“We haven't been disappointed on our last few visits & weren't disappointed on this one either”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2009

We have stayed at the Red Lion Hotel on a few occasions and so far haven't been disappointed. We reserved a club room (Ruskin) which was 'massive' and looked as though it had been refurbished recently, although possibly by a 'manic depressive' as not exactly colour coordinated. However, it was spotlessly clean and maybe added to the eccentricity of the theme. As usual, we found the staff to be very pleasant , courteous and helpful. The meals were excellent and although going dinner/breakfast is a little restrictive, the food never disappoints and the wine very reasonably priced for a hotel.
The only real criticism (previously mentioned by an earlier reviewer), is that the bar shuts quite early.
Would we go to the red Lion Hotel again ?, Yes most definitely.

Whilst commanding a superb location in Grasmere, this is a very average hotel and there is nothing exceptional about it. The room we had was quite large but it was very shabby around the edges so I can only assume its one of the rooms that hasnt been refurbished? The bed was so small that after spending 2 nights trying to lie on your side, we were both exhausted. The bathroom was very small without a window but on a positivie note it had a great big jacuzzi bath big enough for two which was brilliant after a day on the fells.

Breakfast was very disappointing where the staff were rude and unhelpful and when breakfast arrived itself, it really wasnt worth the wait. Its served on very small plates and was mainly overcooked which might have been from the temperature of the plates - they were ridiculously hot! I thought the supplement of £7.50 to have smoked salmon was a bit extortionate too.

Reception called us on both evenings to ask if we had made a reservation in the restaurant and if we hadnt, did we want to which was very annoying. If we wanted to make a reservation we would have done and they always called whislt we were having a nap after our long walks.

We sampled the ale in the Lamb which is a typical pub adjoined to the hotel and its good to see that its improved. The staff are a credit to the hotel as they are always smiling and friendly. We did stuggle to get a seat on each visit as it was packed to the rafters but on our last night we decided to eat in the pub. Unfortunately my gammon steak was overcooked and dried out but that pub grub and we didnt pay the earth for it.

This hotel is really geared up for the elder generation and therefore the service, staff and facilities reflect this. If you are in your thirties, you have been warned! (This does not relate to the pub!)

I think that my husband ,myself and 6 other friends must have been to another Red Lion in Grasmere ! .As some of the comments made in other reviews are not a reflection of the hotel we stayed in .The food in the restaurant was excellent, the lounge and conservatory area was comfortable .The rooms if anything were too warm .the spa bath was lovely after a day out walking, rooms were clean and cosy ,the decor was perhaps not to our taste but that is a small thing. The staff could not have been more friendly or helpful (even to 8 senior citizens who managed to get confused over their bills!)
In fact it was a wonderful few days which we hope to repeat in the future

Attractive building and welcoming reception area, staff helpful and informative.
Rooms in need of a make over, dated faux Ashley patterns and some rather worn fabrics.
Eccentric light switch configuration, which lent a disco feel to things.
The bathroom was small but adequate, however some guidance on the operation of the shower would have been useful .TV picture and reception good, a couple of radio stations would be useful for the insomniac
The quality of food in the restaurant was excellent, and the breakfast well cooked and plentiful. I did book in for next week as I am visiting the area again.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and had a standard double room , yes the beds are a little on the small side and the hotel a little dated in parts but you can forgive this given the location of the hotel , right in the middle of a beautiful little village. Staff at the hotel were a colouful mixture but our service was good throughout our stay.

We visited the Lamb Inn which was linked to the hotel ( so you dont even have to put your coat on - great in cold weather !!) The hospitality and food/service in the pub was fantastic, the staff work as a real team and seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs which is a rare find !! We ate here every night and even enjoyed late night toast which the barman made for us especially over the open fire with a toasting fork - had he been there on our last night we would have bought some marshmallows for him to add to his repertoir !!

Lovely break with our friends, lovely food and good hotel in a fantastic loaction.

  • Liked — Friendliness of staff and location were brilliant.
  • Disliked — Nothing,

Been going for 20years- changed hands recently and is now tired, poorly managed and staffed by bored, disinterested kids. Go over the road - or anywhere else.

Another fabulous stay in Grasmere. This time we were joined by 14 other members of our family for a surprise party for Paul! The hotel kept the secret very well for us, and were great about the balloons, cake and other bits and bobs we brought with us!We visit this hotel regularly and always enjoy our stays. The rooms are warm and comfortable, loads of hot water and excellent food, both in the restaurant or the Lamb Inn if you are looking for a cheaper alternative. The Westmorland Club offers great value for money, especially out of season. It is not the poshest hotel you will stay in, but it has a lovely atmosphere and nice that they allow dogs for a small fee. Can't wait to go back!
