Over the years we have tried several hotels in the Lake District for short breaks, beginning with the Red Lion back in 1973. So it was with a bit of deja vu, we chose the Red Lion for a one night break during the recent hot weather in the Lakes. Not much has changed. It is a village centre hotel with all the usual services but it is an old building and a bit like a rabbit warren upstairs. The lounge, bar and conservatory are set out nicely and the staff very obliging. The dinner menu was a bit too haute cuisine for us and we opted for a more ordinary meal across the road in the Ash Grove Hotel, although the bar menu in the Lamb Inn, part of the Red Lion, looked inviting. The traditional breakfast was fine. The only downside was the bedroom. The bathroom was fine but the beds! I've slept on softer pavements. The pillows in our twin room were like blocks of wood and the wardrobe looked like something out of the 1950s. Come on Best Western, spend some money on decent bedroom furniture and you've got a highly competitive hotel as it is in the centre of all the village attractions and deserves better. If you like a traditional hotel, this is it but there are drawbacks. No air conditioning, of course, but how often do you need that in the Lakes. We just opened the window wide. Parking is at a premium and hard to find after 3pm but there is a free overnight car park down the road.

Room Tip: Ask for room with a balcony and test the beds before you accept the room.

Spent a couple of days at the Red Lion. Great location for all the Central Fells and what a lovely central place in the middle of Grasmere. Friendly and helpful staff, good facilities, top notch breakfast, quiet bedroom ... and after a day on the high fells what a great way to relax in the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi pool.

Room Tip: Most rooms will have great views of the local fells. We looked north towards Easedale - lovely.

Nice hotel and location but eating in Restaurant for 7 nights is unexciting and expensive, menu has only 5 rotations, and therefore repeats after 5 days, also some menu's have duplicates from previous nights therefore not even 5 true menu rotations, food of good quality and cooked well however vegetables of same variety every night, sweet menu and vegetarian menu's do not change nightly so choice lacking over 7 day stay. Many restaurant staff of foreign decent and suffer from poor training & communication skills. Have stayed in far better Best Western hotels with excellent Restaurants previously. Needs a good refresh of menu / head chef quality restaurant staff. Rest of hotel and staff very good, but overall poor value for money restaurant.
Good location for touring Cumbria & lakes.

Room Tip: Older building with some rooms bigger than others so lots of variety and therefore best to check roo...

Have been coming to this hotel for 25 years. Have always been happy with the friendly staff and the hotels amenities, which have increased over the years. Food has always been excellent. The hotel has just changed hands and I understand the new owner is to do some refurbishment where required. As ever enjoyed my stay this year and shall be returning next year. Parking can be a problem but there are car parks and spaces close by if unable to use the hotel car park. Overall a very comfortable and relaxing holiday in an excellent hotel.

Booked this late Friday night as fancied doing something different for the weekend, arrived Sat lunchtime and what a gem, right in the middle of Grasmere. Food was excellent, rooms very comfortable and we made full use of the facilities, swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Staff were all really friendly and the location was just brilliant.

Just returned from another pleasant stay at the red lion. The room we had this time was a bit tatty and in comparison to our previous stays was a little disappointing. At £150 per night b&b I would like to see a better standard of decor. I understand the process of refurb but feel that maybe rooms that are past their best should carry a lower rate. Everything else was lovely. Thank you!
