“a steady climb with great views at the top.”
Review of Alcock Tarn

The walk up Alcock Tarn starts just outside Grasmere and is a great addition to the coffin route which links Grasmere to Ambleside (4 miles) as the start of the walk is on the coffin route.

The walk up to the tarn starts in woodland and is a gradual climb before opening out to a path which tracks through low growing ferns with views over Grasmere to your left as you climb. Just over half way up you pass through a gate and enter more open fell land . The final part of the walk is more rocky but still easily walkable. The tarn opens up to your left and you can enjoy the views.

For views to die for this walk is well worth the time and effort. Perfect for the beginner or the hardened walker. The views across Grasmere in all directions give the walker the perfect appreciation of the beauty of the Lakes.

Pretty little tarn with great views. Sited below the Fairfield horse shoe and a lovely spot for a picnic(on a good day!)
There are a couple of routes. Try the route that starts by going up the side of The Swan Hotel. It is a quieter route with beautiful views the higher you get. Descend at the other end of the tarn and come down via Dove Cottage.
It is worth the effort inspite of what AW has to say about it!

It's a fair hike up to Alcock Tarn but the views are spectacular when you reach the top. Boots recommended.

Nice short walk to get great views. We walked on a wet day and still enjoyed the views. Seats on walk for a rest if needed. Good views for a picnic at the top.
