“Lovely decor, shame about the restaurant”
Reviewed 29 December 2011

This was our second visit in six months and I have to say we were disappointed. On the plus side, the decor is well done and the bedrooms are luxurious though the bathrooms are badly lit. Spa is excellent and relaxing.

There are many negative aspects however.

The service was exactly as on the previous visit, cold but efficient.

The food was not as enjoyable as on our previous stay, even the quality of the ingredients was not as high.

The menu sounded excellent but the 'pre-starter' - a tiny cup of lukewarm soup - was considered one of the four courses. The sous chef cannot cook potatoes - every evening they were hard and tepid. Fish was not of the quality expected in a two AA rosette restaurant. Desserts were a huge medley of far too much sweetness. No delicacy in presentation though the cheese board was good.

Breakfast was also not outstanding - the kipper fillets were salty and cheap...I could have bought better at my local supermarket! The scrambled eggs were presented floating in liquid in a large white soup bowl and surrounded by smoked salmon. Most unappetising. The kedgeree was good.

Such a pity that we won't return to the Rothay Gardens even though we like Grasmere very much indeed.

My husband and I were gifted a boutique weekend at the Rothay Garden Hotel which included a nights stay,a 4 course meal and breakfast.

Whist our room was lovely, 'OK but not great' largely sums up our experience for the following reasons;

- Service was efficient and perfunctory but lacked warmth
- Being a foodie I was excited by the menu, but the actual food we had (whilst OK) lacked depth, variety of flavour and a sense of 'freshness'

It is important to note that we did not use the spa facilities so this review does not address this element of the hotel facilities.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Rothay Gardens for a birthday treat in November.

The hotel has lovely grounds when you arrive and we were speedily checked in by a friendly lady on the front desk.

We had booked one of standard rooms which was nicely decorated and perfectly adequate in size. We just had to be careful of the sloping ceiling at one part of the room - so not to bang our heads. The bed was very comfy and there were robes and slippers to use, and there was also a lovely hospitality tray with biscuits, teas, coffees etc - plus a caffetierre as well as a kettle. The only thing about the room we had to complain about was a noisy fan which went off in the middle of the night - but we soon managed to find the switch to turn it off at the mains.

After settling in we took a trip down to the gorgeous spa which conveniently was empty apart from us. The spa has big glass windows so is perfect for relaxing gaxing out at the countryside. There is no swimming pool, but a lovely big jacuzzi, sauna, aromatherapy room, tropical water jet cubicles and loungers.

We had dinner reservations for 8pm in the hotel and decided to head to the bar a little early for drinks. They had a lovely cocktail menu, and I sampled a couple but they were rather pricey - £7-£10 each. While we we sitting, one of the barmen brought round some homemade cheese biscuits which was a nice touch.

We had a lovely meal in the restaurant - both of us enjoying all courses. We had a 4 course meal included in a DBB deal. Although we actually ended up with 5. I would have to say the highlights of our meal were probably the pork dish my boyfriend had for his main, and the pistachio souffle with chocolate sauce that I had for dessert - absolutely devine! We then retired back to the lounge/bar for coffee and petit fours that were all gorgeous.

Breakfast at the hotel was also excellent - I had real trouble trying to decide what to order from all of the lovely choices on offer.

All in all, this was a lovely hotel with excellent service and yummy food. Would recommend to anyone.

We had a riverside suite and it was fantastic. The staff were all very friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. The food was fine dining at its best - probably the best hotel restaurant food we've ever eaten. The spa looked fabulous, though we'd not brought our gear and so couldn't partake. We've already recommended the hotel to friends, and look forward to going again ourselves, hopefully when the weather is a bit less inclement! It didn't spoil our enjoyment of the stay, and the provision of a drying room was a welcome facility. Really a superb place to stay!

Room Tip: Ask for a suite.

I love visiting The Lake District and I would not stay anywhere else but Rothay Garden. I have stayed there 3 times now and each time I have not been disappointed. The food, the rooms, the beautiful outdoor areas. The Spa and the public indoor areas are all to be enjoyed. I am looking forward to another visit in April with my daughter this time for a relaxing break.

Room Tip: Riverside rooms are at the back overlooking the river and away from the road.

We stayed in one of the Loft Suites for two nights and it was the best hotel we have stayed in! The staff were all very friendly and the food was to a very high standard. We will definately recommend the Rothay Garden Hotel to all our friends & family!

Room Tip: Cannot compare to other rooms in the hotel, but the suites in the loft are definately worth every pe...

We stayed for our 15th Wedding Anniversary - without the children ! - yippee. Wonderful hotel, lovely staff, excellent food. The Riverside Spa was very relaxing. We have been visiting the Lakes for 22 years and just love it. Perfect for unwinding. We are hoping to book again for 2012.
