On arriving in the spacious car park we were greeted in reception with a friendly, quick and efficient check in with all the relevant details told to us, offered to be helped with our bags whilst shown to our room, in the eves of the building, now, after reading a couple of reviews about these rooms being too small, grow up, they have everything you need, quality furnishings and a spotless room that puts premier inn cleanliness to shame..... All the touches of quality from a cafe t'aire to named bottled water etc, bathroom you could have a party in, it's that big and modern and has beautiful touches to it, ie. the toiletries... The restaurant is immaculate and amazing gastro food... Recommended the pork belly, oh my god!! As part of the 4 course menu.... Wine, a little expensive, £22 for a bottle of Pinot, but it was a good one, and it is Grasmere! It is in the Lakes, not a bad compromise!! The Spa with the views of the surrounding fells, the river running literally right outside the window...cleanliness, attention to detail, made our stay..... I'm not even going on to breakfast which was as good as the evening meal.....Highly recommended...we are going back in the summer when the rain might well be falling straight down instead of horizontal!!! All adds to the unique charm of this great part of our country!

We stayed for one night having booked through Living Social on a DBB basis.
This hotel is superbly located. Just a 5 minute walk into the beautiful village of Grasmere. Our room (18) exceeded expectations, there was a balcony overlooking the garden & another larger balcony overlooking the river. It was clean & spacious with a seating area, tea & coffee making facilities & a bottle of water. The wifi worked perfectly in the room but was a little hit & miss in the public areas. My only gripe would be the bed, which although huge, was rather on the firm side!
Turning to the food, the dinner was fantastic, served with just the right amount of time between courses, followed by tea & petit fours in the lounge. Breakfast was equally superb the following morning, a good & varied selection.
We used the Spa, & although quite small, it was not busy & we felt completely relaxed.
We spoke to a number of couples who were returning guests & I can see why as we will definitely be going back to this beautiful hotel!

My husband had received a 'Red Letter Day' voucher for £200, so we paid an additional £30 to go to the Rothay for one night on a DB&B basis. (We thought we'd have a reccie as we're looking for a hotel for 3 couples for a long weekend in October, with spa etc, so thought this would be perfect!) One of the benefits of RLD is a free room upgrade when available, so we looked forward to that possibility!
On arrival, everything was fine - checked in ok and were helped up with our luggage to our room (no 26). We were in the eves of the roof and the room was tiny, with a small double bed and not enough room to swing a cat! We telephoned down to see if we could have a different room but were told we couldnt. I checked there and then online to see if there was any availability and there was - several rooms!! My husband and I are both quite tall (6 ft 2 and 5 ft 9) and we both banged our head on the beams and walls during our stay, to the point where it just wasnt funny anymore.
We were, however, looking forward to dinner as I'd read numerous fabulous reviews. We were seated on a table directly next to a couple with just a railing in between, who were midway through a heated argument and kept looking at us with much disdain. I asked the waiter when presented with the menus if we could sit at the table next to us in the window, but was told that was for the people who'd sat there the previous night!! We eventually got moved to a far nicer table with so much more room.
Staffwise, the one chap who checked us in then served us in the restaurant was very pleasant, but everyone else was downright miserable. No smiles, small talk or pleasantries. There also seemed to be a lot of young staff and nobody in charge? I still have no idea who the restaurant manager was (even if there was one at all?) We ordered a bottle of prosecco, but were told there wasn't any left, but we could have the next one on the list for the same price!! (£25)
Dinner was ok, but a let down as I expected it to be far nicer, especially for the price quoted on the menu (£40).
We then had coffee and petit fours in the lounge, which was soulless and had absolutely no atmosphere, so we retired for the evening.
We didnt realise at the time of checking in but our room was directly above the kitchen, so we heard the clean down, the moving of the bottles, the loading / unloading of the dishwashers, clattering of plates and the staff conversations until quite late. The bed was far too small for us and had 'rolltogether' so every time my husband moved, I did too. Duvet was nice but far too small and we were both cold.
We were both woken up at 6.45am by the dulcet tones of the kitchen staff setting up for breakfast, as well as deliveries happening directly under our room.
Breakfast was much nicer than the dinner (hence the 2 stars, not 1) - freshly cooked crispy bacon, great bread / toast and fresh fruit.
Overall, very disappointed, especially as we had a potter about Grasmere and were very impressed. Very sadly will not returning with our friends to the Rothay this October and will be looking for somewhere else - thinking of trying the Gilpin or the Rampsbeck.

Room Tip: if you get room 26 CHANGE IT!!

An excellent hotel in every way. We stayed for one night only in the Helm Crag room and were very impressed at the quality of everything, from the welcoming chocolates and tea and coffee facilities to the beautiful comfortable bed with views across the mountains. The sound of the river in full flow below the window with even binoculars to watch the wildlife, it was a simple but brilliant touch which made us realise how much thought was put into making our stay so comfortable. We had a fantastic meal in the restaurant in the evening, with excellent service. We will certainly be returning again in the future.

My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful stay at this hotel. We have not stayed here before but love Grasmere so were pleased when I saw this hotel on a deal through Living Social. As I hadn't been here before I don't know whether we could've justified the full tariff but having now stayed it's definitely worth it and feel very happy to have found this hotel.
We have stayed in many lovely hotels but this was one of the best in terms of service and welcome. The hotel itself is lovely, in a good location, the spa is small and perfectly formed but the service is excellent.
I would like think we would return for special occasions. Hopefully it can be our regular child free escape!

On recommendation we booked one nights stay at Rothay Garden. Usually at weekends you have to stay a min of 2 nights, however they will allow the one if the hotel is not fully booked. We arrived Saturday afternoon to a wonderful hotel surrounded by snow capped mountains! Beautiful!..... We opted for dinner, bed and breakfast and were placed in room 10 - a Grasmere Room. Total price for the two of us was £264! When we walked in to our room, first impressions were good until i sat on the bed and immediately clocked my eyes on numerous suspicious stains on the throw....it was disgusting! I took a shower later on and again i wasn't overly impressed with the cleanliness. There was mildew in between the tiles and where the shower screen met the bath, it was really manky!

Hair dryer was from the 1970s and stopped working after 20 seconds...had to send the hubby downstairs for another. The concierge brought me a hairdryer from another room. I can only assume it came from a more superior room as it was top quality!

We rocked up at the restaurant which was very nicely decorated and on 2 levels. Our booking was for 9pm so the restaurant was quiet and there were many free tables looking out on to the gardens. They sat us down on the inside at a table which was directly below another table and when i could hear every single word the other couple were saying we immediately asked to be moved. It was like sitting on a table of 4 but on 2 levels. I kid you not i could have touched the other couples legs as they were literally an inch away from us. We didn't like that at all. The impression we got was each room has its own allocated table as the next morning we were sat at the same one again. The actual food and service in the restaurant was very impressive and I would definitely opt for dinner if staying again. Breakfast was equally as good, as was the attentive service.

The Spa is beautiful and spotlessly clean. Heated stone beds and fabulous jacuzzi and sauna! I would highly recommend using these facilites if staying!

After a long day, we finally called it a night and got in to bed. The duvet and pillows were top quality but for us the mattress was far too hard. Neither of us were having a good sleep and then the central heating pipe noises kicked in early hours....it wasn't great!

I mentioned the cleanliness of the room upon check out and they were very apologetic.

To conclude, the hotel is tastefully decorated, clean (apart from our room) and is in a superb location... We would definitely go back to Rothay again, but not if paying full price. Also we would book a more superior room as I believe the better the room, the better the amenities, ie hairdryer and the better the table location in the restaurant!

Room Tip: Don't stay in Room 10. The bed is uncomfortable, the central heating is noisy and the view is r...

We stayed here around this time last year - in the snow! - and liked it so much that we decided to stay again. We found that standards had been fully maintained.
We had a Riverside Suite with sliding patio doors that opened onto a small patio on the banks of the River Rothay. The room contained a king sized bed, wall mounted TV, tea & coffee station along with a number of seats. The bathroom had a bath and separate shower. White towelling robes and slippers were also available for use in the room or spa. There was also a small complimentary selection of chocolates provided.
We are walkers and upon returning from a days walk in the rain, we used the spa. I loved the heated beds that were utterly relaxing. We both enjoyed a nap.
The bar area is roomy and has a lovely living flame fire in the centre of the room. There was a good selection of local bottled ales and an extensive wine list.
What can we say about the food??? Excellent! Superb! Neither seem to do justice to the wonderful meals we enjoyed.
We would definitely recommend the Rothay Garden.
