Just returned from a lovely couple of nights stay which was combined with a walking holiday on the nearby fells. Hotel has a fab location for walkers and when we returned from our rather wet walk the receptionist gave us directions to a small drying room to dry our things, which was very welcoming. The room was lovely and the bed was huge, and although the bathroom was on the small side, it was new and modern. We ate in the the Lamb Inn, which is part of the Hotel. The meal was so nice that we ate in there on the second night too. I could highly recommend the steak pie and the lamb Henry! Breakfast was lovely. The breakfast room was very busy, but we didn't have to wait long for ours. Parking is limited but we were lucky and got a place no problem. Would definitely stay again.

Weekend away with family and dog. Struggled to find a parking space because there are not enough spaces for all guests to park. Room was ok but tired looking and the conservatory carpet looked very shabby. Hotel looks as though it needs a thorough refurbishment. Breakfast was totally inadequate with tiny portions that were poorly cooked. Took the dog at an additional cost of £20 but the breakfast was so small I couldn't even smuggle her a sausage or a bit of bacon. wouldn't go back.

We arrived on Friday afternoon. Booked in. Receptionist was quite curt. Room 306 views were great. Bathroom was not definitely needs decorating. We had the evening meal, food was ok but not particularly hot. Felt very rushed...4 courses in less than 30 minutes. Coffee in the lounge, empty glasses, coffee pots, cups still on tables when we retired at 11pm....wouldn't mind but it wasn't busy. Breakfast was ok,again not very hot. Another quite rushed evening meal...but it was hotter this time. Breakfast on the Sunday was again ok, but this time we had rain coming in through the roof on the table next to us. Staff didn't seem bothered about this and left it set as for use but then had to tell customers that there was a leak.....bucket on table to collect the rain! When we checked out we were given the wrong bill and were not even asked about our stay. May return but not in a rush!!!

We booked a dinner , bed and breakfast stay with a dog for 2 nights and were certainly not disappointed. We were initially booked into a smaller double room at the front, which although nicely situated, was not really suitable for our larger dog. After asking at reception we were moved straight away to another larger twin and more suitable room. We felt that the back of the property was much quieter too. Our room was quiet and it was the first time we have ever stayed at a bigger hotel when we have had an undisturbed night. The food on both nights and breakfast was exceptional and definitely worth paying the dinner bed and breakfast package. Nothing was too much trouble. We had trouble with using the laundry facilities on the 2nd day and the cleaner could tell we were struggling and came to our aid straight away. The facilities such as the swimming pool were clean and perfect for an after mountain walking treat. What we liked the most however, was the fact that we did not use the car for the entire stay. We are the type of tourists who like to explore but felt that there was so much on our doorstep such as shops, cafés and walks, that we did not need to go further afield. An evening glass of wine in the conservatory with our dog topped our nights off, yet did not ruin the atmosphere for other non pet owners who were undisturbed in the lounge area.

Room Tip: Parking is a bit tricky, but if you area aware of this you can plan accordingly. Anyway, you don'...

We stayed at the Red Lion as part of a trip to Grasmere for a wedding. We'd been given a reduced price as part of our friends' wedding package.

On arrival, the member of staff at the desk gave us our keycard plus the information regarding what was happening and when with the wedding. Hadn't expected that but it was very welcome. Our room was very comfortable, with a separate sitting area, TWO (yes two) TVs, and a nice bathroom. There were bathrobes, slippers and toiletries as well.

There was a buffet supper laid on for wedding guests which was a mixture of hot and cold foods plus some desserts. All the ones we tried were really tasty.

The main wedding events and food happened at a different place so can't comment on them here.

Breakfast at the Red Lion covers everything you could ever want first thing in the morning. Hot, cold, sweet, savoury - you name it, it was there. Portions of ordered food were ample and well cooked. The buffet was well stocked with all manner of cereals and cold food, both sweet and savoury. Preserves were of the individual portion pack variety but plenty of variety. Several fruit juices too.

We would definitely come back here in the future, especially as we discovered they allow dogs as well - we have two.

Stayed here for 1 night in July 2013. We had arrived quite early and as we very tired we asked if we could check in to our room early. The very helpful staff at reception arranged for our room to be cleaned first so we could. Very busy hotel with walkers and visitors but staff were on hand to help. Very relaxing lounge area. We took advantage of the pool. Only downside with hotel was the steps down to the pool area need sorted. slippery and tiles broken.
Apart from that the hotel was very clean and comfy. We had a meal at the lambs inn when was very busy, but meal was lovely.
parking is very limited at the hotel but if you ring ahead they will reserve you a spot if available
