“Fabulous views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2013

Bit steep on the way up but worth it for fabulous views of Windermere, Grasmere and Coniston at the top. The tarn looks like an infinity pool. Lovely walk taking 3 hours.

“Peaceful tarn close to Grasmere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

This is a good example of why people who say "the Lake District is too busy" are wrong. You only have to climb the hill on the opposite side of the main road from Grasmere to really get away from it all. Its peaceful and in a wonderful setting.

“A challenging hike-worth the views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2013

We spent the morning on the the trail to Alcorn Tarn, hoping to gain a sense of the beauty of the Lake Country from the heights. Some steep going along a trail shared with local sheep, but the views from Alcorn Tarn were magical! We suggest starting the trail at Dove Cottage and wearing good hiking shoes!

“Worth the climb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

A short but fairly stiff climb; fantastic views on the way up. Unfortunately mist covered the tarn but will go up on our next visit.

“I wonder if it's really a reservoir - still a great place though.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2013

A tarn is normally a small lake cupped by sloping ground all around. Alcock Tarn is built up artificially at one end to deepen the water for fishing perhaps or maybe to draw some off by a hidden pipe. One way to get there is to follow the coffin route/footpath from Rydal Hall grounds to Grasmere but to branch off uphill when you see a wooden fingerpost just before the path runs downhill to Grasmere. Another way is to climb Nab Scar behind Rydal Mount and Rydal Hall on a steep footpath and instead of walking the whole Fairfield Horseshoe route, you nip off to the left/to the north and cut across a grassy slope to reach the tarn via a stile in a dry stone wall. After that it's all downhill to Grasmere. That might take two hours including time for a paddle in the cool, shallow water.
