“Lovely surprise!”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

After letting our friend (who is not in the habit of booking good hotels) go ahead with the arrangements for our one-night stay in the Lake District en route to the Yorkshire Dales, we arrived in Grasmere after a picturesque car journey past Lake Windermere and were very pleasantly surprised by his choice. The hotel is set in a lovely, quaint village with many interesting shops and tea rooms. The reception staff soon had us checked in and on our way to our rooms which were clean and tidy with lovely views over the meadow. We had booked a table in the restaurant and were served by the most helpful of waiters by the name of Zoltan, who was very attentive and friendly. We had a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, which was included in the price, followed by a wander around the village in beautiful sunshine. We gave our friend a pat on the back for finding us this gem!

We have just returned from a 2 day break at this Hotel set in a beautiful village. We had a really nice large bedroom with sitting area, a huge picture window with stunning views. We ate in the Hotel restaurant on the first evening and had the most lovely meal served by very friendly and pleasant staff. The second night we ate in the Pub attached to the hotel and once more we were treated to a really nice tasty meal. This was followed by coffee served in the hotel lounge area with big comfortable sofas and chairs. the hotel has a small pool and spa which we enjoyed after our day out. Thank you to the staff and management for your friendly attention

We were invited by friends who know the area well for a long weekend. What can I say, a stunning area with lovely walks. The hotel's only failing is the lack of parking, but we knew that as our friends had been before, & the reception staff recommended parking off site if needed.
For a 3 star it is a lovely hotel with excellent leisure facilities, we made good use of the pool, sauna etc. The food is excellent, my husband likes his steaks very well done which most chef's hate doing & he usually has to send it back at least once. However the Chef got it spot on first time & apparently it was the best he had ever had! Thjere are lovely lounge areas which were never full so there was always somewhere comfortable to sit after dinner.
The staff too were friendly without being "in your face".
Thank you for a lovely stay.

We've just got home after a lovely few days at the red lion and I just wanted to thank you and your staff for your great hospitality.
We thoroughly enjoyed the evenings sitting in the conservatory relaxing with a drink and found all the staff delightful friendly and helpful. It's clear that you are leading a great team and have customer service that you should be very proud of.We are very much looking forward to our next visit to the lakes and will certainly be checking into the red lion again soon! Thank you!

We have just returned from a 4 night break at the Red Lion Hotel and have to say it was as good or better than more expensive hotels we have stayed at. The room, although small, was well appointed, clean and modern with a very nice bathroom. The hotel itself was clean and smart and right in the middle of Grasmere with views all round of the countryside. The food was excellent and, as we had pre-booked the 4 (or is it 5) course dinner, was great value for money and, for once, (because the menu changed each night) we had the choice of different dishes each day! The staff were all very friendly, helpful and approachable with a sense of humour. The only down side (if there is one) is the lack of parking space but, to be honest, we always found a parking spot when other didn't so it didn't spoil our vacation. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a break in the lake District!

Just returned from Grasmere and having read previous negative reviews of the Red Lion I can see some truth in them eg WiFi, parking and tatty areas. My wife and I enjoyed our stay and agree we would go again and hope the few issues that need sorting will be sorted.
A word of warning with hot water in your room, its either boiling or cold.
Good luck with the future Red Lion and see you soob
