Me husband and I have just stayed here for our anniversary. Although it was quite expensive it was certainly worth it. All the staff from the receptionists to the maids were very helpful, friendly and gave a five star service. We stayed in the stone arthur suit at the top of the hotel, the room was a really good size, light and airy with a huge bed which was extremely comfy, a big bath behind the bed and a good size shower in the bathroom. The food was faultless and absolutely delicious, top ingredients cooked to perfection with plenty of choice, complements to the chef! The spa was beautiful too with gorgous views of the river and hills or the gardens to relax and look at. The only thing I will say against the hotel is something another reviewer picked up on, in the restaurant the music was extremely quiet, I could just about make it out, I dont like really loud music when eating but making it a little louder wouldve made it less awkward and the same for the bar area. All in all though a fantastic hotel and highly recommended!

We had a ground floor room with doors onto a small connecting terrace area adjacent to the Rothay river. Room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The large ensuite had a good shower but no bath. There is a separate spa which we didn't use. Staff were all very polite and helpful. Breakfast was excellent with a good range to chose from with views over the gardens. You may want to reserve a table by the window. We also had a room service meal which was also excellent although pricy. We were doing the coast to coast and the hotel has a drying room which was good for drying clothes and boots. A very enjoyable stay.

It's our fourth visit to the Rothay & we are very fussy, so it must be good! I wish they didn't charge ridiculous prices for booze (£4.15 for an Old Peculiar) I suppose it deters the 'riff-raff'!

Also, if you say you provide 'Wi-Fi', please provide Wi-Fi' (100%) I am so please I didn't need to do any work during our/my stay...

Booked a 2 day Anniversary stay at the Rothay during April. We stayed in a suite overlooking the river. The rooms are very tastefully decorated some having better views than others. The food here is absolute heaven, the chef and his team produce amazing meals with locally sourced produce. The staff are very helpful and courteous nothing is too much trouble.
Make no mistake this hotel has got it right catering for guests who just want to take things easy. The Spa is very exquisite and the views of the garden and river are delightful.
You may look around the Lake District as I did and wonder where to stay. The Rothay is a 'must stay here' hotel. Chris and his team have got everything just right. I would love to hear a little 'Chill out' music be it aromatherapy or classical in the background whilst enjoying the evening meal/breakfast.....

Room Tip: Pay the extra and book a suite.....

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the hotel for just one night over the easter holidays, and were both very pleased with out overall experience. As there was a problem with the room we booked, we were put into a slightly more expensive room for free, and it was everything you would expect from a 4 * hotel. Big bed, big bathroom, all the usual complementaries, TV, wardrobe and a little balcony overlooking the river. We used the spa, which was small but not bad, but didn't eat in the restaurant. Room service breakfast in the morning was large and very satisfactory. I would recommend the hotel for the service, cleanliness, relaxed atmosphere, privacy and location.

Room Tip: Our room was 24, and well suited to a couple staying for a night or two.

We recently has a three night sat at Rothay Garden for a much needed break and some fabulous walking. The location is great; away from the bustle of the centre of Grasmere, but within really easy walking distance.

The hotel has been completely modernised and all works have been done very well indeed. Our room was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The balcony overlooking the river was a lovely feature, and we left the French windows open at night, as the sound of the water was very relaxing. I would choose a different room next time, as ours was very dark. A good light over the wardrobe would help, as it was genuinely difficult to see what was in there, and nowhere was light enough for applying makeup!

The spa was a welcome feature. Although not very large, as precious reviewers have noted, it was never overly busy, so very relaxing, and sitting in the jacuzzi gazing up at the stunningly beautiful fells is a wonderful experience. I also had a reflexology treatment, which was lovely.

Dinner was excellent and an outstanding feature of our stay was the attention paid to giving me choice in my vegetarian meals. This really made a difference to me and was greatly appreciated. The food was delicious so that we never ventured out of the hotel for dinner. There is no a la carte menu, but plenty of choice and appropriate servings. The dining setting is in the conservatory, overlooking the pretty garden, which is lovely.

Breakfast was good, perhaps not as knock out as dinner. Plenty of choice though, lovely fresh fruit, and there was a veggie option that I felt compelled to try, though I did find aubergine and courgette a little strange first thing! Maybe there could be homemade hash browns, or Glamorgan sausages?

Service by reception staff was also superb. We found all the staff very friendly and helpful. Rothay garden is not cheap, but it is very good, and we had a wonderful recharging of the batteries. Fully intend going back.

Room Tip: Number 19 is very comfortable and quiet with a large balcony overlooking the river. It is, however...
