I have stayed at Grasmere before at the red lion which is just along the road and is also a good hotel, but The Rothay GArden is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in , anywhere in the world.
The room was spotless, the staff very very helpful and friendly and polite.
The food was absolutely fantastic, I will definately be returning to this wonderful place!

Rothay Garden Hotel, Grassmere.
January 16th 2009.
Trip Adviser Member, Cheshire, England.

We have stayed at this hotel for short winter breaks over many years, always enjoying the excellent food served in the Restaurant.

Last year the hotel closed to enable a total refurbishment resulting in a more modern and salubrious place to stay, now qualifying a Four Star rating.

The superb makeover has made the place an even better venue for the descerning Walkers who wish to explore the lovely countryside offered in the Lake District and return in the evening to luxury and superb food.

Not one to be missed !!

We last stayed at The Rothay Garden in July 2008 and are booked to pay a return visit in April 2009. This will be one of a number of return visits which must say something for what the hotel has to offer. Grasmere village is, for us, the jewel of the Lakes and the Rothay Garden has the potential to be the jewel in the crown of Grasmere hotels. Our last stay coincided with the final, but incomplete, stages of a £2m refurbishment and because of the unfinished work the hotel was not displayed to its full potential. The completed work was of a high standard and when fully complete will hopefully reward this significant investment. Our Langdale room was well appointed and very comfortable but a little smaller than we would have wished so our next stay will be in a Grasmere room. The staff are very courteous, helpful and ready to cater for all your needs but we would like to see a little more interaction with the guests if their duties would allow this. The meals have always been excellent with a choice to mix and match from two menus at dinner. The selection of wines to complement your meal is extensive and of reasonable value. Breakfast is more than adequate to cater for all requirements ranging from Fell walkers, wanting something to take them through their day, to sightseers who might want something lighter. There is no riotous night life at the hotel, except what you might make for yourself, but if you are looking for a very comfortable hotel with excellent meals and in an idyllic location then you should consider the Rothay Garden for your stay in the Lake District.

November marked the second time we had visited the Rothay Garden since its multi million pound 'make over' earlier in the year. We were more than satisfied: Our refurbished bedroom, which clearly had had a lot of money spent on it, was light and airy with a pleasant view of the garden. The cuisine and ambience in the restaurant stood favourable comparison with other establishments of a similar rating and the staff, led by the proprietor, Chris Carss, were as ever friendly and attentive. My Wife and I will be returning and writing this review serves to remind me to make a booking for a few days' re- visit later in the year.

Brilliant. We have stayed here for various "special" events so this year we said 'How about New Year?'. So we did!! And what a New Year it was!!!
The reception we received was great and sincere, as was the rest of our stay. The food met all our expectations, and more. The culinary expertise was, and is, second to none. When you can open a hotel kitchen door and be invited in you know that there is nothing to hide. The front of house staff are always friendly. I cannot imagine staying anywhere else in Grasmere, and we will not. Thanks all staff- that includes the chambermaids, who do an excellent job, at the Rothay Garden for making us very welcome.
We were so happy with the hotel that it is on our list for my special "70th" event. The people who have complained must be very sad people expecting everything for nothing. I cannot commend the Rothay Garden highly enough .

We stayed at this hotel on the night of the 29th of December. It is very beautiful and the rooms are gorgeous. One negative is that the halls are very echoey and you can hear every door opening and closing all night.

The only other small criticism is that although the staff were civil enough to the guests, there seemed to be no comraderie between themselves at all. Like they seemed slightly unhappy to be working there.

Lovely breakfast and the conservatory was so pretty. We would stay again.

The hotel has recently been refurbished and we were eager after visiting several times previously to see the results for ourselves..I can only say what a transformation, our room a Grasmere on the first floor was stylish and very comfortable with super views and the bathroom was first rate..Dinner and breakfast were of the usual high standard with everything cooked superbly to order..We were a party of ten on a weekend break and all the staff were very friendly and went out of their way to help and assist..I cannot really find anything negative to say about the Rothay Garden, our stay was exquisite from start to finish, we even experienced 2 sunny days without any rain (In mid November)..Would I recommend this hotel ' You bet I would'
