“Quiet retreat”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

We stayed in the small, peaceful village of Grasmere for an early Spring walking break. There are lots of coaches and trippers during the day but, come the evening, peace reigns. The hotel is central (it takes up one aspect of the village centre) and the room was comfortable with a small balcony overlooking rooftops and the glorious hills beyond. Good public seating areas. We tried to eat in on first evening, but left after overhearing from two nearby tables that food was cold and had been sent back. Several good eating places round the corner, though, with a warm welcome and real ale. The indoor pool was a disaster. Changing room cold and draughty, and chilly water. The hotel was popular with older couples and no one else was daft enough to attempt a swim.

Stayed again this time with friends the first day on the wine, dine and unwind package, the other three nights just on BB, but dined in Lamb inn, a enjoyable stay especially for our border collie, Food was really good, service good, by the young lads in Lamb inn very polite, restaurant staff provided good service, as did reception house keeping etc, we also stayed on new year which was excellent and a seriously considering coming back this new year, We have stayed at Red Lion about 7 or 8 times now and the manager seems to be getting things just right, some areas are a little tatty in places but you can see this is improving all the time and refurb work is on going. Well done all at the Red keep the hard work going its paying dividends.

Room Tip: Corner rooms with two or three windows are nice and sunny, plenty of light and airy, especially idea...

We have visited this hotel many times and always have excellent service. The staff are very friendly and efficient. Food is good and served promptly. Rooms are very clean and comfortable. The village is an excellent base for those wishing to walk the fells but also for those who want to explore other areas of the Lakes.

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary, and when I mentioned it during the booking process we were upgraded at no charge.
The 4 course plus coffee "table d' hote" dinner was excellent. We both had the venison which cooked perfectly and was very tender 10/10.
The room was lovely with a box of complimentary chocolates and the staff were very helpful and courteous 10/10 for customer service!
The only criticism was that there was not much hot water when I showered before breakfast the next morning, but it was 09:00 and a lot of the guests were probably up earlier to get out on the fells.
Unfortunately we did not use the spa so we cannot rate it.

Room Tip: When booking use the telephone and let the staff know if you are there for a celebration/special occ...

Dear Ged,

We are so pleased to hear that you both enjoyed your Wedding Anniversary stay with us here, and hope that you can join us again on many more special occasions to come in the future! We will be sure to pass on the great feedback on to our chefs for the 10/10 food, and all other staff who made your stay so memorable.
We have taken on board your problems with the hot water, our apologies!

Hotel coped with large number of cyclists very well. Provided early breakfast and no problems. Rooms comfortable with good facilities and no problems at all.

location on the centre of Grasmere is good and would certainly suit those not using a car.
