“Beautiful top quality hotel, friendly and completely relaxing”
Reviewed 15 May 2011

My wife and I were looking for a relaxing short break with my 21 year old son for some much needed quality family time where we'd enjoy good food, service and surroundings with easy access to the stunning outdoors of the Lakes.
I found Rothay Garden Hotel by Googling 'Luxury Hotels in the Lake District' and from the start was impressed by the friendly response when I called to enquire on availability. We booked at very short notice for reasons beyond our control so my wife and I took the Silver Howe Suite and my son had one of the Grasmere double rooms, complete with 6ft KIng bed!

The Rothay Garden is located a five minute walk up the road from Grasmere village towards the Keswick road, with beautiful views on all sides and plenty of parking at the front secluded from the road.

First impressions of the building upon arrival were very good with the cleverly designed atrium/reception area that keeps the character of the original Victorian country house while also feeling ultra contemporary and premium.

Reception staff were welcoming and friendly and escorted us to our rooms explaining the features and mealtimes etc as we went. I should mention also that due to our late booking and no single room availability, we were kindly offered a more attractive rate for my son's single occupancy of the large double room.
This room was beautiful, richly decorated with crimsons and pale golds, a substantial bathroom housing a large feature bath with shower. This was an excellent start but our suite exceeded expectations. Silver Howe is beautifully decorated in plums and burgundys, greens and golds, it has what turned out to be an amazingly comfortable bed, a beautiful bathroom with walk in double shower room and separate feature bath. This may be sounding like a design review but then I am a designer by profession and I really appreciated the attention to detail and quality of the decor. There is a separate seating area with sumptuous settee, two flat screen TV's (one in the bedroom) and lovely colour co coordinated beamed ceiling.
So first impressions were pretty exceptional all round and the detail touches like free wifi (no we weren’t working but this was useful for catching up on ‘The Apprentice’ on i player !), air con, bottled water and chocolates, quality tea making kit and organic bathroom products just kept on coming.
The bar is equally contemporary and sumptuous and just encourages you to relax into the ambience of the place. Some top quality venues can put you on edge, making you feel as though it’s your job to step up to an imposed standard. Not the case here, the staff are friendly and discreet so they don’t impose but are always there when you need them. i.e you don’t get hassled by housekeeping if you don’t leave your room till late in the morning- How many times in a large chain hotel have you had a knock at the door and the ‘housekeeping?’ call when you just want to chill? They should know you are still in your room and that’s how it works at Rothay. This was the kind of break we wanted, leisurely paced.
We booked the dinner, bed and breakfast basis for our three-night stay and the dining experience was superb. This is fine dining make no mistake, but again in an accessible appealing way. Meals appear like works of art and are completely delicious but don’t think these are tiny ‘nouvele cuisine’ portions, they are substantial and we never managed to do justice to all five courses on offer with pre starter soup and post dessert cheeseboard…maybe next time!
The desserts are just amazing and the wine list is extensive.
I’d read that the chef has substantial London experience including the Savoy and this translates not only into gorgeous food but also fast turnaround, the service is very efficient and consistently friendly.
The dinner menu features three elements, a table d’hôte that changes each day, a ‘bistro’ menu that remains constant and a vegetarian offer. It’s possible to mix and match across all three which we did.
The breakfast menu is equally extensive, delicious and customisable, superb.
The boss was regularly in attendance throughout our stay and always attentive to ensure our comfort, a nice genuine touch consistent with the ethos of Rothay Garden.
At first glance you may think the tariff is not cheap but once you’ve experienced the quality, comfort and ambience of the hotel you realise its actually very good value.
A spa facility was nearing completion when we stayed and this will really round off the offering nicely.
Regrets? ..that we only had three days there, we’ll be back.

Room Tip: Silver Howe suite is beautiful

It's a true saying you only get what you pay for and unlike a lot of hotels this hotel delivers on all accounts. Stylish relaxing good food and great ambience all adds to the perfect stay. The hotel has under gone a lot of investment and is not yet complete, they are building a new state of the art spa and well being centre. This will complete the full package,I could go on and on about this hotel, but to conclude I can only recommend you stay and enjoy this gem in what is one of the best locations in the UK "grasmere"

Second stay at the Rothay Garden. Grasmere as a location is ideally central, fair to say the heart of the Lake District and so a great location to base yourself for going out and about. Good quality standard of accommodation deserving of a 4 star hotel rating. Only dissapointment on this occassion was some on going construction of a spar complex which meant the hotel garden was effectively a building site, great shame since the weather over the period of our stay was outstandingly hot and it would have been nice to have had somewhere to sit out, also not the greatest outlook having breakfast, watching them watching us in the conservatory dining area! Of course the associated noise with the contruction work didnt help matters. All in all an unavoidable set of circumstances if the improvements are to be done but had I known about the building work beforehand I might have booked elsewere on this occassion.

We stayed at the Rothay a few years ago and were very impressed in particularl with the food and service. Our stay this week end still had the very impressive food and service and is now coupled with some very impressive upgrade work to the rooms and to the soon to be finished new Conservatory restaurant and the new spa area.

We stayed in the Helm Crag Suite which was a really good sized room, huge bed, two lounge chairs (which I must admit could have been better) large bathroom with above bath TV, a shower with power!! plus all the usuals.

Is was very peaceful but why oh why do other guests insist on just letting their room doors bang scaring the living day lights out of you when you are sound asleep at 7:15 in the morning.

The food was once again of a very high standard. One criticism we had was that the plates they were served on were so hot that your meal continued to cook for a while after being served. My perfect venison ended up dry, my good scrambled eggs ended tough and dry. Minor point but did spoil things a bit.

It would have been handy if maps/descriptions of walks from the hotel were available in the rooms.

It would also be nice for the the flowers to be fresh and not plastic. That was a bit Fawlty Towers.

I reserve my main praise for the staff. Once again professional and courteous.

When can we go back!!!

Sadly we only stayed here one night, wish it could have been longer. We were upgraded to a large, beautiful and light filled room at the top floor of the inn. The cooked to order breakfast in the morning was devine. The inn is only a short walk from Grasmere village so quite convenient for shopping and dining. It appeared that there was some renovation going on but it did not disturb our stay at all. Super clean throughout with a pleasant staff.

planned a 2 night stay to celebrate birthday with husband and dog. On enquiring about availability were informed of ' one and only' offer of £82.50 per person per night including breakfast and evening meal. This is due to work in the hotel to provide spa and new dining room.
We had read previous reviews and were not disppointed. I had contacted hotel previously to check exactly what work was going on. We were given ground fllor roomby the river room 16. The room was a good size and pleasantly decorated just needs a touch up here and there. We had a sun room attached which was ideal for the dog. There was work going on directly opposite it started about 8.30 ended about 5pm, but we had not intended spending time in the room and so it did not bother us in the least.
plenty of towels and toiletries and wide selection of beverages provided.
Breakfasts were very good, wide variety and well cooked, didn'y manages the Hillwalkers, just the normal one. Dinner was superb. Five courses beautifully prepared and served. Staff very attentive but not obtrusive.
Hotel location good, short walk into centre. Very quiet.
Would certainly go again even at full price and looking forward to using spa facilities. I understand work complete about easter so offer available till then. certainly worth taking adavantage of.
