Very comfortable room (15), great sleep, small balcony overlooking the garden and the hills. First floor but not an issue. Hardly knew there was anyone else there when tucked up. Lucky that despite it being early November we had super sunshine. Made a mistake by not taking swimming stuff as free to guests Spa looked very inviting and relaxing after a day in the hills. Walkers very welcome. Restaurant was excellent and it should be with 2 AA rosettes. Choice of menus but the top one with 4 courses was £40. Not huge amounts on the plates as one might expect but of very high quality. A cheaper 2 course brasserie menu was also available at £30 which we did not try. Breakfasts also good. For some reason though poached eggs not served runny when we had them..
Staff all very pleasant. Would recommend this hotel
Grasmere is a nice little village - bought the requisite gingerbread from the wee shop in the corner.
Look out as Rothay is a river and we tried to book into the wrong hotel in Ambleside as many hotels share the word "Rothay".

My wife and I stayed here on 2 September. The room was fantastic and opened out onto the riverside. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant was very well cooked and presented. Staff excellent too. Cannot fault the place.

My wife and I recently had a weekend break at the Rothay Garden in Room 21. I understand that the hotel has benefited from a considerable amount spent on refurbishment in the recent past and judging by our room it was money wisely spent. The decor is modern but tasteful. The lounge is very pleasant while the restaurant is well appointed with attractive views over part of the hotel grounds. The food was was no more than OK for a 4 star establishment but the service was top class. The one aspect that was slightly disconcerting was the location of the kitchen, which is situated next to reception, so during meal times there is a constant steam of waiting-on staff walking through the reception area carrying trays of food to the restaurant! It wasn't quite Fawlty Towers but whoever designed the layout certainly had a vivid imagination.

Overall the experience was nice enough but £528 for 2 nights, albeit including dinner, was a bit steep. That said, Grasmere is a delightful village.

I'm thrilled, I've found a contemporary yet cosy hotel in the Lake District that you just don't want to leave! Rothay Garden has been beautifully decorated, with a lovely warm cosy bar and lounge, elegant restaurant, and stylish bedrooms. There is ample car parking spaces, and you may use the spa at no extra cost which is very unusual. Check in was swift, staff very professional at all times, and the quality of food and presentation was just to perfection. Every meal was heavenly, and we enjoyed our coffee and cakes which were served in the lounge after our meal.... oh and loved the roaring fire too! Breakfast was amazing, again faultless. From bed linen to bathroom towels, to hotel decoration, and excellent service...Rothay delivered on every level. Little touches go along way.. We appreciated the robes and slippers, toiletries and tasty tea, coffee and biscuits in our room - a real treat after a hearty walk in the Lakes. We've found our base, and chuffed to bits... We'll be back very soon.

Great place, we had the Helm Crag room. Fab view. The food was really good, Grasmere doesnt have a lot to offer late evening most people seem to eat early or eat in their hotel. Hotel was really close to village, and staff were great, as was the spa. And the chocolates.... mmmm
