My wife and I stayed at the Rothay Garden last weekend. It was a last minute decision that turned out to be a good one! At this time of year Grasmere was quiet, and the peaceful surroundings helped us relax and get ready for the hectic week ahead.

The hotel looks like a typical Lakeland property when you arrive, but has been well refurbished and is modern and stylish inside. Our room was very spacious, well fitted out and had a balcony overlooking the river. Everything was clean and tidy. We didn't fancy the 5 course Restaurant dinner, and the food on offer in the bar area was disappointing (the lack of choice makes you feel like you're being forced into the restaurant). As a result we wandered into the village for our meal.

Breakfast was good, without being particularly special. Service was excellent.

We left feeling refreshed and in good spirits. Worth another visit in 2014!

Room Tip: The Riverside rooms with a balcony onto the river are excellent.

We spent 4 days in the Lakes. 2d in Bowness and chose 2d in Rothay Garden. We booked a suite via Secret Escapes and on arrival were given room 6. It was so small we queried wether it was or wasn't a suite and were given assurance that it was. It is the only room in the place that doesn't have the word 'suite' on the room plaque.......for obvious reasons in my opinion.
They had the chance to change us since they had a spare room but didn't bother.
The mouldy shower had duck tape holding down some sort of bund presumably to stop the bedroom flooding and people are able to walk closely past the bedroom window.
Can't fault the food or the staff apart from the duty manageress(??) who had an opportunity to change an opinion but didn't bother.....

This was our first stay at The Rothay garden hotel. We were booked for a 2 night stay in a Riverside suite overlooking the river.
The room was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Breakfast and dinner was simply delicious. Staff most courteous and helpful. The spa was very well laid out and luxurious! It gave a welcome warmth to those aching muscles after a day out walking.
We will most certainly be back!

Room Tip: Riverside suite has lovely views across fields and river and is close to spa on ground floor.

Stopped here for two nights last weekend on a package. We had a Grasmere Garden room which overlooked the restaurant roof but the distant view was great. Big room, well furnished with good sized bathroom. Both dinners and breakfasts were superb, I thought quite a good choice for the dinner and reasonable portions of meat, smallish potato portion; as with all these types of restaurants they rely on you eating all the courses to be full, but full we were at the end of the meal. Bar and lounge were cosy. Did an hour in the spa on the Saturday evening before dinner; done to a very high quality and very relaxing.

Only downside of the weekend was that I made the basic mistake of not checking the heating in the room on the first night we we were both roasting and the towel heater in the bathroom was cavitating like mad, learnt the second night and a much better nights sleep. As someone else has said not all the sash windows open, two of ours did the other pair did not.

We will definitely return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Check the radiators before going to bed rooms can be warm

We spent 3 excellent nights at this lovely hotel. Everything was as good as we remembered from our previous 2 or 3 visits. Service and food are always excellent. We stayed in a langdale room overlooking the garden ( we had previously stayed in rooms overlooking the river) and it was just as nice as expected, even although it wasn't weather to enjoy the little balcony attached to our room.
I had intended to try the spa ( which was being built the last time we were there) but forgot my swimming costume - perhaps the best excuse yet for wanting to go back!
