“Wonderful birthday stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2014

Potential guests should be aware that this is a private rural Country House hotel, not a Hyatt or Sheraton Hotel, if you are looking for a modern building with 'clean fresh lines' serving a homogenised generic menu then Lancrigg may not be for you.

We stayed in July, and in our opinion the hotel is beautiful, set in glorious countryside, with plenty of well marked footpaths directly from the hotel itself. (There is also the most amazing arboretum as part of the gardens.) We booked onto the ground floor room, which gave us the opportunity to have a door opening straight into the wonderful gardens. The room has a lovely four poster bed, and is decorated in a traditional country style, the huge free-standing bath is wonderful after enjoying the walks. Yes, there is no broadband, and the television is not a flatscreen, but who comes to the Lakes and scenery like this to sit in the room and watch the television or surf the internet?

The most impressive thing about Lancrigg though has to be the food. It is delicious. From the three course breakfast, through to the best vegan dinner I have ever had, and the staff were lovely and very attentive. They even made a vegan birthday cake specially for my partner.

I've stayed in some wonderful hotels around the world, but for very few of them would I make a special journey to return to, but I will be going back to Lancrigg .

We have just returned from grasemere following a 3 night stay. We had booked into the Lancrigg but unfortunately booked out after one hour! On the review of peoples reviews, in the first instance it looks very positive but on reviewing them again on our return, all people comment on is the food and setting of the hotel!! The setting is lovely, peaceful and stunning views. Unfortunately we cant comment on the food as we didnt stay long enough to try it! We arrived to be shown to our room, the Amythest room. I was so disappointed. It was cold, shabby looking, needs a total revamp! I tryed to stay positive but unfortunately when we turned the very old and tired TV on we could only get Sky news! I appreciate you dont go away for TV programmes but it is the most basic thing in a hotel and it should be our choice if we watch it or not. We informed reception of the all problems to be told they could get the TV looked at tomorrow! And that the person before us had not complained!! She didnt even go to look at it!
I was very grateful though that they allowed us to book out at no cost.

As a vegan I get very frustrated by vegetarian establishments which do not or cannot cater for vegans. I don't want to chose a veggie dish and have it without the cheese or eggs. At Lancrigg most of the menu is vegan, which is fantastic. On a recent trip I enjoyed a different vegan breakfast on each of day of our long weekend (and not the usual healthy options of fruit and cereal - but proper vegan fry ups) my partner and I had different dishes each evening too. The dishes were inventive and well cooked, it made our stay very enjoyable.

And of course the location is fab. Recommended for vegans.

This was the perfect stop-off on the way from Inverness to Portsmouth; the staff are amazingly helpful and the food delicious. I really appreciated the level of service and the comfort of the bedroom. And the setting is superb!

I know something of the history and earlier residents of the house and like the fact that the hotel has not become over-glossy, retaining something of the feeling of a Victorian family home. Having chosen it mostly for that reason - and the location - I shall definitely be recommending it to vegetarian friends, and coming back to stay there for its own sake (despite being a definite carnivore myself!).

Room Tip: There is no lift, so anyone with limited mobility should ask for one of the two (?) ground floor roo...

This hotel is grossly overrated. While the situation is beautiful, and the house is intrinsically so, the hotel definitely puts forth pretensions it cannot possibly sustain. Where to begin? The level of the rooms, in terms of maintenance, furnishings, etc. is nowhere near luxury- somewhat tired, somewhat tacky, and somewhat worn. The service is dreadful- young eastern Europeans, some of whom can barely speak English. We had to go downstairs and ask them to stop blaring their music in the dining room, since the noise was coming up through the floor and making it impossible for us to sleep- first time I've ever experienced the staff making such a nuisance of themselves (although, mercifully, they did turn their electronics down after we requested it). The owner would obviously rather be elsewhere, and seems to run the B & B (that's what it is, really) solely so he can afford to have the place.
We came here after staying at Linthwaite in Bowness, and the contrast with Lancrigg really exposed how threadbare the pretensions of the latter were. This is the type of place I'd imagine a young, budget-conscious, newly married couple might enjoy, whilst overlooking the shabbiness. In short, if you are looking for a luxury stay in an English country house, this place will disappoint you greatly; keep looking.

Room Tip: Silver Howe is definitely the best room/

Very friendly, helpful staff. Breakfasts were lovely, diverse & plentiful. House & grounds are in a beautiful location. The hotel interior & room decor are in keeping with the period era of the building, which we found rather nice. Our room was quite small, but we did go for the last minute budget option, and it was very clean, with lovely organic toiletries. Would have been nice to have more than a couple of stations on the telly, but hey, it was a beautiful, remote location & we didn't spend much time in our room. Highly recommended, very pleasant stay thanks.

We were staying elsewhere but were looking for somewhere to eat dinner, one veggie and one not so veggie! So s non-residents we walked up from Grasmere to be blown away with what can only be described as a banquet. The food is what we came for but would have no hesitation is]n booking here as a result of our experience. Unpretentious in manner we were teased with every course and quite simply ended as one of the best meals ive had in my 30 year veggie life. Great surroundings great staff well done you are true veggie ambassadors.
