Just returned from a two night stay at what can only be described as a fabulous hotel, not cheap but well worth every penny, we were celebrating our golden wedding anniversary and a birthday, nothing was too much trouble, all the staff were delightful and more than helpful, food and service were first class, special compliments to the chef and Elliott the general manager. will definitely return wow

Room Tip: suites are the best, worth paying that little extra, ask for a ground floor suite

Fair to say that this hotel is not cheap to stay in but for that special night/weekend away it definitely has the wow factor.
Location is good as are the rooms and overall service from the friendly staff. The evening dinner in the restaurant was ok without being fantastic but the breakfast the next morning made up for it!
The little Spa at the rear of the building is a must even if you only go in there for 20 mins or so.
Towelling robes are provided in the rooms so quick change, sit in the whirlpool and look at the mountain scenery (through the rain) and you will forget all of your problems!!
All in all a pretty classy hotel

We stayed 3 nights at this beautiful small hotel and had a wonderful stay. We had a garden room which backed onto the creek....which turned into a proper river after the 1st night because it rained so much! But it was a great place to be holed up on a rainy weekend break. The rooms are spacious with quality linen, bathrobes and slippers and you are encouraged to walk around in your robe through the hotel to get to the spa: hot tub, sauna, warm reclining beds and an aromatherapy room. The spa gets busy around 4-sih in the afternoon so consider going earlier in the afternoon. The staff are friendly and genuine and happy to bring a cocktail to the veranda outside the pub. The hotel is located 5 minutes walk from Grasmere...which is more like a hamlet than a town but where there are a dozen cafes and decent postcards and a smattering of okay pubs. Rothay Garden hotel has a perfectly manicured garden which you can enjoy looking at from the breakfast and dining room....complete with at least 6 rabbits, apparently wild ones and even a red squirrel, the first I have ever seen. It's a hotel with trendy young couples and older couples. I didn't see one child or teenager there in 3 whole days. Do plan to have dinner at least one evening as it is great! I would consider coming again and will certainly recommend.

Room Tip: There are ground floor rooms with sliding doors to the communal garden and 1st floor rooms with litt...

We stayed here for two nights. The room was comfortable ,service good but food was disappointing on our first night much better on the second. This is not a cheap hotel so one would expect perfect service. I asked if the scallops were supposed to be cold and the waiter said that he would ask the chef. I am still waiting for the answer. The main course was cold too. On leaving we were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay.

The Rothay, is a fairly slick operation, and the restaurant is outstanding. Can any breakfast be better than the fell walkers breakfast? It is well situated very close to Grasmere and has a tidy little spa. The overall feeling is one of tranquility and in my view it has that little something which distinguishes it from other hotels of this type.

We spoke to another couple and they said that having had some poor experiences in the lakes with hotels that were not up to expectations, the Rothay was now their default hotel when visiting the lakes, and I am inclined to agree. We would have visited there last time but the Travelzoo offer was the same price as the previous offer, but for a room and not a suite. The suite was £40 extra which was quite an increase, and the reason we went to another hotel for our last visit.

I find it tiresome when one has to carry out an almost forensic examination of these offers to look for the trip wires and the some of the descriptions they use to describe their facilities are worthy of Wordsworth himself, and in many cases not deserved.

We will be visiting the Rothay again, hopefully when the offer is a little more attractive.

This hotel is not actually sited in Grasmere, but it is only a short distance upriver to the north of the village (presumably in Broadgate), with adequate car-parking provision and an immaculate south-facing garden.
Our room was on the first floor, overlooking the garden and had a roof terrace with table and chairs. The bathroom was a good size ; probably large enough to accommodate a separate, walk-in shower. (I am not a fan of the shower-in-the-bath set-up)
The room was also a good size with a large, comfortable bed and more than enough storage and also a few chairs.
Our stay was quiet and peaceful with no intrusive noise.
We were booked for a weekend break : two nights D,B&B. The breakfasts were excellent as were the dinners.
We didn't use the spa, but other guests seemed to enjoy the experience.
The Drying Room is worth special mention : after a typical and thorough Lakeland soaking, we were able to leave coats and shoes overnight, ready for use the following day. What a brilliant idea !
We found staff to be helpful and attentive, and we wouldn't hesitate to go back or to recommend to others. It's not cheap, but it's the Lake District, which is priceless.

Room Tip: First floor overlooking garden recommended.

I booked a 2 night Bed Breakfast and Evening Meal via an offer on Travelzoo. Although we had a long drive for 2 nights, it was absolutely worth it.

The staff were really friendly and more than accommodating. Our room had a balcony which overlooked the river at the back of the hotel. The room was comfortable, and modern with a hint of luxury.

The hotel is surrounded by some amazing scenery and is situated at the end of the Village of Grasmere.

The food was amazing, really good fine dining. Although with all fine dining portion sizes are small, with 4 courses in total we were full by the end of the meal. Breakfast was huge, with the choice of cereal, fruit, yoghurt etc followed by toast and pastries. You could then order from the menu a traditional Cumbrian breakfast, or as my husband managed the "Fell Walkers Grill". This was more than substantial!

The hotel has its own spa facility, which opens out on to the amazing gardens (as does the restaurant). The Aqua spa was lovely, especially after a long drive or a day out exploring.

It was not really a hotel I would suggest for families, more couples who want to explore the wonderful Lake District and combine it with a bit of luxury and romance.

I will definitely be returning, and cannot recommend it enough. Speaking to other guests whilst we were there, they also said how amazing the hotel was, and that they would also be returning.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to have balconies or gardens. Rooms at the rear of the hotel have balconies overlo...
