Just spent Easter at the Red Lion Grasmere.... What a difference to our last stay...The place has had a face lift!!! We had Room 211 which has been re-vamped with the biggest bed i have ever seen !!!! More than a Super King Size... Sheets were whiter than white and the whole room had been tastefully decorated... Bathroom very pleasing on the eye apart from the fact there is no Expelair.. You have to open the window!!!
My Parents had Room 215 which is a Twin Room with a Lounge Area.. Very pleasant with a view up to the house on Allan Bank..
Entertainment was laid on Saturday night and all in all it made for a very pleasant Easter Bank holiday break Well Done The Red Lion

Room Tip: Room 211 with the massive Bed or Room 215 if you want the Lounge area with 2 telly's

2 night stay from 18th April.
Don't let the extremely over the top picky reviews put you off.
First impression of the hotel - fantastic! I knew there were limited parking spaces before we got there as it does state on the website for the hotel, I went to reception to ask where the nearest car park was as I am a blue badge holder and could do with something close by, the manager who overheard me asking offered straight away to move his car, no questions asked and wouldn't take no for an answer, that's what you call service and this continued throughout our stay. Check in was seamless considering how busy they were and staff lovely and friendly.
The location - who could ask for more, right in the centre of the village and overlooking the village and views of the hills, perfect.
Food - breakfast was delicious, plenty of choice and the cooked breakfast was lovely. Dinner was even better, 5 course fine dining at a very reasonable price, again plenty to choose from and sooo tasty :)
Service - well what can I say, the staff in this hotel just can't do enough for you. They actively go out of their way to make sure your every need is catered for! Zoltan in the Courtyard Restaurant deserves special mention, he is very attentive without being overbearing and a lovely person too, so polite!
The only downside of this hotel is it is dated and in need of some TLC and is overpriced based on the room quality alone as we have stayed in other hotels, of a similar price but a lot better quality. Our room unfortunately was over the back of the kitchen and we had the kitchen smells, but we made light of it and we were there to enjoy ourselves, not let little things spoil our time away. Hotel rooms are usually a base, not where you spend all of your time.
Would we return, yes! They have everything spot on, just need a refurb to match the quality of the hotel with everything else.

Room Tip: A room at the front of the hotel with a view of the central village would be great.

We were booked in here to stay Thursday 17th April 2014 for two nights. We had a an initial problem of parking which took up far too much time of our short holiday. We did try and cancel the booking at this time as we realised that we would always have the same problems if we moved out of the space to travel during the day but we were quoted policy by the nice Gentleman Adam on the reception and they would have taken £140 to cancel.
When we eventually got in to our room we were horrified at the overall condition of the room. There was a distinct smell of dampness all over the hotel which was disguised by an incense burner on the reception. In our room it was so obvious that it had not been properly cleaned or serviced for a long while. The bed did though appear to have clean bedding. The valance around the bed looked as though it had been on for months and had never been ironed. At the right hand side the valance seemed to have been pulled over to disguise the fact that the side of the bed was coming away from the bottom and again looked as though it had been like this for a while but housekeeping were trying to hide it. As for the dirt and dust under the bed the hotel should be ashamed of themselves. There was a two inch band of dust, dog and human hair and crumbs all around the carpet around the filthy skirting around the room. The housekeeping staff obviously only run the vacuum in the main floor areas. The fascia going around the door for about two feet from the bottom was in a disgraceful condition and had not been maintained or repaired in goodness knows how long with huge chunks out of it and the paint and dirt was unacceptable for a 4 star hotel at £140 per night. The windows had a nice outlook over a courtyard at the back of the hotel but the window frames themselves which spread out on to the ledges were absolutely covered in a thick layer of black fungus that again housekeeping had obviously not attempted to clean for several months. The upholstery on the furnishings were dirty and terribly soiled and the TV screen had not been cleaned. The chair in the room had been carefully placed to hide a big hole in the carpet.
Moving in to the bathroom we were appalled to see the amount of filthy black mildew all over the room. The floor was dirty and had hairs on it and all around the skirting was dirty as well as having cracks where dirt had accumulated. All around the bath and the shower screen was again covered in black mildew which had obviously been growing there for a very long time. The actual taps were disgusting and again at the back of them were covered in black mildew. At the bottom of the bath where it is boxed in the surface was filthy. It had hair and black dust and dirt which looked as though it had been there for a long time. The wall was separated from this boxed in area and was absolutely filthy. Above this we were left a little notice to advise us 'sorry the spa bath is no longer in use'. Under the toilet well I wont even go there but please just use your imagination. On The wash hand basin you could not even see the white silicone as it too was covered in black mildew. The shaver point was so old and worn most of the writing was illegible.
We would say that this is the worst accommodation we have ever been offered. This used to be a beautiful high end hotel but the Management of it now obviously have no standards and expect guest to accept and put up with this. On the website it shows lovely photographs but they must be very dated as this hotel is. They also say their rooms are refurbished but ours certainly was not.

I would advise any would be guests to think twice and look carefully at all the reviews on this site as there must be two types of accommodation at the same price in this hotel. We cannot comment on any of the other services in this hotel as we certainly were not going to stay or sleep in a room that was so disgusting. Be careful too of dates of reviews as some of them are very old when the hotel would have been in its prime.
When we had the problem initially with the parking we did ask to speak to the manager but there were none available. The nice young gentleman on the reception did try and get the Bar Manager to speak with us but we are still waiting. Later on again we asked for the manager but there was none available and the two gentlemen on the reception by now told us they could not make decisions but could only follow policy.
We did take many photographs of the condition of this room and we shall try and post them but it looks as though only good photographs are published. I am very happy to share these with anyone who wishes them.

These are obviously our opinions and standards and it is up to yourself if you would find them acceptable but for !140 per night in Grasmere you can get accommodation which have impeccable standards.

Stayed for 4 nights from 14th to 18th April. We are arrived early but were told our room was ready and we had a free upgrade .The room was quite large we had a sitting area alongside the window .We had dressing gowns , slippers and bottled water in our room too. The restaurant was lovely and served you delicious breakfasts .The evening meal was a bargain at £20 per head for a 5 course meal and it was beautiful .All the staff were very friendly and I must say the staff in the restaurant could not do enough for you .The hotel is in a great position in grasmere and we were lucky to have a wonderful view from our bedroom window .This is a lovely hotel with very delightful staff and I hope to return in the near future .
