“Brilliant location”
Reviewed 28 February 2014

We very much enjoyed our three night stay at the Red Lion this week. The location is lovely in the centre of Grasmere. We found a parking space, otherwise you need to ask reception for help. The restaurant food was so good we ate there every night. There was a different menu every night with a good choice and the restaurant staff were very friendly. We were planning to eat in the Lamb Inn on the last afternoon as the food looked really good but the rain was so heavy we set off home early. We had a drink there every day though, good selection of beers. The day before we walked on Helm Crag in gale, rain and hale with our boots filled with water. We did not ask about a drying room but a previous reviewer mentioned that there was a drying room.
Breakfast is excellent, with fresh fruit, yogurts, ham etc and whatever one wants from the grill. We ask everywhere for 'well done' food.
The lounge is comfortable and with a good atmosphere so any faults in carpets or furnishing goes unnoticed.

I gave it a rating of 4 because my first impression was not good. I had to decline the first room offered but luckily we were offered another which was OK. The carpet did not reach the wall which was a real shame as it spoiled the otherwise good room.

I felt that if we paid the normal rate I would have been disappointed with a room not yet refurbished but the rate we paid through Travel Zoo made it excellent value and we would like to return, despite the almost constant rain - with our waterproof socks inside our waterproof boots next time.

Shabby but not chic!

Too many stains. Super Uncomfortable bed. Too small.
All decor very dated and dusty and old. Ripped seats.
Dingy.
Tiny bathroom.
Brisk service.
No Wi-fi
Would not recommend or go back - ever.

Enjoyed a wet but restful break at the Red Lion in Grasmere.
The reception staff were brisk and efficient and our room had a view up towards Allendale House.
The room was pleasantly furnished but a little too warm for our taste.
We opted for the restaurant dinner both nights and were most impressed with the presentation, quality and flavours of the food. The service was efficient and quicker than anticipated. We also enjoyed the breakfast with the local bacon grilled to perfection.
Overall the hotel appears a little tired and in need of some TLC but this did not undermine the pleasure of staying in this delightful area.

Room Tip: Parking is a problem here with only limited spaces for guests vehicles.

Just returned from a lovely couple of nights stay which was combined with a walking holiday on the nearby fells. Hotel has a fab location for walkers and when we returned from our rather wet walk the receptionist gave us directions to a small drying room to dry our things, which was very welcoming. The room was lovely and the bed was huge, and although the bathroom was on the small side, it was new and modern. We ate in the the Lamb Inn, which is part of the Hotel. The meal was so nice that we ate in there on the second night too. I could highly recommend the steak pie and the lamb Henry! Breakfast was lovely. The breakfast room was very busy, but we didn't have to wait long for ours. Parking is limited but we were lucky and got a place no problem. Would definitely stay again.

Weekend away with family and dog. Struggled to find a parking space because there are not enough spaces for all guests to park. Room was ok but tired looking and the conservatory carpet looked very shabby. Hotel looks as though it needs a thorough refurbishment. Breakfast was totally inadequate with tiny portions that were poorly cooked. Took the dog at an additional cost of £20 but the breakfast was so small I couldn't even smuggle her a sausage or a bit of bacon. wouldn't go back.

We arrived on Friday afternoon. Booked in. Receptionist was quite curt. Room 306 views were great. Bathroom was not definitely needs decorating. We had the evening meal, food was ok but not particularly hot. Felt very rushed...4 courses in less than 30 minutes. Coffee in the lounge, empty glasses, coffee pots, cups still on tables when we retired at 11pm....wouldn't mind but it wasn't busy. Breakfast was ok,again not very hot. Another quite rushed evening meal...but it was hotter this time. Breakfast on the Sunday was again ok, but this time we had rain coming in through the roof on the table next to us. Staff didn't seem bothered about this and left it set as for use but then had to tell customers that there was a leak.....bucket on table to collect the rain! When we checked out we were given the wrong bill and were not even asked about our stay. May return but not in a rush!!!
