The Red Lion is ideally situated in the heart of Grasmere and an ideal base for exploring the village. I was in a party of 16 and we paid £280 for 2 nights with one including evening meal. A little over priced for what you get.

Parking is available although limited.

The staff are extremely helpful and the manager is very hands on and also friendly. The overall decor is dated and the hotel is in need of a complete makeover like yesterday.

Leisure facilities are ok - the pool is probably the highlight... as for the exercise machines and weights... well i could probably count whats available on one hand. Very few machines in a very small space.

The bedrooms are typically standard of a hotel, nothing sparkling, curtains, carpets and betting need a transformation. The jacuzzi baths do make up for what the rooms lack in style. Its a bit of a squeeze for two in a bath job !!

The bar prices are reasonable and the food is very good for the star rating of the hotel.Pheasant was particularly nice. Beware though when we were drinking in the hotel bar on the first night it remained open until we had finished; however the second night we ate out and upon returning to the hotel at 11.15pm we found that the bar had closed and would not reopen. NO NIGHT PORTER FACILITIES EITHER. The manager was tracked down who did provide us with one round of drinks (at normal price)... but that was it for our Saturday night holiday.. Midnight and the hotel was virtually closed down for the evening. The Lamb Inn next door was also closed............ Sticking to the old out of date licencing hours to the letter of the law :(

Overall the company I was with made the holiday.. not the hotel.....dont think I will be returning...........

Stayed at the Red Lion for 2 nights over a weekend as part of a friends Birthday party.

For £280 we booked 2 nights DBB on the 1st night and BB the other.

The hotel is situated directly in the centre of Grasmere and this is an excellent base to explore. Grasmere itself has some good shops and cafe bars but Ambleside or Windermere are more busier of an evening.

The staff are very polite and the booking in was swift.

The rooms are fine in size but are in need of a refurb asap. I appreciate the hotel is traditional and authentic but a breath of fresh wallpaper, curtains and carpets are required to be more up to date.

The bathrooms are small and over lit. Dont get me wrong we all need to see in the mirror but its either full on floodlit stadium lighting or nothing at all. Not good to burn your retinas for the 4am pee!!!
The jacuzzi is a sweetner though!

A big plus point to the hotel is the food. Excellent! The dinner was superb. Local pheasant was outstanding. the wine list is well stocked and for a hotel the prices are reasonable. A big well done to the chef and team.

The pool and jacuzzi is good but has too much chlorine. Most of us stunk for days!

Be aware though that although we stayed up til 1am on the Friday at the bar no probs.... as we ate out of the hotel on the Saturday and returned to have a nightcap at 11.15HRS the bar was CLOSED!!!!!!

Fortunately we caught the duty manager on his way out and he was very accomodating and allowed us 1 set of drinks.. Be aware the RESIDENTS BAR RULE HAS NOT REACHED GRASMERE YET!!
That does go for the Lamb Inn next door as well.

A summing up of a basic hotel with average rooms in an excellent location with superb food. An improvement on the rooms would mean i would return. Otherwise I would try somewhere else.

I stayed in the Red Lion Hotel for 5 nights in August 2008. The hotel enjoys an excellant location in the centre of the village. There is a free carpark at the hotel but spaces are limited but they can offer you alternative parking at the art gallery just across the road. The public areas of the hotel are pleasant.

My room was situated at the back of the hotel and looked into the pool and therefore didnt have any great view of the fells. The room was of a good size and was clean.

Breakfast were nice each morning with a good choice. I only ate one evening in the Lamb Inn and the food was good with a really good atmosphere. It is a pity that the dining room has no windows to offer the lovely views around Grasmere.

An enjoyable stay but in places the hotel could do with upgrading in places.

Grasmere itself is a typical english village and is very quiet. If you are looking for a bigger selection of things to do and shops then you are probably best staying in Ambleside. A visit to the Sarah Nelson Ginger Bread shop is a must as well as the nice walk along the river on a pleasant evening.

Just returned home after spending two nights at the Red Lion, Grasmere. My partner and I booked a double room on a b+b basis for two nights with Superbreak.com for £215.00. Compared to other hotels within Grasmere village this seemed like a good deal.

The hotel has both positives and negatives. Upon arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a friendly and courteous receptionist who checked us in quickly and efficiently.

The reception area and lounge is welcoming and comfortable and has a nice bar area with plenty of sofas to relax in. Attached to the hotel is a public bar which serves bar meals. The style of the hotel is not trendy and modern, more olde worlde charm.

We stayed in Room 121 on the first floor. It was a standard room situated at the rear of the hotel with a view of the hills. To be honest, the room was a little disappointing as it was a bit on the shabby side. The wallpaper was torn in parts, the decor dated and the bathroom small. The bed and pillows were not the most comfortable and the heat in the room was somewhat unbearable. Air conditioning would greatly improve the comfort of the room.

However, the room was clean and tidy and the bedding and towels were spotless.

The hotel has a pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and small gym. We used the pool on both days. It didn't appear to be popular and at most we were joined by another couple. The pool was clean and really well maintained. The pool area also had a jacuzzi.

We didn't take dinner in the hotel as there are many places to eat within the village, however we did have breakfast. The usual buffet items were available and a really good choice of cooked items which arrived very quickly. Overall, an excellent breakfast served by helpful and friendly staff.

Car parking is available at the hotel and is free for guests, which is fantastic. If you plan to just stay in and around Grasmere then you can park the car and forget about it until you leave.

Grasmere itself is a lovely village surrounded by hills and a beautiful lake. There are plenty of places to eat and of course Wordsworth's house and the famous Gingerbread shop. We ate at Sara's bistro on the first night, which we would highly recommend. We wanted to try The Jumble Room the following night, but unfortunately, it was fully booked.

Overall, The Red Lion hotel is OK. There are a lot of places to stay within the village and if I were to return to Grasmere I think I would try one of the other hotels.
