We have just returned from a 2 night stay via a KGB deal. The hotel was excellent i couldnt fault it, all the staff were friendly, it was all brand new inside and the thermal pool and sauna etc were great to chill out on an afternoon. We hope to return next year.

As regular visitors to The Lakes, we have watched the renovation of this hotel with interest, and we were very much looking forward to seeing and experiencing what had been done.

On arrival at 2.55pm our room was not ready. We only had to wait until 3.15, so no huge deal, but it doesn't start the experience off well, particularly after a long journey. And why does nobody simply use the word 'sorry' anymore. It does sometimes help.

The entrance of the hotel opens into a large reception / bar / sitting area. It is very modern, very stark and for me resembled an airport lounge or private hospital. Minimal amounts of modern furniture, no art work on the walls and lots and lots of painted plaster board walls.

This sets the theme for the hotel. It feels like somebody has spent a lot of money and put quite a lot of effort in, however it also feels like a new build apartment that has only been partly furnished and occupied. The contrast of this modern, minimal, unfinished interior was too stark for the traditional feel of Grasmere and the lake.

The bathrooms are very well appointed, however we found the lighting throughout the hotel, and particularly in the bedrooms to be very dim. The rooms have no lamps or softer lighting options and are sparsely furnished.

The Spa is impressive, but has not natural light or windows. Consequently you feel like you are under ground. The carpeted corridor to the Spa was quite simply dirty, and appeared not to have been vacuumed for days.

We only ate breakfast, which was the usual uninspired buffet selection. However it is served in a side room off the restaurant, which again, was just another plaster board box. Absolutely nothing else was in this room apart from the service counter, and the walls. No art work, no soft furnishings. It feels like a servery in a hospital.

As I'm sure you have gathered by now, we didn't like it. It feels corporate and too generic for us is out of place in such a traditional location.

My husband and I booked a kgb deal at the Daffodil and were pleasantly suprise, the hotel used to be a rather dated shabby place where cheap coach trips were taken to stay, our suprise and delight at finding a modern bright clearly well designed and thought out hotel was worth all the rain. The menu looked plain and simple but we ate there the first night anyway,it was cooked and presented well and was quite delicious.Good choice of drinks at the bar, friendly chatty staff and a great spa,we will be back.

We booked a travelzoo deal for two nights which included a meal on one night.

The first room we were allocated on the first floor had a view of a flat roof with a large extractor pipe pointing straight towards the bedroom window. Whilst I was aware that we would be allocated a room without a valley or lake view, I didn't anticipate that any rooms in the hotel would have such a poor outlook. Room itself was lovely though. Wouldn't want to pay full price and be allocated one of these rooms, and I would think there were quite a few with a similar outlook so I would suggest that you ask on booking.

Receptionist kindly moved us to another room and have no complaints at all about the second room allocated. Had a nice view across Grasmere up the valley. Room was very spacious, bed was extremely comfortable and fabulous bathroom with lovely Molton Brown toiletries. Enough wardrobe space provided for a short break and safe/ironing board/hairdryer provided together with Smart TV.

Breakfast was lovely with good quality bacon and sausage and good choice. It was self serve and all items were being constantly replenished when we stayed and all items on the cooked breakfast were hot. Evening meal on the first night was included in the deal, and whilst there is not a huge choice of dishes on the menu, everything was cooked and presented very well. We enjoyed it so much we decided to eat in the hotel on the second night also rather than go into Grasmere. Wine was very reasonably priced for a hotel (cheaper than the local pub!).

The thermal pool was fantastic and they must have just extended the opening times whilst we were there. We were told that the spa area was open 10 - 6 but when we went on our last morning there was a sign on the door with opening times of 8 - 8, which is much better for people who are out walking and would be able to access the spa on their return to the hotel. Agree with a previous reviewer that the hotel needs to provide facilities for drying swimsuits and/or providing bags to carry wet items back to your room from the spa area. Also need a basket to deposit wet towels rather than having to hand them to a member of staff.

Reception area and adjacent bar do look quite sparse at the moment and a rethink on the layout could improve initial impressions. Perhaps separating the areas in some way would may it look better? Can't help but think they have missed a trick not having a proper walkers bar where people would feel comfortable entering in their wet/muddy gear, but perhaps that isn't the market that they intended to aim for? Tweedies bar in the village was certainly raking in the business the two nights we called there for a drink at the end of our walk

All staff were very friendly and efficient and I would return to the hotel in future. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and once all the work on the hotel and the landscaping has been completed it will be even better.

Room Tip: Ask about the view when booking

My wife and have just returned home from a 2 night B&B deal through KGB at the Daffodil Hotel, Grasmere. The hotel has only been open 3 months and everything is clean, fresh and modern, and sits on the shore of Lake Grasmere. Our room did not have a lake view, but didn't matter as the mountain backdrop was stunning. Bed extremely comfortable with huge well appointed bathroom with power shower. Had one evening meal..excellent..and the breakfasts hot and plentiful. If we could obtain a similar deal we would definitely go back without hesitation. Used spa pool (note not a swimming pool), sauna and steam room. Take your swimwear. Staff very pleasant.

Room Tip: Possibly ask for an upgrade to a room with super king size bed, we did, but I would imagine all room...

Spent a day here on a spa package in October 2012.
Taking into account that the spa has recently opened I was pleasantly surprised on the high quality of facilities offered, however I must say that there are a few things that need to be addressed before they try and cater for greater numbers.

1. No hand drying facilities in the ladies toilets - when pointed out to a member of staff they said that maintenance had not fitted them as yet and as they had recently opened they were getting around to it...... fair point but the provision of some paper towels in the meantime would be a good option!
2. Spa pool is gorgeous, however small and I feel that if there were a number of people in would feel crowded. In addition there are only 5 loungers by the pool - we were told that the relaxation room also has seats (but not many and is located away from the pool area). If you were on a spa day and there were a few people in this would prove a problem as there is nowhere else to relax with a magazine/book.

3. You have to get dressed for lunch - I've been on a few spa days and it's always nicer to be able to stay in your robes. Kind of 'spoils' the relaxation in some way as you have to plan not getting wet before lunch!

Overall I would say that this place has potential but there are a few niggles over space mainly. I had a massage which was lovely but would hesitate recommending it to groups as I really don't feel that they can cater for spa day group bookings.

On arrivng at the Daffodil Hotel, the old run down buildings to the left are very unsightly and need to be demolished.
On checking in, the receptionist was unfriendly and miserable, we got left to find the room ourselves with directions to the lift only. After wandering around the first floor we finally came across our room, which was described as a "junior suite". As this booking was a present and quite expensive - £230.00 for 1 night, on special offer from £280.00, we had big expectations. The room was large, bland and very cold. We then noticed the large window was full of blue bottles and flies, with dead flies and blue bottles in the window cill. We called the reception and they said they would send someone to clean it. We opened the window to try and get them out to no avail. Why wasn't the room inspected before we checked in?
I requested a gown to try and warm up, but was told they were all for the Spar. It was the last straw when we found more dead flies in the carpet. We just wanted to leave!
There was no atmosphere in the dining room or the sitting room, all big and bland, and the bar was closed.
We couldn't wait to get out of the place and re-book somewhere in the land of the living!!
