“three day relaxing stay”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

'We've just returned from a relaxing three nights stay at Lancrigg. Our room was very comfortable and the food was excellent. The hotel is situated in a wonderful quiet setting with pleasant views and there are numerous walks from the door. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, but unobtrusive. It was a lovely place to relax and unwind and we highly recommend it. '

Room Tip: Best views seem to be from rooms at the front of the hotel.

We arrived very late at approximately 11pm after being stuck on the m6 for 4 hours.
Upon arrival we met meera at reception who showed us to our room. She made us feel so welcome, she even made a sandwich for my wife! Amazing level of service. It was a joy to meet her she is wonderful and we wish her well with her pregnancy and hope to meet her again.
The rest of the staff were all amazing too they are like family!
Our room was wonderful, an excellent period property with so much history set in the most mind blowing surroundings. If you want to be blown away by views and enjoy peace and tranquility with no hussle and bustle then You need to stay here.
The walks through the lancrigg grounds are beautiful and are like something out of lord of the rings! a fairy tale . My 5 year old daughter, wife and I have now become fans of taking walks and hikes.
The mountains surrounding the hotel are indescribable, one afternoon we ventured off to climb one of the ascents and can truly say it was a meditative experience. I felt refreshed and calm.
The owner of the hotel was friendly and would regularly have chats and also came to see us in our room to say goodbye on our final day. A joy to meet him.
We are lacto- vegetarians and for the first time in 20 years have stayed at a hotel where we ate breakfast lunch and dinner! The food? well, until you visit this place and see what effort goes into making the food, attention to detail, consistency, freshness, flavour and variety.....you get the picture.
So my summary, if you want to get away from it all and want good nutritious food and friendly environment come here.

My husband and I have been coming here for several years now and have never once been diappointed by the quality of any food. We met up with two relations who were at the end of a stay in Windermere. On their last night we introduced them to Lancrigg's wonderful food. They are not frequent vegetarian eaters but really enjoyed the food and ate all three courses with great enjoyment, excited by the different tastes and textures. Our relations had to leave their appartment the next morning but we were lucky enough to stay at Lancrigg that evening. We chose different dishes and I can honestly say my main meal was even better than the first night and to complete the meal we chose chocolate desert. I am not a pudding lover but this was a desert I will always remember and hopefully have chance to eat again. I must add that we frequent this friendly, country hotel because of the friendliness, the helpfulness, the rooms, the warmth, the food (obviously!) and surrounding views and walks. The walk through the woods between the main building and the owners' house is delightful and we have stayed in the annex attached the house several times.

Room Tip: You can look at the rooms on the Lancrigg website. Most, but not all rooms have wonderful views. Roo...

Lancrigg is not just a hotel, in the sense of a place to sleep and eat. It has many historic, literary and scientific connections, with people like the Wordsworths, Dickens and Darwin. Despite the history aspect, it has been tastefully modernised, with all the expected conveniences, though in our room (“Easedale”), one needed a certain agility to use the bath/shower!

The location is superb, in the quiet side valley of Easedale. For hillwalkers, it has the attraction that one can enjoy many excellent excursions without the chore of driving and then finding somewhere to park; Helm Crag, Steel Fell, the Langdale Pikes and even Helvellyn are all within reach on foot.

I must, of course, mention the food. Although my wife and I are not vegetarians, we do often eat such meals at home, so it was very interesting and satisfying to try the menu here, cooked by the professionals. We sampled a fair range during our three day stay and found it all delicious, varied and beautifully presented. We never noticed the absence of meat!

The pleasure of our stay was greatly enhanced by the enthusiastic and very helpful staff – nothing was too much trouble for them.

One slight drawback, for a fell-walker, is the lack of a drying room (even the humble youth hostel down the road possesses such a facility). On one occasion, a helpful young lady took some wet trousers of mine to the tumble drier, but this would not really be practicable if a large number of guests had got thoroughly soaked on the fells, especially for their rucksacks and boots.

Overall, though, we feel it would be well worth staying there again.

Despite arriving late, the receptionist made us welcome and offered us refreshments. We were then shown to our room - not just given directions to it !
The rooms were clean, spacious, comfortable and well equiped with tea-making facilities and bathroom necessities.
The hotel was quite full but it was very quite and we enjoyed a good night's sleep.
The hotel is set amidst superb scenery and is well situated for some very good walks and climbs -we climbed Helm Cragg after breakfast!
The breakfast menu involved selecting one item from a number of interesting cereals and then another item from the cooked breakfast list. We chose the TLT - tofu, lettuce and tomato in a warm seeded roll. Toast and tea or coffee followed. The breakast staff were friendly and efficient.
We had a very enjoyable stay and would like to go back for longer.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front look out onto the valley - superb scenery.

If you aren’t a vegetarian and the name of the hotel sounds slightly off putting then I think you may be missing out and should look in more detail at what Lancrigg has to offer, bearing in mind that there are plenty of alternatives close by in the centre of Grasmere if the excellent food at Lancrigg still isn’t quite enough to satisfy.

To reach Lancrigg take the Easdale Road opposite the bookshop and follow it until you see the gate immediately after a sharp right bend. If using a sat nav you may find it wants to take you up a minor road a little before this that leads around behind the private hostel at Thorny Howe. Although this will get you there the road is slower, narrower and in its final stretch rather rough and unsurfaced.

Once through the gate you follow the winding drive through some of the 30 acres of grounds associated with the hotel to find parking immediately outside. There is a little additional parking just before the last gateway, certainly enough on each of the occasions we’ve visited.
The location of the hotel is little short of ideal. Close enough to the village for a drive hardly worth making or a short and pleasant walk a large part of which can be made on a nice track paralleling the road. It is also directly below Helm Crag, one of the best and most easily tackled ascents in the immediate area and directly accessible from paths running through the trees in the grounds. This in itself will take you up to the well know Lion and the Lamb and the ridge leading over to Gibsons Knott. For longer distance walkers it also makes a good starting point for other routes and you can follow the tops past Easdale Fell to reach the likes of Pavey Ark and Pike O’ Blisco if you’re so inclined. As if this were not enough, your room, may well overlook the hills on the other side of Easedale Beck, looking directly across the valley, a view also visible from the dining room, the lounge or the seats outside where you can relax on warm summer days; unless you wish to enjoy a game of croquet on the lawn below. Stepping across the road from the end of the drive brings you to a small footbridge over the beck on the other side of which you will find yourself on the path leading directly up to Easdale Tarn, a lovely spot for a picnic and one of the favourite local walks – how good can it get? Well if you don’t want to go so far you can relax in the grounds taking in the collection of exotic trees, including giant redwoods, to be found here. In fact if you’re looking for a Lake District hotel I would venture to suggest that Lancrigg occupies one of the best if not the best location and it certainly explains why the house was so admired by the likes of Wordsworth, Coleridge and Dickens among others.

So what of the hotel itself? We stayed in the Wordsworth Room at the front of the hotel and found it extremely comfortable. The double bed gave a great night’s sleep, the furnishing was tasteful, the en suite bathroom up to date, the place immaculately clean and the view wonderful. If I wanted to be picky I could say that a few odd patches of the wallpaper here and there could do with a little attention but this really would be picky and highlights how far you would have to go to find fault. The lounge downstairs couldn’t be more comfortable or a more pleasant place to relax with a great Lake District view outside and the dining room next door is spacious, comfortable and a very pleasant place to enjoy what I feel sure you will agree is a great meal. The food here is not only vegetarian, you will find this to be one of the most thoughtful hotels anywhere if you are vegan or have special dietary requirements such as gluten intolerance. There is genuine care here with as much wholly organic produce as possible being used. Even ordering a coke brings an organic soft drink rather than the mass produced variety we’re all familiar with. As to quality I can only comment on the meals we’ve eaten there and would have to say that having visited a vegetarian restaurant run by one well known celebrity chef we found the food at Lancrigg to be undeniably better. You don’t need to be a resident to sample it so if you find yourself in Grasmere and whether or not you are a vegetarian I would recommend you to think about trying it.

Although we haven’t sampled them it is apparently possible to obtain professional nutritional advice, obtain a variety of massages, enjoy shiatsu or reiki and on occasion even receive a cookery lesson here. There are periodic special offers available too.

The staff are friendly, professional, hard working and attentive, the owners genuinely care about what they are doing and don’t seem to see this as simply a business and you absolutely could not find a location better than this. We would not hesitate to recommend Lancrigg if you are looking for somewhere to eat or stay in the Grasmere area.

Room Tip: The view from the front of the hotel is worth choosing your room carefully.
