“Lovely Old Inn in the centre of Grasmere.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2008

This hotel was very clean, nicely furnished and the room was very comfortable apart from the smell of cigarette smoke coming through the vent in the en suite from other ensuites. It is a non smoking hotel and we think that the smokers were going into their bathroom to smoke as the bedroom has a smoke detector installed and so the rest of the hotel guests were having to put up with the awful smell. The hotel is right in the centre of Grasmere and although our room was on the front we didn't get a lot of noise late at night. The hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful. Each morning we were served a great full English breakfast. We didn't have dinner or a bar meal at all so we can't comment on that but the menu in the bar was good. We didn't like the part of the bar where they served the food. It could do with an upgrade to make it more comfortable. The main lounge was large and very comfortable with lovely sofas and chairs. We would stay in this hotel again providing we got a completely smoke free room.

  • Liked — It looked out onto the Red Lior Square.
  • Disliked — The smell of cigarette smoke

We stayed at the Red Lion for two nights while walking in the Lake District. It was excellent. Great rooms which were kept clean and had a brilliant spa bath!. Lovely pool to chill out in after getting rained on during the day and really nice bar/seating area for a drink and chat. Staff were really good and the manager was very friendly and always willing to do anything to help. Great location in the village with it's own pub next door which again had very friendly staff and good food.

We would reccommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area.

  • Liked — Everything really.

The hotel is clean, friendly and comfortable. The rooms are slightly dated but it has that "lake district feel".

Check in was good and friendly, and the champagne and chocolates were waiting for us in the room as ordered. We had booked a club room which turned out to be the Ruskin Suite. It was enourmous! The sitting area was comfortable, the air conditioning very good and the views amazing. Could even see the cows on the hills! The room was fairly quiet, only hearing next door noise for 5 minutes that evening. For the size of the room, however, the TV was a bit small - could hardly see it from the bed! The bathroom was also clean and comfortable with amazing views of the hills whilst in the shower! Only criticism would be the bed and pillows - it was uncomfortable. Not good for bad backs!

The bar area was very comfortable, with a lovely conservatory to have sundowners before dinner. We did not have an evening meal at the hotel. We went to Sara's but would go to the Jumble room the next time we visit as it looks cosy and have heard about the good food.

There is a large sitting area next to the bar - a nice place to read the newspaper in the morning.

My husband used the swimming pool which he said was very clean and relaxing.

Location is very good - our view looked out over the centre of Grasmere which is a small village with a nice feel about it. Try the gingerbread shop - wonderfull!!!

Breakfast was very fresh, made to order and service was good. It was also served from 8-10 so could have a lie in if wanted!

Overall a very comfortable stay- no major problems apart from the bed!

Would stay again, but with so many other hotels in the area would like to try them out also.

worst hotel i have ever had the misfortune to stay in. room bordered on shabby, bathroom totally inadequate, in fact ridiculously small. and the bed had a wooden board under the matress....apparently housekeeping forgot to remove it!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2008

This was our second stay at the Red Lion and it was just as good as last time, if not better! Staff are very friendly and welcoming. The lounge is a lovely place to read a book or have a post-dinner complimentary coffee and chocolate mint (or three). The pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna are fab and were surprisingly quiet on a Saturday afternoon (we had the leisure area to ourselves!). The breakfast was very tasty and there was a good variety of food. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and it was good, but there wasn't a great variety of main meals; the food was fine, but perhaps not quite in line with the price (around £20 for two courses). We ate in the Dove and Olive Branch pub on our second evening and the food there was incredible (and cheaper than the Red Lion)! Really romantic setting too.
Grasmere is a really lovely village and one of the best things about it is that is you're away for a weekend, you can park your car on a Friday and not need it again until the Sunday as there's enough to see and do.
All in all we definitely would highly recommend the Red Lion. We'll certainly be returning!

  • Liked — The friendly, welcoming atmosphere and the spa facilities
  • Disliked — The dinner (but it wasn't bad by any means!)

We stayed here two years ago in a double standard room, which was more than adequately sized, but this time we booked a Club/Superior room and were given Coleridge Room. It was bigger and very comfortable with a large bathroom and had a jacuzzi. If you book with the hotel direct, rather than through the Best Western website, you get a 10% discount, although you do have to pay for one night in advance. The service throughout our stay was excellent, and the gentleman on reception was very helpful. The breakfast was delicious, with plenty of choice.
This is a charming hotel in a delightful setting. We love Grasmere village. One night we ate in the Jumble Room just round the corner, The food was fantastic, tho not cheap! Would highly recommend it if you like a quirky atmosphere with wonderful food.
One warning......the car park isn't big enough, but if there are no spaces left, the manager either moves a staff car for you, or gives you a voucher to park across the road in the art gallery car park.
All in all, despite gales and rain, we had a lovely weekend.

  • Liked — Charming hotel in a delightful setting.
  • Disliked — Not enough car parking space, although reception did provide an alternative place to park.

Stayed in December 07 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Grasemere is a beautiful, quiet village.

The facilities of the hotel are excellent too, with heated pool and spa facilities, as well as a large residential lounge and a fantastic pub/bar attached to the hotel.

Only downside is that the room I booked was a little bit small, but, given the price, I couldn't have asked for more.
