Great hotel right in the centre of Grasmere. The only drawback is lack of parking - a common problem in Lakeland villages. However there's a public car park 3 minutes away.

The hotel is fine good food in the main restaurant and more than adequate bar food in the adjoining Lamb Inn. The food is cooked in the same kitchen, so no compromise on quality. We had the baked sole in the Lamb it was large and excellent value for money. The next night we had duck in the main restaurant and although we wanted it cooked differently, they got it spot on for taste for both of us.

Bedroom most comfortable and en suite most acceptable.
Staff were excellent at their job, a pleasure to stay there.

We stayed here for two nights and found it a very friendly, relaxed hotel. Following a speedy check-in at 3 pm, we were unpacked and walking around the lake half an hour later on a beautiful, calm and sunny afternoon. Returned two hours later for an excellent, powerful shower, with instant hot water, and the room was cosy with controllable heating both in the bathroom and the bedroom. We had a corner room on the second floor with three windows, views of the fells, including Allan Bank, and we could people watch too. We dined in the adjacent Lamb Inn, the food was filling and good value (though the 5 course set menu in the hotel restaurant did sound tempting). The hotel has lots of comfy sofas and easy chairs, and a newly refurbished conservatory (painted and carpeted whilst we were there). Grasmere gets quite busy with tourists so the Red Lion is a good place to escape and relax.

We have just returned from a 3 day stay at the Red Lion.
Super warm welcome by the reception staff. All the staff we came into contact with were friendly attentive and helpful.
Our room was a standard room. Which we had no complaint with, tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits, flat screen television, two armchairs, big bath and shower, hair dryer and comfortable bed and plenty of storage space. And spotlessly clean.
Overall the hotel does look a little tired in places. But this didn't undermine the wonderful atmosphere and pleasure of staying at the Red Lion. The decorators were in while we were there which we were told was the start of an extensive refurbishment.
We dined in the restaurant and was impressed with the choice, presentation, quality and flavours of the food. With a different menu every night. It was a credit to the chef and his staff. ( We wish it was a bit nearer home).
The breakfast was every bit as good with a large menu from fresh fruit, cereals, meats, cheese, yogurts, kippers etc. to a full English with any variation you wanted which meant a slight wait as they were all cooked individually, but well worth the wait. What a lovely change from those awful buffet breakfasts.
The hotel is in a great location right in the centre of Grasmere. Plenty of good walks start from here. And if it is too wet to walk there is always the hourly bus service north or south and they do have a drying room if you get back too wet.
This was the first time we have stayed at the Red Lion but it won't be the last. We just hope the new owner doesn't make too many changes to the staff or to the way it is run. As the present system is brilliant.

I have visited the lakes on several occasions but although I have visited Grasmere previously, I have never stayed here. I had heard good reviews regarding the Red Lion so decided to give it a try. The reception had a warm welcoming feel to it and we were checked in quickly and efficiently. The room we had, had an amazing view at the back of the hotel overlooking the fells. The furniture is a bit dated and old and the carpet was joined together . The grouting in the bathroom could do with being tidied up a bit and is in need of a lick of paint but it was cosy and warm, with ample hot water, a Jacuzzi bath and something not to be put of by. I actually liked the friendliness and décor of the hotel. We decided to eat both nights of our stay in the restaurant. I found this really good value and the food was outstanding with excellent customer service. There was a good wine list to choose from. The hotel is dog friendly but is careful to ensure that the dogs do not bother or cause a nuisance to other people staying without animals. The only thing that did get on my nerves slightly was a piano that had a piano duke box attached and at times I would have preferred some more chilled out background songs but as there is ample seating, you do not have to sit too close. Breakfast had an excellent choice from fresh fruit salad, to pastries and a full cooked which was cooked to the preference each diner had. Although we never used the leisure facilities there was a really nice swimming pool if you prefer to chill and stay inside. I will be visiting the lakes again this year and will certainly look again at staying at the Red Lion.

Room Tip: get a rooms overlooking the fells as a lovely view.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the feedback.

I must agree regarding the piano with you. We do have back ground music also in the lounge. It’s great to hear you enjoyed your stay so much.

With regards to decorating etc with have had a team in the last few weeks working through all the issues 'if it’s broke, we'll fix it'.

Thanks again and we all hope to see you again soon!

We stayed for a lovely 2 nights last weekend on a great deal with Travel Zoo. This is a 3 star hotel and didnt expect it to be great but it far exceeded our expectations. We were immediately made to feel welcome by the very helpful staff. The lounge area was very welcoming and yes things are a little worn but that just added to the charm, anyone who expects everything to be brand new should pay more and go elsewhere. Our bedroom and bathroom could have done with an upgrade but it was large clean and comfortable. We ate in the restaurant on Saturday night and it was exceptional, four beautiful courses for £20 and the staff were lovely. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice. The pool was great and the hotel location was perfect. My only warning would be that the free parking is limited at the hotel but there is a large pay and display at the nearby garden centre. I believe the hotel has recently been purchased and I really hope they don't make too many changes.....lovely hotel and would stay again

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have lovely mountain views

Stayed at Red Lion for 2 nights last weekend, booked partly because of the really good deal on Travel Zoo. Had a great weekend, yes the hotel is a bit dated but it was very clean and pleasant. The staff are all very friendly. The food in the restaurant was excellent and very good value for money. Would definitely return.
