hotel, the Red Lion, in Grasmere. I thought it would have been churlish to refuse, so we moved, the offer of a bottle of wine would have been nice, as we were doing the hotel a favour, but that wasn't forthcoming, never mind, we can't all be good at customer service! It then took three phone calls to the Burnside to get confirmation of the change, by which time I was somewhat annoyed, still, the email arrived eventually.

However, on arrival at the Red Lion, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The rooms were ready when we arrived, and though we were 2 hours early there was no issue with us checking in and unpacking.

The location is great, within walking distance of the pretty little village and Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, the museum, and The Gingerbread Shop! Lots of nice coffee shops and restaurants around and I would imagine in summer it is very busy. We had a lovely stroll around and also visited the church and the Daffodil Garden, very nice.

In the hotel are large public rooms which are comfy, with lots of sofas and seating areas, and had it been warm enough, a terrance with tables and chairs. The bedrooms are clean, modern and comfortable. The bathroom was small, but had everything you need and the water pressure was brilliant. The swimming pool is in the conservatory type room, nice size and big enough to swim lengths as opposed to just laze, and very pleasant, the sports equipment in the fitness centre is very basic, but it worked for us. Though it is in a small airless room, it is probably adequate for the type of hotel.

We had our evening meals in the restaurant, and it was fabulous. Four course with coffee at £20 on special offer was a bargain. Beautifully cooked and served, and the staff were very excellent, friendly and helpful, with nothing too much trouble. We had originally decided to eat only one meal there, but had both evening meals in, it was so good. The menu changes every day too. Superb.

All the staff from reception to housemaids, bar and cleaners were happy, helpful and very pleasant.

So the change worked for us, we did go to the Burnside as we had booked spa treatments, (incidentally, the facial was one of the best I've had,) but we all agreed we preferred the Red Lion!

Room Tip: There are some suites which are larger with seating area.

What more can we say about this hotel that hasnt all ready been said. From the second my girlfriend and i walked through the door to check in we were greeted by Amy, a happy, smiling face behind reception. Our room was fantastic with brilliant views of the fells front and rear. we then went for a meal at the lamb inn where yet again we were greeted by Tom and Adam behind the bar who make you feel at home. the meal was gorgeous (i would recommend the Fish And Chips) The next morning there was the breakfast with copious amounts of choice there was something to suit everybodys tastes, this was served up by Claudia and her team. Grasmere is only a small village but there is loads to see from Wordsworths 2 houses to a big lake of further affield a couple of caves. We would TOTALY recomend this hotel with great staff, great rooms, great location, great views etc etc etc

Stayed here in jan for two nights on a KGB deal. The staff were friendly, the room was perfect (stunning bathroom with deep sunken bath for two) and the facilities were excellent. Breakfast both mornings was gorgeous and the service excellent. Leisure facilities are also very nice. The pool is quite cold though but warms up once you get swimming.
We enjoyed the lounge areas and sat by the fire having a drink in the evening followed by complimentary tea/coffee. The whole stay was perfect and the hotel was always lovely and warm to return back to after being out in the snow and rain. Wouldn't hesitate to book another trip here, it's excellent value for money.

We love this hotel. The service is first rate and the breakfasts are excellent, fresh clean food beautifully served and overseen extremely efficiently by Tamas. The environment is clean, friendly and the facilities provide everything you might require from a few nights stay in the lakes. The comfortable Lounge for a quiet read or family game, the leisure facilities or a few drinks in the Lamb all make for a very pleasant couple of nights at competitive rates for a stay in this beautiful Lakeland village.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your comments.

I do believe the title is unjustified when you gave praise to all departments apart from the bar.

I have implemented changes to ensure that the service is better moving forward.

Once again thank you & we would like to see you again in the future.
