We stayed at the Daffodil hotel for 2 nights on Sat 22nd & Sun 23rd Sept. We only booked it a few days before as a last minute trip. We booked a superior valley view room. We were very impressed with the room - Large and spacious with a very large comfortable bed. The bathroom was also very nice with both a great, powerful shower and a bath. Good TV with the ability to plug in your computer or games console. There was also free Wifi through-out the hotel. The spa was very relaxing and great that children were not allowed in it! Just beware of the slightly restricted opening hours. We ate in the resturant on the saturday night, where the slow service was the only disapointing part of our stay (it was very busy). The breakfasts were very good with no shortage of food. All the staff seemed very pleasant and helpful. Overall we would recommend the Daffodil as somewhere to staff that is a bit more luxurious and modern than most.

Room Tip: We were in a superior valley view room (208) - Good room. Would recommend staying on the second floor, as the bar & resturant are on the first floor

check in was quick with friendly and helpful staff. We had a view of the lake from our room which was luxurious with large bed and soft bedding, fluffy towels, complimentary coffees, teas, hot chocolates, biscuits (which are replenished daily and if you run out can ask at reception too) also in room upon arrival bottles of still and sparkling water. Decor is very tasteful and room was immaculate and clean.ironing board with iron and room safe were also provided in room. evening meals and breakfast were superb with attentive and helpful waiting on staff. We sampled the spa whilst there having a razul mud treatment, tried the thermal pool, sauna and steam room too. Overall experience at this hotel was 10 out of 10 no complaints with all staff being very helpful and friendly Hopefully we will return again and we will definately recommend to everyone we know.

Room Tip: you would need to ask for a lake view when booking but i believe all rooms are furnished to a high standard.

We arrived on the 27th September for 2 night break and were really looking forward to staying at the hotel. Reception advised that our room was not ready and Karen asked if we would not mind waiting, we were fine about this and would go and have lunch in the hotel. Another receptionist who appeared to be more senior ? said that room 119 was clean and we could have that. We walked into the room and straight back out again the room has the most ugly outlook of any room we have ever stayed in (air con vents and ugly building) As this was not our original room we advised Karen that we would wait for our original room to be cleaned. On returning after lunch Karen said that we had been given a better room 232 we accepted this room as it was fine with a view of the road (still better than ugly vents) We thought that we were now finally able to enjoy our stay. On returning to the room later that day the heating broke down and shower on/off control came off in my hand made it very difficult to turn shower on. We mentioned problems to Gabrielle on Reception on our way to restaurant. She said she would upgrade us to a lake view room, we ate our meal in hotel and packed and relocated to room 101. Room was very nice and big with view of lake, We enjoyed our stay but not as much as other hotels we have stayed in. On speaking to other guests (all were on either KGB deals, Groupon or Travelzoo) and seemed to have been given very acceptable rooms not overlooking ugly vents and a very ugly building. We feel that is was unacceptable to be told your original room was not ready and given room 119 (avoid this room when booking). Karen and Gabrielle helped to salvage what could have been a very poor experience and we would think twice before booking here again. There are other negatives - very poor lighting in rooms, bedside lighting inadequate, no useful area under mirror in bedroom for hairdrying and make-up etc. No area to change into walking boots and store on return to hotel (this would be handy considering this area is a haven for walkers or maybe the clientelle that the hotel would like to attract are poeple who's idea of a walk is a walk from the hotel into Grasmere !

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 118, 119, 120 all have direct view of aircon vents and ugly building and bins !

A new hotel finished to a very high standard. Excellent rooms with very comfy beds. The food was good but not excellent. Staff were very friendly and wiling but need more training. The spa is fantastic but the opening hours were limited mid week. When you take into account that it has been open only a short while we thought they had done a superb job and whenever we asked for anything we got it. The hotel is extremely keen to put right anything that is wrong. We would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: room 103 has double opening doors and looks out onto the lake

My wife and I were fortunate to pick up a 2 night stay at The Daffodil on a KGB deal. Not into walking but wanted to visit a part of the country we hadn't been before. As we drove up through the floods and approached Lake Grasmere, my wife pointed out a lovely building at the other end of the lake.....this happened to be our hotel. What a location. We had arrived at 12 and check in wasn't till 3, but our room was ready,we were told if we wanted to wait we could have a better room. Not a lake view, but looking at the fire escape plan on the door, room 223, was the largest of the non view rooms.
Pros:
Friendly staff
New modern bedroom
Super king and very comfortable bed
Fantastic spa area, didn't have any treatments but prices looked about average
Excellent breakfast
Had evening meal first night and food was lovely and well presented
Bar prices more like pub prices
A very modern bathroom room with seperate power shower and LED light, sense mirror
Art work in corridors, very clever and witty, especially those leading down to dining room. If you read history of hotel in file in room you'll understand why it is here.
Lake view from dining room and sitting room
Coffee filter in room
Large 40'' smart TV

Cons:
Dim lighting in room and bathroom
Although staff were friendly they weren't always attentive. 2nd morning my wife had to go and get the coffee jug her self after she could get the staff atetntion. But this will only improve as the staff get more experience
Spa closes at 6 mon to thur. Had to rush back from Bowness one day to use it.
Small wardrobe in room with rail going back to front not sideways! Although only there for 2 nights, my wife likes to pack for a week!
Because I had read it in previous reviews, staff slow at clearer tables, otherwise I doubt if I would have noticed and it didn't stop us having a lake view table both nornings at breakfast.
Atmosphere in hotel like a library, especially in sitting room, which is ironic as the wall is full of prints of original Ladybird and Penguin book covers.
Mentioned artwork in corridors but there is none in the rooms or reception for that matter.

Because of the atmosphere decided to eat out 2nd night and walked into Grasmere. Eat in a little italian which had a lovely vibe but staff not very friendly and food was pretty bland plus the bill was almost the same as at the Daffodil.
Alot of the reviews mentioned the lack of landscaping outside, you can see this is work in progress and speaking to receptionist hotel has plans to build jetties and have rowing boats and pedalos.
2 most do's whilst there are to take boat trip to Bowness as the commentary during the trip was very informative, especially on the return journey. Must visit Apple Pie Bakery in Ambleside, best vanilla slices ever!
The pros far out weigh the cons. Would love to return one day, especially to see how the outside has progressed. It won't be long before the Daffodil is the No1 hotel in the Lake District and a perfect venue for weddings.
