“Idiosyncratic comfort”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

Lancrigg offers all the idiosyncratic and faintly eccentric pleasures of a Victorian retreat in the Lake District -- bow windows, lace curtains, chandeliers, pot-plants, fires, miscellaneous framed watercolours and embroideries -- combined with all that is needful for the modern weary -- bookcases, sofas, games, massage, tea, good food and wine, and above all, profound peace and quiet. The views are spectacular, the walking is excellent, and the grounds are romantic, extensive, and packed with literary association. The staff will give you a flask of tea and a packed lunch for your day out, discuss maps, walks, and cater to any nutritional needs (we're omnivores, as it happens, but others are not). Supper is pleasant, peaceful, in subdued lighting, and timed to a slot of your choice. Other guests are typically blessedly quiet and discreet. The only thing I wanted extra was a hotwater bottle to fill up myself -- and only because I was cold and exhausted with travelling. Take a swimsuit if you want to take advantage of their arrangement with the local spa. Take a torch if you're going to be out in Grasmere village after dark.

Room Tip: Pay up for the view (ask -- and the website is helpful on this), it's what Lancrigg absolutely d...

We decided to book an anniversary weekend at Lancrigg primarily because of it being Vegetarian but also offering Vegan meals.

The team are extremely friendly and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and informal with more of a home from home feel. The setting is stunning with fabulous views and walks from the hotel itself.

We booked DBB so dined in the hotel restaurant where there was a wide choice available, the food is of a high standard but beware the portions are huge, pace yourself!

We intend to return again but next time will be having a maximum of 2 courses and fasting before we arrive.

We enjoyed a fabulous weekend in a stunning location at a wonderful hotel.

Lancrigg is just the place to spend a relaxing few days in the Lake District. Food is fantastic and the trouble taken to ensure special diets are catered for takes all the worry away about finding somewhere suitable to eat when you suffer from allergies.

Had a wonderful, relaxing long weekend at 'Lancrigg'. Its the ideal spot for getting away from a hectic reality. It leaves you feeling rejuvenated.
The service is excellent, rooms clean, beds comfortable and the poached eggs perfect each morning!

Had a great weekend. Hotel staff very helpful in suggesting places to walk / go during our long weekend. Food lovely. Location very nice too - close enough to Grasmere to quickly buy supplies in the morning but far enough away to feel secluded.

A lovely quiet location set in fantastic countryside of Grasmere. On arrival we were offered the choice of the other luxury room, which was a nice touch. All the staff were very helpful and provided an excellent service with a smile.
The food was of a very high standard and we both thoroughly enjoyed our evening meals, even the house wine was splendid. Again the staff were very attentive enquiring if our needs were being met.
I would absolutely recommend a stay but as the title reads, one night is definitely not enough to soak up the ambience of the Lancrigg

We spent our honeymoon here,my wife is vegetarian.22yrs on very little seems to have been done to update the place. The location is amazing, very beautiful. The room, whilst very spacious, was very disappointing!!.No central heating, storage radiators, they didn't come on.warm air blowers so your were either very hot or very soon quite cold. The bathroom was a very badly laid out shape. The bath was in an alcove which meant getting out was very tricky,oh, yet another very small warm air thing, half an hour was just about enough to slightly warm the room up,NO WINDOW in there either. The TV had only two channels that worked.Breakfast was very average. Most items in a meat free b.fast need to be cooked fresh, not kept warm. All in all we felt it was a mistake to revisit the place we had such fond memories of.
