This is a hotel with an ethos that really encourages guests to settle in, relax and take it easy while offering great access to hill walks and the countryside. Located in Grasmere it's very easy to get to all the locales that are free from masses of tourists doing the rounds. Food is excellent, the hotel is clean and quiet, and the staff are courteous and helpful.

We would readily recommend to anyone that wants a change from the formulaic and would appreciate a smaller hotel with real charm.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the larger rooms with seating and views over the hills.

We enjoyed a wonderful 4 days escape from the stresses of modern life. The hotel has a proud history and it is easy to imagine Wordsworth being inspired by the spectacular landscape. The view from our room was exquisite, the bed comfortable and spa bath invigorating. The food was delicious and we especially enjoyed the creative use of tofu and the very berry ice cream sundae. The hotel has a magical romanticism that sets it apart from other luxury hotels and justifies the high prices. We recommend it to anyone looking for a genuine country house experience but especially to vegetarians who will most appreciate the fine dining.

We are a family of five, a mature couple, with three young people aged 21,19 and 16. The hotel had a nice homely atmosphere. Amazing vegetarian food. Lovely woodland walks in the beautiful gardens. Rooms very comfortable and thoughtfully decorated. Friendly staff. Beautiful place. Perfect location for a relaxing (or active) holiday in the Lake District.

Room Tip: Rooms vary in size and bathroom facilities. Ask to see if there is a choice.

My parents offered to pay for a B&B weekend at the lakes as a birthday present for me. My partner and I were surprised to find a vegetarian hotel and immediately booked a room. We went up on a gorgeous weekend (June 7 &8) and were excited to find our hotel on top of a lovely windy road. Our room was nice and cute and consisted of two floors, one with a sitting room and bathroom and the other with a bedroom and bathroom! We had a nice time taking a stroll into town where we walked near sheep and spotted an owl perched and awaiting nightfall. Our dinner was excellent and we enjoyed the evening by taking a walk around the grounds and sitting outside on a bench. Breakfast in the morning was again great and filling. We checked out but kept our car there so we could take a walk down the poet's path and made up way up to the nearby waterfall. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. No complaints!

We've just got back from a weekend away at Lancrigg to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and we had a lovely time - despite heavy rain on our first day that tried to dampen the mood!

The hotel itself is set in gorgeous surroundings and the staff are all absolutely lovely and can't do enough for you. Upon arrival, we were shown to our room and treated to a complimentary pot of tea in the lounge which was much appreciated after a long drive through the pouring rain! Would it be cheeky of me to suggest perhaps the hotel could throw a couple of biscuits in with this? Perhaps it would! ;)

Our room (Nightingale) was very clean and well presented, however it felt like it needed a little TLC in places to bring it back to it's former glory.

Don't get me wrong, there was nothing about the room that would spoil your holiday, but a touch-up of paint here or there (like the gloss around the door that is a little chipped) would make the stay feel that bit 'extra special'. Also, the bedside cabinets were a little cheap-looking (a birch veneer flatpack Ikea jobby) and not really in keeping with the rest of the room - again it's a minor point as there's not very much wrong at all here!

The light-switch for the bathroom has been placed in a curious position behind where the door opens, meaning we repeatedly opened and closed the door to turn the light on at first, but we got used to it and it kind of added to the charm of the place!

There was no toilet-roll holder in our room, meaning we had the toilet roll propped up on the towel rail which was less than ideal. There was a fitting on the wall where a toilet-roll holder had once been - I imagine this has broken recently and a replacement is on its way.

Apart from the obvious (the location), one of the best things about the hotel is the food - it really is tasty! The Tofu "Fish and Chips" is my favourite and I also had the mushroom roulade which was divine. The price of the dinner menu is very reasonable compared to other restaurants/hotels in the area and my non-veggie wife enjoyed the food as much as any other 'meaty' place she's been. Service is not the quickest, but everything is cooked fresh and we really enjoyed the opportunity to savour dinner, rather than the 'all 3 courses down and out within the hour' fayre you tend to get in many restaurants!

My only slight criticism is that perhaps there could be a little more choice - particularly with the starters (only 3 options, plus the soup when we visited). I imagine if we had stayed for more than a couple of nights, it would be tricky to find a dish we really enjoyed without repeating something we'd had previously. Maybe rotating a couple of dishes from one night to the next would be a good idea, or perhaps a 'specials' board with a different starter/main option from one night to the next? Having said all that, as a vegi, there was still much more choice than I would usually have at a restaurant, so I probably shouldn't complain!

Breakfast is a three-course affair (if you want it) and it's a real treat! I recommend the muesli, yoghurt and fruit to start, followed by the full english and then some toast and jam.... yum! On the second day, I tried the fruit compote topped with yoghurt and desiccated coconut to start. This turned out to not quite be to my taste and, noticing I hadn't eaten much, the waiter offered me an alternative 'starter'. I declined this, but it shows just how much the hotel is prepared to do for you!

If you visit Lancrigg you're sure of a warm welcome, beautiful scenery and a fabulous time. Your room may feel slightly tired in places, but it will be a clean and comfy retreat after a long day out and about. The food is 'to die for' and the breakfast is extra special! If only they could guarantee the weather!

Three letters to sum up my stay - WOW. What a lovely place to visit for a break in the summer, we could have easily extended our stay had they had space to allow us to do so – instead we’ll be back for another visit!

The hotel was comfortable during our stay in June and we left the visit feeling recharged after many great walks – Rob the owner knows many walks and had an abundance of information about the area.
They offer tea, cakes and more for walkers passing by, or in our instance when we returned from a long walk. If the weather is good, which it was for us, sitting out on the lawn smelling the lovely clean air is something not to miss (the cakes also hit the spot!). The food is fantastic with a good all-rounded menu - I'd come here even if I wasn't staying at Lancrigg.

The location is spectacular and being able to walk from the hotel straight out onto the mountains is something I really look for. We stayed in the Silver Howe room which has a breathtaking view.

We have also been fortunate to experience Christmas at Lancrigg which is a very social affair with many opportunities to make friends with other guests, and with some of the best vegetarian feasts I've ever experienced. The hotel, although heavy with snow outside, was beautifully warm with a gorgeous fireplace in the lounge for us to sit around have a hot toddy or two!

The staff were really helpful and happy to attend to our needs. Our room was lovely and airy, and the hotel appeared to be cleaned to a generally high standard - it is quite an old building so it must take some effort to keep clean with all the nook and cranny’s around. In a nutshell, this place is well worth the visit.

We stayed one night as were passing through the area and were attracted by the Vegetarian status. Unfortunately we were very disappointed in the standard of the room and cancelled our dinner reservation on the strength of this. We did not expect contemporary chic, but the cheap mismatched furniture, ancient mattress and generally tired decor fell below the standard expected when paying these rates. On a more positive note, the breakfast was quite tasty, although service was erratic (we waited 40 minutes for our full English, and even though we were first in the dining room, others were served quicker than us) but the staff were friendly and polite. The toiletries provided are lovely, and locally made, the highlight of our stay!

If you want a great location, and fantastic views from the gardens (and some rooms) this hotel may suit you, but overall, it wasn't for us.

Take care on the bumpy dirt track up to the hotel as there are some large holes where we scraped the underside of the car and bumper!
